The Black Mafia Family (BMF) was a drug trafficking and money laundering organization in the United States.
The Black Mafia Family was formed in southwest Detroit in 1985 by brothers Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory and by 2000 had established connections through their Los Angeles-based drug source and direct cocaine distribution in the United States on Mexican drug cartels.[2][3] The Black Mafia Family operated from two main centers: one in Atlanta for distribution, run by Demetrius Flenory, and one in Los Angeles to handle inbound shipments from Mexico, run by Terry Flenory.[4]
The Black Mafia Family under Demetrius Flenory entered the hip-hop music business in the early 2000s as BMF Entertainment, as a front organization to launder money from cocaine sales and legitimize themselves. BMF Entertainment has acted as a promoter for several high profile hip hop artists and as a record label for their sole artist, Bleu DaVinci. Demetrius Flenory and the Black Mafia Family rose to fame in hip-hop popular culture for their extremely extravagant lifestyles.
In 2005, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) indicted members of the Black Mafia Family and eventually secured convictions by targeting the Flenory brothers under the Continuing Criminal Enterprise Statute, and both were sentenced to 30 years in prison. Prosecutors claimed the Black Mafia Family made over $270 million over the course of its operations.[5]
The Flenorys[ edit ]
Demetrius Edward “Big Meech” Flenory (born June 21, 1968 in Detroit, Michigan) and his brother Terry P.O. Lee “Southwest T” Flenory (born January 10, 1970 in Detroit, Michigan) began selling $50 bags of cocaine on the streets of Detroit in the late 1980s during her high school years. By 2000, the Flenory brothers had formed a large organization that oversaw the sale of kilograms worth of cocaine in numerous US states including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee. 9] A two-year federal survey of the Flenory organization estimated its nationwide membership at over 500.
Around 2003, the organization experienced a schism when the Flenory brothers began falling out, with Terry Flenory moving to Los Angeles to run his own organization while Demetrius Flenory stayed at the main distribution center in Atlanta. By 2003, the two were involved in a major argument and rarely spoke to each other.[9] In a conversation with his brothers, intercepted by the DEA, Terry opened up about his concerns that his brother Demetrius’ excessive partying was drawing the wrong kind of attention to their business. At the time charges were brought against the Flenorys, the government had 900 pages of typed transcripts of tapped conversations from Terry’s phone over a 5 month period.[9]
In November 2007, the brothers pleaded guilty to running a continuing criminal enterprise.[10] In September 2008, both brothers were sentenced to 30 years in prison for running a nationwide cocaine trafficking ring that existed from 2000 to 2005.[11] Demetrius Flenory is serving his sentence at Federal Correctional Institution, Sheridan, and is scheduled for release on May 5, 2029, around his 64th birthday.[6] Terry Flenory was released to house arrest on May 5, 2020 after being granted a compassionate release due to health concerns and efforts by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to release certain inmates to limit the federal spread of the COVID-19 pandemic was prisons. Demetrius Flenory also sought his release under the same guidelines; However, a federal judge rejected the move, claiming it would be premature to authorize his release as his arrest record indicates he has not changed and continues to apply as a drug lord, further stating that his disciplinary record lists violations such as possession of a cell includes telephone and guns and drug use.[12]
BMF entertainment [ edit ]
In the early 2000s, Demetrius Flenory founded BMF Entertainment as a hip hop music promotion agency and record label. The Flenory brothers were already known for collaborating with numerous high-profile hip-hop artists, including Diddy, Trina, T.I., Jay-Z, Young Jeezy and Fabolous. Demetrius founded BMF Entertainment as a front organization for laundering the money generated by the cocaine distribution network, but it was also an attempt to create a legitimate business and revenue stream. Around this time, the Flenory organization officially took the name “Black Mafia Family”, having previously been unnamed.
