Joc Russell Pederson (PEE-dər-sən; born April 21, 1992) is an American baseball fielder for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves.
Joc, the son of former MLB player Stu Pederson, was drafted by the Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2010 MLB draft from Palo Alto High School. Due to his Jewish heritage, he played for the Israel national baseball team at the 2013 World Baseball Classic. After the 2013 season, Baseball America named him the Dodgers’ top prospect. Born in Palo Alto, California, Pederson is the son of Shelly (née Cahn) and Stu Pederson.[1][2][3] Stu played in eight games for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1985 and spent 12 years in minor league baseball. Joc’s mother was a college athletic coach.[5] He is Jewish by birth[6][7] and, because he is Jewish, eligible to play for the Israel national baseball team, in which he has played.[4][8][a][10] Pederson’s Maternal Jewish Height – Great-great-grandfather and great-great-great-uncle immigrated to the United States in the 1840s and were founding members of the Temple Emanuel Synagogue in San Francisco.[11][12] His great-great-grandfather Leopold Cahn (born 1864; son of wool merchant Israel Cahn), great-grandmother Zelda Sugarman (born 1907), and great-great-grandmother Fannie Morris (born 1873) were born in San Francisco.[13][10][12] Pederson grew up a fan of the San Francisco Giants.[14]

In the 11th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, Pederson was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He had signed on to play at the University of Southern California, where his father played college baseball, but Joc chose to sign with the Dodgers instead. He received a $600,000 signing bonus to sign with the Dodgers. The bonus was the second highest awarded to a draft pick the Dodgers signed that year, and it was four times the amount normally given to players drafted after the fifth round. Pederson had wanted more money, but he decided to accept her offer because he realized, “My dream – my big dream – was to be a star in the big leagues.”[2][28][29][ 30]
In 2011, Pederson became the youngest player with the Pioneer League’s Ogden Raptors to have a .353 batting average / .429 OBP / .568 slugging percentage with 11 home runs and led the league with 64 runs batted (RBIs). 997 on-base plus slugging (OPS) percentage and nine outfield assists. He finished second with 24 stolen bases, second in base percentage, third with 54 carries and third with 36 walks while playing in 68 games. Pederson was promoted to the California League’s Class-A (Advanced) Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 2012 at the age of 20. For the Quakes, he batted .313/.396/.526 with 96 runs (4th in the league), 48 extra base hits, and 26 stolen bases. The Dodgers named Pederson their 2012 Minor League Player of the Year, and MILB.com named him a Dodgers Organization All Star. Baseball America ranked him as the player with the best batting zoning discipline in the Dodgers system. After the season, the Dodgers assigned him to the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League, where he was an AFL rising star in 2012. After the 2012 season, he was ranked the No. 4 overall for the Dodgers by Baseball America (and No. 3 by MILB.com).
In 2013, Pederson received a promotion to the Class AA Chattanooga Lookouts in the Southern League and started the season as the team’s youngest member and the second-youngest positional player in the league. Pederson was selected to play for the United States in the All-Star Futures Game and was also selected to play in the Southern League All-Star Game. He hit .278 while leading the league with a .497 slugging percentage. Pederson was also second with 22 home runs and 81 runs scored; Third with 31 stolen bases, a base percentage of 0.381 and an OPS of 0.878; and fifth in walks. He had 58 RBIs and 10 outfield assists in 123 games during the season and usually batted up front. Pederson received postseason All-Star honors, was a Topps Double-A All Star, and was a Baseball America Minor League All Star.[33][36][44][45] He then played winter ball for the Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League, where he had a .439 on-base percentage. After the 2013 season, Baseball America ranked him the No. 1 pick for the Dodgers.
In February 2014, Pederson was named Baseball America’s 34th Best Prospect in Baseball. The Dodgers invited him to spring training that year. Pederson was then assigned to Class AAA Albuquerque Isotopes to begin the 2014 season. He was named Minor League Prospect of the Month by MLBPipeline.com in April 2014 after hitting .398 (second best in league)/.504/.663 with 6 home runs and 9 steals. He was the fifth youngest positional player in the Pacific Coast League and almost five years younger than the league average. Baseball America’s Ben Badler opined, “Pederson is the No. 1 Dodgers, No. 34 in baseball, and I still think he’s underrated.”
Pederson was named to the midseason Pacific Coast League All-Star Team after scoring .319/.437 (leading PCL)/.568 (3rd) with 1.005 OPS (leading PCL) and 17 home runs (tie 6th ) in the minor leagues), 57 walks (first place in the PCL), 58 runs made (2nd in the PCL) and 20 stolen bases (3rd in the PCL) in 74 games. On August 23, in his 115th game of the season, Pederson became the first player in the PCL in 80 years (since Frank Demaree in 1934 in 186 games) and fourth all-time to hit 30 homers and 30 stole bases in the same season .[56] The only other Pacific Coast League hitters to do so were Lefty O’Doul (1927, in 189 games) and Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri (1925, in 197 games). He was also only the second minor league Dodger to do so, aligning with Chin-Feng Chen (1999; 31/31 for Class A San Bernardino).
