American tennis star Sam Querrey has revealed how he and his family snuck into the UK after testing positive for Covid-19.
Querrey, his wife Abby Dixon and their son Ford fled Russia for London on a private jet late last year after flouting isolation rules at their hotel.
The 33-year-old said he was concerned about the prospect of being separated from his seven-month-old son if he was taken to hospital, prompting him and his family to leave their hotel complex early in the morning without the knowledge of staff ATP Tour officials.
“I had to make a decision between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. the next day,” Querrey told Sports Illustrated.

“I had my wife there and I had my baby there, and as a human choice I was like, ‘Hey, I’m not comfortable with this.’ So we made the decision to charter a plane and go.
“I contacted a jet broker and said, ‘Can I get a plane from St. Petersburg to London in about nine hours?’ and he came through and got one for me.We left the hotel early in the morning so we wouldn’t be seen and went straight to the private jet terminal in St Petersburg and flew to London.
The privately chartered flight is believed to have cost the former world No. 11 $40,000.
“It was a very, very expensive flight,” Querrey said.
Querrey and his family arrived in London on October 13 and his family was able to enter the country without being tested, checked or screened due to the UK’s approach to airports at the time.
Responding to the recent criticism, he said he wore a mask for the duration of the flight – apart from eating or drinking – and did not explore the British capital on arrival, instead going straight to their Airbnb rental property, where they met all 14 Years have been quarantined days.
“I felt like there was a human element as a father and a husband and I had to do what I thought was right. I wasn’t willing to let our family go to a hospital for at least two weeks that we were at,” he added.

A COVID-19 test before the start of the tournament gave a positive result. And so the veteran American was withdrawn from the ATP 500 event this week.
But after that it turned into an “Escape from Russia” story, the version of the tournament of which was clarified by officials of the St. Petersburg Open on Thursday.
Private jet early in the morning
The original story, revealed on Twitter by journalist Ben Rothenberg, had Querrey – who was traveling with his wife Abby and eight-month-old son Ford – worried authorities would hospitalize her and separate her from their child.

And so, according to Rothenberg’s information from an unidentified source, Querrey decided to charter a private jet. He found a country that would allow the family to enter despite three positive tests. And the family is now secluded in an AirBNB in the unknown country.
Pretty good caper story.
Tournament has a different version
The Creepy Russian Menace’s angle resonated well with many people. But the tournament’s version differs from the original story in this key angle.
(We’re not judging which version is more true; it’s likely that the true story lies somewhere in between).
According to a press release on the tournament’s website, Querrey and his wife tested negative on Oct. 7, the day they arrived.
But according to ATP protocols, they were tested again four days later on October 11 – the day of the men’s singles final at Roland Garros.
This time they were positive. A second test brought the same result. Due to the rules of the Russian authority that monitors public events and ATP protocols, Querrey has been withdrawn from the tournament.
He was ordered to isolate himself in his room at the fancy Four Seasons tournament hotel for 14 days.
St. Petersburg Open officials reported a rather different version of events than the one conveyed by sources to journalist Ben Rothenberg.
Rospotrebnadzor, the “Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare,” recommended that the tournament prepare a medical report on the status of Querrey and his family.
And so, according to the tournament’s press release, it organized a visit from a doctor and a pediatrician from a private clinic called Sogaz.
The doctors tried twice to hit the Querreys.
On October 12, they were told the baby was sleeping and they would not open the door. On October 13 (Tuesday) they did not reply, although they had arranged this in advance.
That’s because they were… out there.
Moving to an apartment from the hotel
At one point there was a “dialogue” between Querrey and the tour manager (in this tournament it was Pablo Juarez) – to no avail.
On the recommendation of the health authority and assuming the Querreys were asymptomatic, the tournament claims the plan was to move the family from the hotel to a “premium-class private apartment”. That would ease the hassle of quarantine time in a hotel room for three.
And of course it would ensure there was no possibility of spreading the infection in the hotel.
(The tournament press release makes no mention of what would be done if they were symptomatic – which is quite a major omission and is at the heart of this “he said they said” contradiction).
Querrey was scheduled for another test on Thursday. But the hotel’s security cameras recorded the family leaving the hotel at 5:45 a.m. without having officially checked out. The American informed the ATP tour manager that he had left Russia by private plane.
It should be noted that the tournament detail sheet specifically states that players must follow all local guidelines.
So what’s the real story?
Querrey’s version shared with Rothenberg is that they received an “unexpected call from someone from the Russian health authorities.” This person told them that “if they were found to have symptoms, they could be forced to go to the hospital.”
The version also says the Querreys experienced “what they considered to be mild symptoms.”