In 2005, Bleu Da Vinci’s album World Is BMF’s was nominated for a Source Award. BMF has appeared in numerous underground hip hop DVD magazines, most notably several issues of S.M.A.C.K. and The Come Up. The organization’s most visible appearance was a full-length DVD produced by The Raw Report, which gave an in-depth look at its movement. The DVD was featured in Vibe’s May 2006 cover story on BMF. She received critical acclaim from DJs for the Soundsmith Productions-produced song “Streets on Lock”, [13] conducted by BMF subsidiary Bleu Davinci and featuring Fabolous and Young Jeezy. A music video[14] was later produced for the single, although it was never released to networks.
Mara Shalhoup, executive editor of Creative Loafing, wrote a three-part series on the Black Mafia Family entitled Hip-Hop’s Shadowy Empire,[15] which was the first in-depth account of the organization. Shalhoup’s book about the organization, BMF: The Rise and Fall of Big Meech and the Black Mafia Family, was published in March 2010.

Police investigations into the Black Mafia began sometime in the early 1990s before the organization run by Demetrius and Terry Flenory was named or peaked. Preparations for the October 2005 indictment began with a series of large drug seizures followed by testimonies from BMF members. On October 28, 2003, a two-year investigation by the Organized Crime Task Force coordinated by the DEA’s Special Operations Division, codenamed “Operation Motor City Mafia”, began.
On April 11, 2004, BMF courier and senior distributor Jabari Hayes was pulled over in Phelps County, Missouri along I-44 in a 40-foot motor home, allegedly for crossing the fog line. Two suitcases containing approximately 95 kilograms of cocaine and 572 grams of marijuana were found in the rear of the Range Rover after a K-9 unit alerted them to drugs in the vehicle.[9]
In mid-September 2004, a wiretapping of Rafael “Smurf” Allison, a low-level crack dealer in Atlanta, led a HIDTA task force to Decarlo Hoskins, a mid-level dealer. Hoskins informed them that he grew up with two brothers, Omari McCree and Jeffrey Leahr, who were BMF members and could regularly supply several kilograms of cocaine. Wiretaps revealed that Omari McCree was a high-level distributor for the Flenory organization and was favored by Demetrius.
On November 5, 2004, Jeffrey Leahr and his girlfriend were stopped on I-75 in Atlanta for wiretapping devices. A duffel bag containing 10 kilograms of cocaine was in the back seat. They were released later that day in an attempt by HIDTA to gather more information about their supplier and the organization using listening devices. McCree and Leahr, facing a large debt to BMF for the lost cocaine, went on the run. When picked up on June 8, 2005, Unknown signed a confidential sources agreement and described his role in BMF, citing Demetrius Flenory as the source of the cocaine. Chad “J-Bo” Brown provided him with cocaine on behalf of Demetrius. These events and a number of others formed the backbone of the government’s argument. At the trial, William “Doc” Marshall was the government’s key witness.[9]
Testimony given at various trials states that the Flenory organization operated as follows: BMF operated five hide houses in the Atlanta area. Roughly every 10 days, vehicles would arrive with 100-150 kilograms of cocaine packed in secret compartments. Workers in the secret houses were paid to unload and store the drugs.[16] Customers who ordered called and said they had their vehicle ready — that is, a transport vehicle into which to load the narcotics. Depending on the size of their order, they were directed to a designated hideout where they stopped, walked in, hand over money in $5,000 bundles. The cocaine typically sold for $20,000 per kilogram.[16] The same vehicles would then be filled with cash (proceeds from drug sales) to be shipped back to Mexican sources.[17] The workers in the secret houses had specific jobs, such as counting large amounts of cash, usually in the millions. Other people packaged the cocaine for customers. BMF also obtained drugs through large containers at the airport containing 100-150 kilograms of cocaine, which they collected and delivered to hideouts.[16]
2005 raids and arrests
In October 2005 it was reported that about 30 members of the BMF were arrested in a massive drug bust orchestrated by the DEA. During these raids, the DEA seized $3 million in cash and assets, 5 pounds of cocaine, and numerous weapons.[18] Prior to the October 2005 raids, the DEA had arrested 17 BMF members, seized 632 kilograms of cocaine, $5.3 million in cash and $5.7 million in assets. They alleged that BMF was responsible for moving over 5,000 pounds (2,500 kilograms) of cocaine per month across the United States.
