Mel Bernstein (born 1945), nicknamed “Dragon Man”, is the owner of Dragon Arms and a military museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Early life[edit]
Bernstein was born in Brooklyn, New York to a Jewish family. After dropping out of high school, he was drafted into the Vietnam-era army and worked on and fired quadruple-mounted anti-aircraft guns at Fort Bliss. After serving two years in the military and earning over 100 tattoos, Bernstein opened a motorcycle shop where he custom built a 1966 Harley Davidson, sculpting the wings and head of a dragon out of metal and fiberglass, and later modifying the dragon’s head to do so that eyes would light up and his snout would shoot fire; Bernstein claims it was the locals who saw him riding the custom Dragon Harley, earning him the nickname “Dragon Man”.[1][2][3]

Since 1982, after relocating to Colorado from Huntington, Long Island, NY, Bernstein has operated a motorcycle parts mail-order business, a gun shop, a rifle range, a paintball park and a military museum, which he calls “Dragon Land ” heard. [2][4] Bernstein, who describes himself as “America’s best-armed man,” features weapons and equipment from the Civil War to Afghanistan, including M1 Garands, .50 caliber machine guns, over 80 military vehicles and one working one 40-ton T54 Russian tanks, six 1000-pound bombs; medieval Japanese swords captured by US troops in World War II and over 900 mannequins in military uniforms.[1][5][6][7] Bernstein states that some of his military weapons are so large that he cannot fire them.[8] Bernstein is a Class III arms dealer and values his collection of military memorabilia at $10 million.[2][3]
Discovery Channel accident[edit]
On June 14, 2012, Bernstein’s wife and CEO Terry Flanell was killed in an accident while filming a promotional item for a new Discovery Channel reality show starring Bernstein and his crew called “Dragon Land”. Flannel was hit by two smoke bombs traveling at 150 miles per hour during a special effects smoke scene. Bernstein and a family member filed a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court against Discovery Channel parent Discovery Communications and Anthropic Productions Corp. a. The case was later dropped.[9][10]

Dragonman’s Military Museum
Backstory:
Mel Bernstein is a Vietnam War veteran who has a passion for the US military. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, he knew his dream would not be possible in New York. He knew he would need a lot of space, and New York didn’t. After a long, hard search, Mel decided on Colorado Springs. So in 1982, along with his wife Terry, they packed their bags and moved to Colorado Springs. What started as a bare piece of land with one building, no running water and no electricity soon grew into so much more. That one building would help lay the groundwork for what Mel and Terry would call Dragonland. The one small building soon grew into five shops and the museum that many people travel miles to see. With a building that is now 68,000 square meters and still growing. Mel has a room for every major country the US was at war with from 1914 to Afghanistan. Mel knew this dream wouldn’t be possible without his own money, his hard-earned money and his wife Terry.
World War room:
When you first step inside, you’ll see recognition plaques from Peterson Air Force Base Riva and Fort Carson. The museum begins with the First World War in 1914. The uniforms that Dragonman will passionately explain to you are over a hundred years old. He also tells you how the wars went by changing the uniforms after Afghanistan. He will also explain that just like in World War II and World War I, every district has dated 99% of everything. In Dragonman’s WWI video, he holds up a 1917 knife and a 1918 WWI canteen. Dragonman explains in his video that’s why it’s so collectible. He also has a case in which he draws a bolo knife, one of the oldest dating back to 1903. Around the corner is Lieutenant Jim Butler’s uniform along with his trunk. There’s a picture of him in uniform in the chest. Dragonman also shows his boots and explains that they are called hobnail boots. He has a statue of a fake horse and explains how his horse would have been set up in Europe. Dragonman explains the McCullen saddle and points to data from two different canteens. One from 1905 and one from 1917. Next to the horse statue he shows the Winchester Remington Eddystone 3006 rifle. He also shows General Patton’s last sword and explains that they made a few in 1918 but then stopped. The sword he has is a 1917 and it was called General Patton.
