I began my acting career in comedic national commercials shortly after appearing in videos for Funny or Die, College Humor and UCB Comedy. I’m perhaps best known as Brittany, Eleanor’s roommate, on Mike Schur’s hit The Good Place, as Andie Tate in the return of HBO’s legendary The Comeback opposite Lisa Kudrow, and as Tovah Freedman in season 18 of “Grey’s”. Meet Meryl Hathaway Hollywood actress and Emory Health Coach
Meryl Hathaway has a notable acting record to her credit, from a recurring role on The Good Place to a continuing role on Grey’s Anatomy. When Covid came she saw an opportunity to expand her repertoire.
“With the pandemic, acting was completely gone. Nobody filmed anything. As many other people’s jobs went remotely, my job just evaporated,” she said. “It was a really scary time.”
Undaunted, Hathaway used the moment as an opportunity to grow. In May 2021, she completed Emory’s Health and Wellness Coaching Certificate Program, beginning a new professional chapter.
It was a smart move: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics sees a 17 percent increase in demand for health workers in the coming years.
Why health coaching? “I’m someone who tries to take good care of myself, and I’ve personally dealt with a number of different physical ailments, including multiple surgeries,” Hathaway said. “And I’ve always wanted to see what I could do to improve myself and have a bigger perspective on my own well-being.”
Then, in the midst of the pandemic, a friend brought her to the potential of a health coaching certificate. “She said to me: You have a passion for mental and physical health. Do you want more? There are ways to do that,” Hathaway recalled.
Emory Continuing Education’s certificate program goes deep, in-depth, preparing students to help others improve their health and well-being through a combination of live online and self-paced classes, as well as weekly coaching practice sessions and a supervised coaching internship.
The Emory course first gave her a necessary foundation in clinical matters. “For example, when it comes to diagnosing diabetes, you need to know a few basic things. You need to know what cholesterol is, what the different chronic diseases are, and how to prevent them,” she said.
In addition to the clinical information, the coursework helped Hathaway become familiar with the human dimension of health coaching. “Behind coaching is all the psychology, understanding the human psyche and why it’s so difficult for people to make changes in their behavior,” she said.
How does it work in practice? As Hathaway puts it, it’s not their job to change you. Rather, their role is to help you change yourself.
“People can change their own behavior. But to do that, it helps to have active and ongoing support from a coach,” she said. “Having active accountability from a coach, having that encouragement, is one way to help someone find that effectiveness within themselves — to know they can actually make those small, achievable successes along the way to a larger goal.” . That’s how it is done.”
The job fits Hathaway’s personality perfectly. “I love working with people personally and I have a really natural way of connecting,” she said. “As long as I’ve been an actress, I’ve had a sense of empathy, especially for people who are going through difficult things. I’ve personally had four major surgeries, so I’m very aware of how scary it can be to feel like you’re not in control of your body.”
She put this skill to good use immediately: after completing the certificate program, she was hired by Emory as a teaching assistant. “I enjoy being able to help students as they devote themselves to developing these skills. And I love just being able to give something back,” she said.
Hathaway has since gone even further, passing the exam to become a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach.
“The national board certification takes it to another level. It proves that I really do have a solid education in this field,” she said. “Anybody can go on social media and say, ‘I’m a life coach.’ That shows I’ve studied and I know the science behind all of this stuff.”
In addition to her acting, Hathaway now operates out of Los Angeles under the Lemon Grove Wellness company name. Thanks to virtual connections, she is able to offer health coaching to anyone, anywhere. She also hosts a podcast, The Lemon Grove Podcast, which she uses to explore topics such as wellness and personal growth. Hathaway’s podcast is linked from her website and streams on most podcast platforms.
She hopes to continue pursuing her two professional passions in the future.
As a coach, “I can convey that to my clients, friends and family. And I really hope to continue performing, both as an actress and as part of the podcasting entertainment community,” she said. long-term goal? “Sometime I would be really interested in becoming an instructor at Emory.