Demetrius Flenory and Terry Flenory were convicted under the Continuing Criminal Enterprise statute of conspiracy to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, possession with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine, conspiracy to launder monetary instruments, and dual possession with intent accused of distributing more than 5 kg of cocaine. Demetrius was captured in a large house in a suburb outside of Dallas. Inside, police found a small amount of marijuana and some MDMA pills. A safe in the house contained several weapons, as well as several vehicles in the house. Terry was arrested in St. Louis with small amounts of marijuana and guns found throughout the home, which was also occupied by several people at the time of the arrest.
2006 indictments[ edit ]
On June 15, 2006, the US Treasury Department reported that 16 additional people were charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and money laundering on a second indictment, bringing the number of people charged in the case to 49. Defendants included Jacob Arabo, popularly known as Jacob the Jeweler, a well known prominent jeweler in the hip hop community. Arabo was charged with conspiring to launder more than $270 million in illegally obtained funds.[19]
The Justice Department also highlighted other alleged activities by the group in the indictment, including channeling drug money through various banks and money transfer services to disguise its origins. The group had also been accused of receiving several winning Michigan State lottery tickets from a third party, which they paid for in cash, and then redeeming the tickets to make the money appear legitimate. The indictment called for forfeiture of “more than 30 pieces of jewelry, 13 homes, 35 vehicles including Lincoln sedans, BMWs, Range Rovers, Aston-Martins and Bentleys, numerous bank accounts, over $1.2 million in confiscated currency and a monetary judgment.” $270 million total.”[20]
2007 indictments[ edit ]
On July 25, 2007, David Nahmias, the US Attorney for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, unveiled indictments against 16 other members of the Black Mafia Family.[21] The indictment charged all of the defendants with participation in the nationwide cocaine distribution conspiracy, which carries a penalty of 10 years to life imprisonment and a fine of up to $4 million. The charges were seen as “the closure of the BMF’s once-thriving drug empire.”
Atlanta BMF indictments[ edit ]

On July 26, 2007, the government unsealed the indictment charging 16 BMF members in Atlanta with conspiracy to distribute cocaine. All 16 defendants, including Kamron Coleman, were charged with participation in the entire cocaine distribution conspiracy. The conspiracy charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life imprisonment and a $4,000,000 fine. Eventually, all of the defendants pleaded guilty before trial, with the exception of Fleming “Ill” Daniels.
Fleming Daniels, a leading member of the Black Mafia Family drug ring, was sentenced on December 17, 2008 to 20 years in prison for drug trafficking. The federal judge also fined Daniels $10,000 for his participation in the violent group. Daniels was the 16th defendant to be indicted in Atlanta for his role in the organization and the only defendant in the Atlanta indictments to be tried, with 11 others already pleading guilty.[22] The government’s case relied on testimony from William “Doc” Marshall and Ralph Simms to convict Daniels. Daniels had not been caught with cocaine, nor had he been caught wiretapping talking about drug deals. Marshall’s testimony indicated that he had seen Daniels accepting kilograms of cocaine while he was picking up cocaine himself.[22] Daniels was also awaiting trial for the July 2004 murder of Rashannibal Drummond. On February 26, 2010, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for first degree manslaughter. His 20-year sentence is being served concurrently with an additional 20-year sentence stemming from his role in the BMF cocaine allegations.
Barima “Bleu DaVinci” McKnight, the rapper and sole artist for BMF Entertainment, was sentenced on October 30, 2008 to five years and four months in federal prison. McKnight claimed that Flenory presented himself as involved in the music industry and it was only much later that he got involved with the cocaine side of the business. McKnight stated at sentencing that when he first met Demetrius Flenory he didn’t show him “the other side of his world” regarding the cocaine trade. Released in 2011, McKnight returned to his music career. He and his younger brother Calico Jonez started the BMF tour. Calico Jonez, who founded Swishgang, joined McKnight to form a BMF Swishgang. Known to have had a part on Soulja Boy’s label SODMG, and gang affiliations with the Rolling 20s Crips of Long Beach, California, Jonez began making music under the BMF Entertainment umbrella. McKnight is also a cousin of Ras Kass.