Dragonman also explains the trench warfare of World War I. The trenches were about two and a half miles long and a further 300 feet away was the German trench. They shot back and forth for five to six months. Mel then shows binoculars that the United States government made 15 inches higher than your eyeballs so soldiers can see over the trenches. In Mel’s video, he also shows the nurses’ uniforms. Long and white with a giant red plus sign on the front. Just like everything else, Dragonman shows that they are authentic uniforms. In the same video, Dragonman will also feature a truck made for the US Army. The truck has serial number 147 and he explains that they only made a thousand of them. Above the truck, Dragonman speaks of a flag with passion that is one hundred and twenty-two years old. This flag is just one of 4,000 in the entire museum. A police car nearby is a 1918 four-door Dodge. He explains that the United States government did not have enough vehicles to take officers to bases. So they went to Ford, Chevy, Dodge and bought regular cars. After that they drew numbers on it, painted it green or put a star on it. They then turned them into service cars. Dragonman also has a video where he does a bunker tour. Here he has just completed his WWII D-Day portrayal. With this display, Mel represents Omaha and Utah Bay. In the same video, he also shows you the Nazi Bunker, American WWII Bunker, Recoilless Gun Exhibition and Normandy Bunker.
Nazi room:
In Dragonman’s video he shows a small machine gun bunker with one of the fastest machine guns. Dragonman will also mention how powerful Hitler was along with the German military. How he lost half his men one winter because they were still in their summer uniforms. He shows helmets, uniforms and shows a uniform that Hitler would have worn. He will also show you some pictures of Hitler that he has on display. Of all the rooms at Dragonman’s, this is one of his most popular rooms.
Vietnam Era Rooms:
The Vietnam War was from 1959 to 1975. In the video, Dragonman sports a grille outfit and sniper water along with a scope. Also, in some instances in the video, Dragonman shows a helmet along with some items that he has on display. Dragonman will also explain why the average Vietnam veteran is now around 70, 71 years old. Mel a.k.a. Dragonman also features a picture of himself when he was 18 years old. Along with the 40mm shells in the m47 they used during the war. Dragonman also shows his letter that was sent to him when he was drafted. They would send you a letter if they drafted you into the war. Dragonman also features a picture of him on a 211 Deuce and a Half. Butterfly bombs, the papers captured by the government are also on display. The hot weapon of Vietnam the m60 and along with some smoke grenades.
Iraqi and Afghan spaces:
In the video, titled Boasting the Iraqi and Afghan Spaces, Dragon begins with; On January 17, 1991, the Desert Storm began and the uniforms were nicknamed the Chocolate Chip. MRE’S, which is still in after 27 years. He has bomb suits and an image of camel spiders 14″ to 16″ in diameter. He further explains that they bite but are not venomous. Dragonman also has a before and after picture of one of Saddam Hussein’s limousines. In the Afghanistan room, he shows hookah tobacco that they smoked in their hookahs. Along with some IEDs, CNET and a time bomb with a 9 volt battery. He also shows you how a child would have been dressed.
Bigger and bigger:
In a video that Dragonman posted on March 22, 2019, he shows off his new expansion. The new expansion features a fully functional Russian D-54 tank. Also, he has the half-ton m38 along with the Waffenträger 3081. Dragonman also has the gamma code. He explains that the m3 halftrack he has is something special. What makes it special is that it has German bullet holes going through the hood. On August 20, 2019, Dragonman set a record with its Sunday tours. 164 people came to the tour. Dragonman jokes that the FBI said it was a unique place. 34 years of hard work and dedication make this museum. It’s now 75,000 square feet and he intends to expand further next November. Mel has now spent around $6 million and has also received help from Fort Carson soldiers. They bring him things from Afghanistan. People from all over the world showed up. Dragonman explains that it was a record-breaking season. The museum is open in winter from March to November 11th.
