Vir:

I was a problem child from the start. Academics were a big hassle. Due to my extracurricular activities, which included acting and basketball, I scraped my way through each level. I failed almost every subject except English, my favorite subject. Eventually, my parents stepped on the gas and said that if I didn’t study, there would be no extracurricular activities.

I was a naughty child and very talkative. My mother knew I needed to be handled very strategically. She started talking to me a lot to raise me, while my father made me read newspapers, a habit that has stuck with me. Today I read nine newspapers every morning.

In any case, there was always a line with my mother that I couldn’t cross. If I asked her questions in a row, I had to leave her alone for at least half an hour. But she never hit me. She got someone else to spank – boarding school.

I was very attached to my family, which consisted of my mother, father and older sister. When I went to boarding school at the age of nine, I had problems adjusting to life there. I’m a comedian I guess because I’m a rebel. And it all started in boarding school, where there are always strict rules. I constantly rebelled against them.

The discipline I went through early in life I think was essential. Because I didn’t go through a rebellion, I experienced a revolution. I wasn’t very keen on confiding in my mother except an hour before I knew I was going to get caught.

I only had a weekend curfew to be back home by midnight. However, it was relaxed when I was in college. The smartest way my parents disciplined me was when I finished college at 21. They had been supporting me all along, but then they told me I was on my own. From there, I did odd jobs, including waiters, construction workers, dog walkers, and door-to-door cutlery salesmen, to support myself until I made it big in the comedy scene.

Nowadays I meet my mother when I go to Delhi for shows. I turn down a five star stay to stay at home. I chat with her about work, the celebrities I meet, and the women I date. In fact, to her credit, she’s sat with the weirdest girls. The thing about mom is that she’s pretty laid back and non-possessive. So the girl I’m marrying won’t have any problems on that front.

Madhur:

Living in Africa, we were very focused on teaching our children Indian values. When Vir was nine years old we sent him to boarding school – Lawrence School, Sanawar in Kasauli. But he made life difficult for us and always planned to run away. Today he says that going to the boarding school was very good for him, but he didn’t feel that way at the time.

Something about him is very focused. For example, he wanted to study at a college in Delhi. He was good at English, but he wasn’t sure how he would do on the exams. So he decided to try the sports quota. He played basketball with great enthusiasm and even made it to the national level. Soon after, he entered Venkateswara College.

At that time we spent a lot of time together as I had moved to Delhi with my husband. I’m always asked a question that comes up because of my son’s job and that is, “Is Vir Das at home a fun person?” I have to say that he likes to separate his professional life from his personal life. At home he is actually quite calm and serious. If you ask him at a party if he should be funny, you will probably get a dirty look.

Halfway through college, Vir wanted to go abroad to study. We told him we couldn’t send him, so he got a scholarship and went to Knox University near Chicago. But one day he called and said he was going to study economics and drama.

Shortly after graduating, he joined a bank in Chicago. But he later dropped finances and went to the theater full-time. We always dreamed of our son becoming an investment banker and of course we were disappointed. But Vir got a full scholarship to a master’s degree in theater in Alabama. He also got his start on the comedy circuit in the United States.

About this time he returned to Delhi for five months. I remember his first show – Not For Members Only. My husband and I retreated into our seats in embarrassment at Vir’s sense of humor being so insistent.

But then we looked around and saw the audience giving our son a standing ovation. It was a proud moment. At first we were a little shocked and didn’t feel comfortable in his job. However, over time I’ve started to feel different – I’m proud of him now.