2009 arrest
The last remaining suspect, Vernon Marcus Coleman, was arrested in Atlanta on July 17, 2009. He was charged in 2007 with possession with intent to distribute cocaine. By 2015, all 150 accused members of the BMF had been arrested. However, the total number of BMF members clearly exceeded the 150 mark. and transport companies.[23]
Allegations of violence[edit]
Before Operation Motor City Mafia and shortly after it began, there were numerous acts of violence accused of by BMF members:[16]
November 11, 2003: Demetrius Flenory was arrested in connection with the shooting of Anthony “Wolf” Jones, former bodyguard of P. Diddy, and Wolf’s friend Lamont “Riz” Girdy at Club Chaos in the Buckhead area. However, Flenory was shot in the buttocks and claimed he ran away from gunfire; he was never later charged. [16]
July 25, 2004: A man named Rashannibal “Prince” Drummond was killed at a club called the Velvet Room in Midtown Atlanta. The incident began after Flemming “Ill” Daniels nearly drove into Drummond in his Porsche Cayenne Turbo. After Drummond hit the car to warn the driver, the car’s passengers got out and began beating Drummond and his friends. During the fight, a friend of Drummond’s fired a warning shot to scare everyone away; Daniels reportedly retrieved his gun, returned fire, then walked over to Drummond and executed him on the ground. September 2004: Ulysses Hackett and his girlfriend Misty Carter were executed at their home on Highland Avenue in Atlanta. Police say the killings were ordered by Tremayne “Kiki” Graham, then son-in-law of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and suspected BMF associate. They claimed Ulysses had considered testifying against BMF and Graham, becoming suspicious, ordered her murder. [16]
May 10, 2005: Henry “Pookie Loc” Clark was killed by popular rapper Gucci Mane in an attempted robbery by Clark and four other men. The five men attacked Gucci Mane at the home of a stripper he had met earlier that day, but Gucci Mane was armed and managed to shoot the attackers and hit Clark. The incident happened during a feud between Gucci Mane and rapper Young Jeezy, a good friend of Demetrius Flenory. Gucci Mane was later acquitted of the murder charges on grounds of self-defense, and his lawyers claimed the five men were ordered by the BMF to commit the robbery. [16]
May 11, 2005: A fugitive named Deron Gatling was located by a regional drug task force in Chamblee, Georgia. Task Force agents found Gatling behind the insulation in the attic; At that moment, shots were fired at the police from outside the house. Jabari Hayes, an alleged member of the BMF who allegedly acted as a courier and distributor, wrote the book Miles in the Life (2009)[24] and is also executive producer of a 2017 documentary of the same name. In both, Hayes recounts his upbringing in public housing in Brooklyn with a crack-addicted mother and moving to St. Louis as a high school student to get away from his surroundings, eventually ending up in Atlanta where, after graduating from Morehouse College, he began operating a valet parking service, which eventually led to his alleged participation in the BMF.
In 2021, a drama television series called Black Mafia Family, produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, premiered on STARZ. The role of “Big Meech” is actually played by his son Demetrius Flenory Jr.; better known as “Lil Meech”.[25]

Notorious Queen Tonesa Welch Weighs In On BMF
Everyone’s been talking about Detroit’s infamous Black Mafia Family, the subject of the recent Starz runaway hit. In an interview with Tonesa Welch, aka “First Lady of BMF,” she reveals what it was like to go from a life of luxury to a five-year sentence for money laundering. Welch, now a motivational speaker and activist, is the founder of Sylent Heat, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help families affected by incarceration. She appears in the BET+ series American Gangster: Trap Queens, produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions.
INTERVIEW BY CYNTHIA HORNER
Q. How does it feel to know that women shine in these television programs and series? For years we’ve mostly heard street stories told from a man’s perspective.
