Freeway gang rape victim writes of crime that stunned Detroit in 1976
February 12, 1976 was one of Melissa McCormick’s worst nightmares as a survivor of sexual abuse at the hands of a gang of 12 men.
Like many Windsorites, a 19-year-old McCormick and her friends regularly visited the city of Detroit to enjoy the nightlife, but unlike other visits, a trip in the winter of 1976 saw McCormick through the most terrifying night of her life.
After McCormick left her friends to drive home, she got a flat tire on the Lodge Freeway while returning to Windsor. When she was offered help by a man on the freeway, she was robbed at gunpoint, kidnapped and raped repeatedly over a 12-hour period by a group of 12 men before being released.
“Me and (the man who stopped to help) were both held at gunpoint by a gang of men. They took him away, tied him up and put him in the back of the car,” said McCormick, 62.
“I had a guy on each side of me dragging me to one of their cars, I was constantly being beaten and threatened with my life, held for 12 hours, and then the gang leader actually let me go.”
McCormick immediately reported the incident to Detroit Police, who later helped her reach Windsor.
Her rape became the most high-profile sexual assault in Detroit history. In Windsor, she was criticized for dressing in flashy clothes on the night of her rape. She was convicted for being unmarried and moving out of her parents’ home at such a young age. People said she wanted trouble just by visiting Detroit.
“What got me through the lineups and the process and the horrible things people have said about me was that if I don’t come forward, this could happen to someone else,” McCormick said.
McCormick said she forgave her attackers a long time ago. In fact, she wishes them well.
She turned to countless therapy sessions and a library of self-help books. She studied religion and reconnected with her Catholic roots and she began living as normal a life as she knew.
After 28 years, she wrote a book about her experience called The Queen’s Daughter. The story of the woman kidnapped from the Lodge Freeway and raped for 12 hours still haunts generations of Metro Detroiters and Windsorites. It’s a simply told, painfully graphic account of an attack that worried then-Governor William Milliken that in 1976 he ordered state police to patrol Michigan’s freeways, which they still do.
McCormick said she began writing this book to help other victims of sexual assault overcome mental depression and sexual trauma and fight back.
“When the book The Queen’s Daughter came out, all these victims started calling me and asking me questions about how I was dealing with certain things about sexual assault.”
Her bold move didn’t stop at her book. She also founded a non-profit organization to help other survivors overcome such trauma through counseling and assistance.
“I’ve done this with my own dollars for many years. I live a minimal life and I couldn’t afford it anymore,” McCormick said.
Now she runs a dinner fundraiser at the Serbian center in Windsor every year, and this year was the fifth year.
“Right now it’s so crowded because of the MeToo movement because of women fighting their courage and strength to finally come forward and tell their story. I help them overcome their trauma and I’ve learned this not only through counseling but also through my personal experience,” McCormick said.
The fundraiser gives survivors a chance to open up and share their feelings and also overcome depression, McCormick said.
Maria Giorlando, Miss Canada 2018 and vice-president of Windsor’s Optimist Club, says it is optimism that makes a person move forward and celebrate victories, as McCormick did.
“Stay strong and share your stories, there is nothing stronger than standing up and having courage,” Giorlando said
McCormick said she helped more than 5,000 victims. She believes that what she shares with them is how and what paths she took to overcome the trauma

“She got me out of all the mental health issues I’ve been through and now I feel strong and empowered,” said Gail Hosking.
Now McCormick also owns a shop that sells artificial flowers and trees. She is a board member at a sexual assault crisis center and a twice-divorced mother of three.
McCormick said determination and willpower are the main goals to succeed and overcome any type of depression in life.

The prevalence of sexual assault in the United States is staggering. According to a study by the National Victim Center, one in four women and one in six men will experience sexual abuse in their lifetime. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, sexual assault is the least violent crime reported to law enforcement. Given that crime is grossly underestimated, the prevalence of sexual assault is also likely to be grossly underestimated.
In 2009, Wayne County Attorney Kym L. Worthy’s office discovered 11,341 sexual assault kits in a Detroit Police Department warehouse. The kits collected between 1984 and 2009 were never submitted for DNA testing. A sexual assault kit is the DNA taken from a victim’s body following a sexual assault. Each of the untested kits depicts a man, woman or child who has suffered a violent attack and has undergone a lengthy and physically invasive evidentiary process in order to apprehend his or her attacker. When tested, a sexual assault kit can identify an unknown attacker, confirm a victim’s version of events, discredit a suspect’s story, and link evidence to serial rapists. In contrast, an untested kit can often mean that justice has not been done to the victims.
Faced with 11,341 untested sexual assault kits, District Attorney Worthy applied for and received a grant from the National Institute of Justice, the Justice Department’s research arm. As part of the grant, a multidisciplinary advocacy group, along with Michigan State University sexual assault researchers, will meet regularly to determine how thousands of sexual assault kits have been stockpiled, what to do, and how to ensure the problem is not occurs again. Attorney Worthy is committed to ensuring that: every kit is tested; each case is investigated; and that a victim-centered approach to investigating sexual assault is implemented at the state and national levels.
