Alaska (song)

2016 single by Maggie Rogers

“Alaska” is a song by American singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers. It was released on October 14, 2016 through Debay Sounds and Capitol Records as the lead single from their extended play (EP) Now That the Light Is Fading (2017). The song was written and produced by Rogers and Doug Schadt.[2] The song became popular after Rogers performed it for Pharrell Williams at a master class at her school.[3] His reaction to the song went viral and “Alaska” gained popularity.

background [edit]

In an interview with Alex Siber of Pigeons and Planes, Rogers said of the song, “In many ways, the music reflects that meditative quality I get from hiking and dancing. If you think about it, those are two completely opposite things about her from afar. With one you are alone in the middle of nature. The other is about loud music and groups of people. But my experiences with both over the past three years have made them a mental health thing, a grounding process. I feel the same about her. They are the oldest, most original release. When I hiked to Alaska that summer, I had created a natural pattern bank of birds and sounds. A good bit of the rhythm in the song started with me just tapping a rhythm on my jeans. This sample is the main rhythm. I raced around a room. I wanted dance music or pop music to feel as human as possible.”[4] She also spoke about the artwork for the single, saying, “The artwork is from my time in Alaska — that’s me n the red. It’s funny , the 24 hours before this photo was miserable. It had rained for days, it was super foggy. We had trouble navigating. We were in two different groups, separate from our friends. But that morning we all found each other and we cooked this big one Feast of pancakes, macaroni, and cheese. Then the sun came up. We were in this glacial pool, which basically had this pool, and we had never seen a body of water like this. Nothing that loud. My best friend got this photo of made to me when we were fetching water to cook the meal [laughs]. It seemed like the only appropriate way to portray the music.”[4]

Critical reception[ edit ]

Idolator’s Rachel Sonis called the song “endlessly infectious.”[5] Stereogum’s Chris DeVille called it “a mind-blowing thing to watch: throbbing acoustic guitar figures, a crisp minimal disco drum beat, eerie background noise, thundering bass and sparkling pianos, all topped by a Grimes-esque high-end vocal work. You’ll be hearing it for a long time.”[6] Scott Russell of Paste called it “hauntingly beautiful.”[7] Alex Siber of Pigeons and Planes said, “What sounds like a softly spoken soul begins to float freely as the recording progresses, describing and sampling in the backbone of the track. Every component of “Alaska” pulses with the same heartbeat, amplifying itself like an echo chamber in which to dance and sadness left at the door. What remains is a catchy tune, infectious as it is seriously, one that needed time , to crystallize.”[4]

music video[edit]

The music video, directed by Zia Anger, was released on October 18, 2016.[8]

A Q&A with Baltimore Magazine revealed that the music video was filmed at her parents’ home in Easton, Maryland.

Captioning the video, Rachel Sonis of Idolator said: “The clip shows the singer dancing in the woods during what appears to be dusk. The image then shifts to a boisterous evening dance party amidst the trees, while Rogers and a throng of dancers carry on effortlessly performing upbeat choreographies before disappearing into a dark field.”[5]