A. It feels great because in every field, women always come second and are underplayed. Not to glorify street life, but it proves that women are just as smart and powerful as men.
Q. Is it painful to watch stories when you know the backstory well and many of your friends and associates have been imprisoned?
A.Yes, it is painful. Realizing how much my lifestyle was hurting and taking away from my family and friends was really eye opening. I wish some of our departed friends were here to witness the growth and how we have changed our lives for the better.
Q. This stage of your life is all about redemption. At what point did you begin the path to salvation and how difficult was that path?
A. I started my journey to salvation in prison one day when I was in prison for about two months. It’s funny because because of all the different jobs you could get in prison, I happened to get the only job in the chapel. One day I was talking to a minister in the chapel and I suddenly realized that I was responsible for my own actions. I jumped out of that conversation and walked the yard and vowed to change my trajectory, no longer wanting to blame the world and feel sorry for myself. I didn’t want to be that person anymore.
Q. How would you describe Tonesa and is there a difference between your public role and your private life?
A. People think I’m very outgoing and like to dance and have a good time, which is true, but at this stage in my life I’ve learned the importance of quiet times to focus and to focus on myself and my journey to remain faithful .
Q. What jewels would you like to convey to the younger generation?
A. Find your passion early and stick with it. Follow your dreams and don’t let the streets distract you. Listen to your parents, who walked the block a few times more than you did. Prison is tough. It’s easy to get into trouble, but hard to get out of it. Believe in something good and pray. pray a lot It works out.
Q. When BMF was in its prime and you were the First Lady, what was that experience like?
A. It was wild and really crazy. Some days I sat back and was confused by what was happening. We could do whatever we wanted and people opened all kinds of doors for us. It was a high, but it was also terrifying.
Q. Your episode was narrated by Lil Kim. Can you talk about them briefly?
A. Although I don’t know her personally, I loved the narration that Lil Kim did in American Gangster: Trap Queens. I loved the whole episode so much. A. Smith & Co. Productions did an incredible job telling the breadth of my story in just one hour.
Q. You have served a five year sentence for money laundering. Can you share some experiences from your time behind bars?
A. When I was in prison, I didn’t form cliques and got along well with most inmates. I had a hard time with some of the staff because they pre-judged me before they met me. At the beginning of my sentence I was told that I would have a hard time because I was an attractive woman with my background. And I did. I was harassed and a manager told me I just had to deal with it. Thankfully, spending a lot of time in the chapel and getting close to God helped me along the way.
Q. Falling in love with Terry Flenory eventually landed you in prison. Many women fall in love and this can lead to unwise decisions. Can you share a life lesson for younger people who will be watching this series?
A. I don’t blame Terry for my being locked up. I started my path of destruction long before he did. A lot of us women have a misguided loyalty where we think we have to be incredibly loyal to a man, and that’s not true. I had misguided loyalty due to my low self esteem and it wasn’t reciprocated. I was on my own. We don’t need to be led by a man. We are strong and we are smart all by ourselves.

A video of a woman claiming rapper/actor Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr. smells “musty” has gone viral, providing 50 Cent jokes for the Black Mafia Family star.
“I just want to say Lil Meech was very musty on Friday night,” said the woman, who posed for a photo with Meech, in the clip that has been circulating online. “He’d been in six places and he smelled like a pound of onions. I just want to know what made him put on that long sleeve shirt and be so musty. … He was musty, hoes said he was musty all last week.”
Demetrius, 21, currently plays his father Big Meech in Black Mafia Family, executive produced by 50 Cent. After getting wind of the video, Fif decided to playfully troll Meech on IG.
“@llimeechbmf gets so fly hate starts,” Fif said. “She said you smell like a bag of onion’s LMAO Nah dat’s Creed Baby the Gold bottle. lol.”
Meech doesn’t seem too concerned about the woman’s claims, but he still accuses her of lying.
“She’s lying right through her teeth faking a picture,” he wrote alongside several laughing emojis.
Aside from his role in BMF, Meech recently joined the recurring cast for Euphoria season 2 alongside Dominic Fike.