The tournament’s publication also states that it was the tournament itself that tried to “organize” the doctors’ visit, not Rospotrebnadzor.
The ATP is not pleased
Needless to say, the ATP are not pleased with what they describe as a “serious protocol strand regarding COVID-19”.
It sent a message to players that said, in part, that “players and their support team members are reminded that breaches of protocol could jeopardize the viability of an event and have repercussions for the rest of the tour.”
It examines the situation. And the message referred to the code of conduct, which has been amended to include potentially severe sanctions in the wake of the pandemic.
We have questions…
The number of positive tests has been relatively small (and almost non-existent on the WTA Tour side) since the ATP Tour resumed.
Notably, Fabio Fognini had a positive test in the second series this week at another ATP tournament in Sardinia. The problem was that he contested a two-hour double between the test and the results the next day.
Fognini’s partner Lorenzo Musetti stayed in the tournament. He won his second-round singles match on Thursday.
The laws in different countries affect how these cases are handled.
At the US Open, contacts of the positive Benoit Paire had to be quarantined at the tournament hotel for 14 days before being allowed to return to Europe.
In Paris the laws were different. The authorities could not force positive cases from their close contacts to isolate them locally. In fact, before qualifying began, several of them immediately left the country and flew home to self-quarantine.
Things are obviously stricter in Russia than in France.
So it remains to be seen what consequences Querrey will suffer from both Russian authorities – and the ATP Tour itself – as a result of his early morning escape.
Why are you bringing your baby?
The other question is: why would Querrey take his wife and young son on a tour of Europe?
Even before Roland Garros started, it was clear that the virus was increasing rapidly in different countries. As a matter of fact,
The drop in crowds at Roland Garros to 1,000 a day and the safety protocols in place were the first clue. Such was the fact that even if the tournament dictated that players should not be on the main page on days when they were not playing, this was practically inapplicable.
And Paris is not… Russia.
Expose other three positive cases
The other issue with this early morning escape is the number of people the Querreys may be exposed to.
Although Rothenberg’s source claimed that the Querreys “sat in the back of their chartered jet to keep as far away from the pilots as possible,” multiple people must have been involved in this little trip.
Apart from the pilots – were they aware of the risks and did they sign that? – additional service personnel may have been on board.
They should have been transported to the airport in St. Petersburg. They would have had to go through procedures at the airport. And they would have had to go through the immigration process at the unknown airport of arrival. They should have been transported to their AirBNB.
Also, was the owner of the AirBNB aware that his apartment is home to three positive COVID-19 cases? You would think that a full sanitization and disinfection of the property would be required as soon as they leave.
And then, when their quarantine period is over, they have to get home somehow. Will they charter another private jet – with the same number of contacts involved in this trip? Will they try to fly commercially?
Or is Querrey planning to continue the European tour at the other ATP Tour events?
It’s all – well, it’s all pretty irresponsible.
(Querrey and his wife’s Instagram accounts are “private” at the moment — although we don’t know if they were before all of this happened).
Long European tour for Querrey
Querrey’s original plan was to include further travel, from Russia to Cologne, Germany next week, then to Vienna, Austria, and then back to Paris for the Masters 1000 tournament there.
There are many airports, many planes. And there are plenty of potentially asymptomatic people around — even just for himself, let alone his wife and a young baby.
But when asked about it by New York Times journalist Karen Crouse in Paris, Querrey said he had no concerns.
Maybe he feels different now.
It has yet to be determined what the ATP’s sanctions might look like – or if they’re not enforceable at all. If they try to crack down on him, they could end up in court.
As of Thursday, Querrey is still registered for the Cologne tournament next week, the Vienna qualification in the following week and the Paris Masters.