Pederson finished his minor league season with a .303/.435 (league leader)/.582 (3rd in league). He led the PCL with 106 runs scored, 33 home runs, 100 walks and 1,017 OPS while stealing 30 bases (3rd in the league). Pederson set isotopic one-year records for walks and runs scored. He hit .306/.442/.573 against righties and .299/.422/.598 against lefties while hitting .366 with runners on base. After the season, he received the 2014 PCL Most Valuable Player Award, a postseason All-PCL Team selection, and the PCL Rookie of the Year Award. 2014: September call[ edit ]
With the major league roster expanding to 40 players for September, Pederson was added to the Dodgers’ 40-man roster and received his first major call-up on September 1, 2014. Manager Don Mattingly said: “The people in our organization who have watched him the most say he’s the best midfielder in our organization.”
That night against the Washington Nationals, with the Dodgers trailing 6-4 with two outs and two runners on base, Pederson scored a pinch hit for pitcher Yimi García. He brought Rafael Soriano to a full count but was called out on strikes to end the game. He started midfield the following day and scored his first major league hit on a single from Doug Fister in the second inning. In 18 games, he had four hits in 28 at-bats.

Baseball America named Pederson their 8th Prospect in 2015, and MLB.com ranked him their 13th Best Prospect in baseball for the 2015 season. Matt Kemp’s offseason trade created an opening in midfield and Pederson was named opening-day starting midfielder, beating veteran Andre Ethier for the position.
He hit his first MLB home run on April 12 against A.J. Schugel of the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 7-4 win. On May 1, he hit his first major league grand slam from Rubby De La Rosa of the Diamondbacks, a 446-foot dash. Pederson scored in both games of a day-night doubleheader on June 2; his second homer covered an estimated 480 feet. On June 3, he scored in his fifth straight game, becoming only the fifth Dodgers to do so.
Pederson was selected to the National League roster in the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, becoming the first Dodgers rookie to be selected as an All Star since Hideo Nomo in 1995. Against the Diamondbacks on June 14, he hit two solo homers against Archie Bradley in a 7-4 win. On June 28, Pederson walked out of a game against the Milwaukee Brewers after spraining his right AC joint while making a dive catch against the outfield wall. he was placed on the DL three days later but returned on July 19.[97][98] On July 29, he hit a two-run home run against Daniel Hudson and had four RBIs in a 9-7 win over the Diamondbacks. He hit solo home runs against Tom Koehler and Brian Ellington on September 10 in a 5-0 win over the Miami Marlins.
Pederson appeared in 137 games in 2016, hitting 246/.352/.495 with 25 home runs, 25 doubles and 68 RBIs. His 25 home runs averaged 412.1 feet (the seventh-longest average distance of any MLB batsman), and he saw 4.18 pitches-per-plate appearance (10th-highest in the NL). He became the first Dodger to hit 25 home runs in each of his first two seasons. His average exit speed on a batted ball of 92.3 miles per hour was in the top 5% of all major leagues.
For the second straight year, Pederson made the playoffs as the Dodgers clinched their fourth straight NL West title. Pederson started the 2017 season strong, hitting a Grand Slam home run against the San Diego Padres on Opening Day (April 3). It was the first opening-day grand slam by a Dodger batsman since Eric Karros scored against Montreal on April 3, 2000. His five opening-day RBIs were the most by a Dodger since Raúl Mondesí had six against the Diamondbacks in 1999. On May 23, in a 2–1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, Pederson collided with teammate Yasiel Puig in outfield and went on the 7-Day Disabled List with concussion. He did not return until June 13, when González was placed on the disabled list.[109] Pederson’s batting average fell from .248 on July 28 to .215 on August 18 after batting against .049 in 15 games. On August 19, Pederson was sent to Triple-A after the Dodgers acquired Curtis Granderson from the New York Mets. “That was [my] first time being demoted,” Pederson mused. “But the [PCL] showed me a lot, the things I needed to work on.”[93] Pederson felt he made helpful adjustments, but he only hit .182 after being recalled in September. [93] In 2017, he hit .212/.331/.407 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 273 at-bats.[33] His batted exit velocity of 114.1 mph was in the top 5% of all major leagues.[89]
The Dodgers won the NL West for a fifth straight season, but Pederson was dropped from their roster to start the playoffs. He was listed for the 2017 NLCS due to an injury to All-Star shortstop Corey Seager. Pederson was used mostly off the bench in the series, though he did get one start in Game 3; the Dodgers won the series in five games. Seager returned for the 2017 World Series against the Houston Astros, and Granderson was dropped from the roster to make room for him, opening up playing time for other Dodger outfielders. After not playing in Game 1, Pederson started five of the next six World Series games. In the World Series, Pederson broke a Dodgers postseason record set in 1953 when he had five straight games of extra base hits and beat Billy Cox, Andre Ethier and A.J. Chicago Cubs (2021) [ edit ]
On February 5, 2021, Pederson signed a one-year, $7 million guaranteed contract with the Chicago Cubs that included a reciprocal option for the 2022 season. He was motivated to sign with the Cubs because he hoped to get more playing time than he got from the Dodgers. With his usual number 31 retired by the Cubs for both Greg Maddux and Fergie Jenkins, Pederson chose the new number 24 for his tenure with the team as he began the season, starting daily in left field. On July 15, 2021, Pederson was traded to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for minor league prospect Bryce Ball. Pederson’s mother is Jewish and due to his Jewish heritage he played in the qualifying rounds of the 2013 World Baseball Classic as the youngest player on the team for the Israel national baseball team. Personal life[edit]
Pederson married longtime girlfriend Kelsey Williams in January 2018.[182] They live in Studio City, California.[183] In October 2018, during the National League Championship Series between the Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers, their daughter was born.[184] The couple’s son was born a month before the Dodgers won the 2020 World Series over the Tampa Bay Rays.
