This 17 Year-Old Is Taking Over The Rap Game — Flaunt Magazine

Melvoni describes himself as “tall, diaper-haired, singing, funny, calm, collected, cool”, but always stays true to himself. Now he returns with the official music video for “Stackhouse” and recounts his rise from rags to riches. Flaunt caught up with the signer from Epic Records to talk about his upbringing in Brooklyn, his friendship with YSN Flow, creating No Man’s Land, shopping for his people, and more!

What was the household like growing up in Brooklyn?

It was like any other household in Brooklyn. A bedroom with 6 people. I grew up in a Jamaican household. It wasn’t that bad, I drove back and forth between Brooklyn and Queens because my grandma got a crib in Far Rockaway, Queens. I always went to school in Brooklyn, practically lived in Brooklyn.

Born to Jamaican parents, does that affect your music at all?

Definitely, my dad is strong in the music scene in Jamaica. I listen to all underground artists before they show up like it is in America. Jamaica is a different country so not everyone hears it out here. I’m more into that gangsta shit over there. Rygin King before he exploded I fucked hard with his shit. Growing up, I listened to a lot of Movado and Tommy Lee. My father’s brother was actually an artist, so music was no stranger to me.

You are so young, when did you start recording?

I’ve been writing music all my life. Rapping was fun, it was a way to get girls to school and give battles and shit in the canteen, ah ah ah. Sometimes I’m with my men, we got hit and freestyle to whatever. My friend Retro told me I need to go to the Stu. I used to really sing sing. Women used to love me, so I kept doing it. I would send voicemails, all kinds of shit.

Started rapping, going back and forth. I was looking for a studio for a whole year, nobody wanted to give it to me. I had a friend, his friend had a studio in his house. I begged him to take me with him every day, niggas wouldn’t take me with him. I ask everyone where they record, nobody wanted to tell me.

Up-and-coming rapper Melvoni is channeling his tough Brooklyn upbringing into music you’ll definitely want to hear

Over the past few decades, Brooklyn’s gritty environment has spawned several legendary rappers: Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z, Fabolous, and Pop Smoke, to name a few. But at a time when a number of artists have glamorized a lifestyle they never lived, authenticity is difficult to find.

Enter Melvoni. The aspiring 17-year-old Jamaican-American rapper from Flatbush slowly made a name for himself by using his rough childhood to create raw music. Growing up alongside his older brother, hip-hop star Lil Tjay, Melvoni said his family didn’t have much.

“It’s like any other Brooklyn experience,” he said of Making It, a co-production of In The Know and Complex’s Pigeon & Planes. “Fight but you don’t really know it’s the fight.”

The rapper said he was staying in a one-bedroom apartment with six other people, with his family washing their clothes in the bathroom. His mother would give him about $3 to split between himself and his sister. To make ends meet, Melvoni – aged just 12 – worked from 8am to 11pm in a supermarket. while he rushes on the side.

“[The] majority of people would view my origins as a negative place,” he admitted. “But I’ve always been surrounded by positivity.”

At age 15, Melvoni made his foray into music by releasing “Beautiful Girls,” a bass-heavy take on Sean Kingston’s single of the same name. After realizing his talent, his family subsequently supported and encouraged him to pursue a career in hip-hop.

“Before I recorded I used to tell my mom I was going to the studio and I was shit,” he recalls. “She didn’t believe me … But when I recorded it, I took it home and played it to her. At first she didn’t even think it was me.”

The next year, 2019, Melvoni released “Memories,” an unusual but catchy track that sees the artist rapping about his early life over an acoustic guitar. The song, which has garnered over 1.3 million views on YouTube, was praised by publications including Pitchfork, who claimed it was “only a matter of time” before the song “would be played by every Bluetooth speaker when the New York high schools would be fired. ”

The story goes on

In March, the Epic Records artist released WHO TF IS MELVONI, a five-track EP that has only widened his influence. Including “No Man’s Land”, the rapper’s most successful single to date. With over 5 million plays on Spotify, it touches on the challenges of growing up in Brooklyn while showcasing the rapper’s vocals.

Melvoni said he has no plans to slow down until he’s fully mainstream.

“Where would I be in 10 years?” he said. “I’m going to be in my big a** house with the same friends I dreamed up and a girl who really cares about me.”

In The Know has partnered with Pigeons & Planes to highlight rising hip-hop stars. “Making It” tells the stories of their travels and documents how self-made stars are gaining importance in the digital age.
