David Mark Rubenstein (born August 11, 1949) is an American billionaire businessman. A former government official[2] and attorney, he is co-founder and co-chairman of private equity firm The Carlyle Group[3][4], a global private equity investment firm based in Washington, D.C. He is chairman of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, chairman of the National Gallery of Art, chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations and chairman of the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Duke University and past chairman of the Smithsonian Institution. In 2022 he became Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago.[5] According to Forbes, Rubenstein had a net worth of $4.3 billion as of October 2021.[6]
Early life and education[edit]
Rubenstein grew up as an only child in a Jewish family in Baltimore. His beginnings were humble. His father was employed by the United States Postal Service and his mother was a homemaker.[7][8]
He graduated from College Preparatory High School Baltimore City College, at the time an all-male school, and then Duke University, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude in 1970. He earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1973, where he was editor of the University of Chicago Law Review.

Early legal career[edit]
From 1973 to 1975 Rubenstein practiced law in New York with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. From 1975 to 1976 he was Chief Counsel of the Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments of the US Senate Judiciary Committee. Rubenstein also served as Assistant Domestic Policy Advisor to President Jimmy Carter and worked in private practice in Washington, D.C.[9]

In 1987, Rubenstein formed the Carlyle Group with William E. Conway Jr. and Daniel A. D’Aniello. The firm has grown into a global investment firm with $293 billion in assets under management[10] and more than 1,800 employees in 31 offices on six continents.[10]
According to A Pursuit of Wealth by Sicelo P. Nkambule, David Rubenstein expressed his fear that the private equity boom would end in January 2006: “This was a golden age for our industry, but nothing is golden forever”. A month later he said: “Right now we’re working like the music won’t stop playing and the music would stop. I worry about that more than any other issue.” According to Nkambule: “These concerns were proven correct when the buyout market collapsed in late 2007… When leveraged loan activity came to an abrupt halt, private equity firms were unable to secure funding for their transactions .”[11]
In May 2008 Rubenstein said: “But once that time is over, once the debt on the banks’ books is sold and new credit is issued, I think you will see the private equity industry go back to what I was call the platinum age – better than ever. I think that the private equity industry has a bright future and that private equity’s greatest time is probably ahead.”[12]
Rubenstein has said that he was once offered the opportunity to meet Mark Zuckerberg (and invest in Facebook) before dropping out of Harvard but decided against it, and this is his biggest investment regret.[13] Rubenstein also said that in the company’s very early years he turned down a 20 percent stake in Amazon. He told Amazon founder Jeff Bezos that if he was lucky and everything worked out, he would be worth at most $300 million.[14]
In 2018 he founded Declaration Capital, a family office focused on venture, growth, real estate and family businesses.[15][16]

Rubenstein has been publicly criticized for the work of the Carlyle Group, of which he chairs, which owns a number of RV parks and squeezes poor people out of their RVs by raising rental rates.[17] In an episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver pointed out that prefab homes are not easy or cheap to install, and as a result poor residents on a regular income face evictions and homelessness as rent increases threaten to price them out of their trailer parks.[18] ]

Rubenstein’s first book was published in October 2019.[19] The book, entitled The American Story: Interviews with Master Historians (Simon & Schuster), contains interviews with historians who discuss their historical specialties. Among others, Rubenstein interviews David McCullough about John Adams, Jon Meachem about Thomas Jefferson, Ron Chernow about Alexander Hamilton and Walter Isaacson about Benjamin Franklin.
His second book, How to Lead, was published by Simon & Schuster in September 2020. This book contains Rubenstein’s reflections on leadership as well as 30 interviews with leaders from business, government, the military, sports and culture.[20] In September 2021, Simon and Schuster released Rubenstein’s third book, The American Experiment, which describes how America’s government and democratic ideals have evolved over the centuries as told through the lives of Americans who have embodied the American Dream.

Rubenstein hosts two shows on Bloomberg Television: The David Rubenstein Show: Peer to Peer Conversations and Bloomberg Wealth with David Rubenstein. Peer to Peer, which aired in October 2016, is also airing on many PBS stations and is available on Curiosity Stream.[21]

Rubenstein lives in Bethesda, Maryland and was married to Alice Rubenstein (nee Alice Nicole Rogoff), founder of the Alaska House New York and the Alaska Native Arts Foundation, and former owner of Alaska Dispatch News. They met while both were working for the Carter Administration and were married on May 21, 1983.[23] They have three children, Alexandra, Gabrielle and Andrew. His daughter, Gabrielle, founded Manna Tree, a private equity firm investing in health and nutrition companies.[24] The couple divorced on December 8, 2017.[25]

Rubenstein was among the first 40 people to pledge to donate more than half of their wealth to philanthropic causes or charities as part of The Giving Pledge.[26]
In December 2007, Rubenstein purchased the last privately owned copy of the Magna Carta at Sotheby’s auction house in New York for $21.3 million.[27] He gave it to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. on loan.[28] In 2011, Rubenstein gave the National Archives $13.5 million for a new gallery and visitor center.[29] He has rare so-called stone copies of the Declaration of Independence,[30] the Emancipation Proclamation,[31] the 13th Amendment,[32] the Abel Buell Map,[33] the Bay Psalm Book[34] and the Constitution and has submitted these documents to the Loaned to State Department, National Archives, National Constitution Center, Smithsonian and Mount Vernon.
Rubenstein was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., effective May 2010. chosen. The Park Service plans to create 15,000 square feet of visitor space in the basement of the memorial.[51] This gift, presented in the National Park Service’s centenary year, was Rubenstein’s fourth gift to US national parks.[52] On December 2, 2016, Rubenstein, in partnership with the National Park Foundation, agreed to fund the upgrade of the elevator at the Washington Monument.[53] The memorial reopened on September 19, 2019.[54]

In 2012, he donated $15 million to support the university’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative[64] and $10 million to support Duke Athletics.[65] In 2013, Rubenstein donated $10 million to fund graduate fellowships and internships at the Sanford School of Public Policy.[66] In 2014, Rubenstein donated $1.9 million to Jewish Life at Duke to expand the program, fund building renovations, and improve the college experience for Jewish students.[67] In 2015, Rubenstein donated $25 million to build a new 71,000-square-foot arts center.[68] In 2017, he donated $20 million to provide scholarships for first-generation, low-income students.[69]
University of Chicago[edit]
Rubenstein was elected to the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago on May 31, 2007.[70]
