Deadliest Catch is one of the most successful and longest-running reality TV series not only because people are obsessed with crabbing. I would imagine that the eclectic cast of characters who are extremely passionate and good at what they do might also have something to do with it.
And while countless different fishermen have appeared on the program, it’s hard to forget the towering Mike Fourtner, now no longer a commercial fisherman.
The Unlikely Celebrity Mike Fourtner and the Deadliest Catch
In Alaska, where the majestic beauty of snow-capped mountains meets the sea, you’ll find practitioners of one of the world’s most dangerous professions. These adventurous souls work in daunting conditions that most humans would never face. Why do they do that? to catch crabs. Reality show Deadliest Catch chronicles the gruesome work of Alaska’s crab fishermen. One of the ships featured, the Time Bandit, commanded by brothers Andy and Jonathan Hillstrand, has Lewis County ties.
Former marine engineer Mike Fourtner calls Lewis County home. After living in Napavine for 10 years, he is currently building a home in Adna with his family.
Lewis County was a good starting point for the fisherman after attending Lower Columbia College. “It didn’t matter where I was,” he says. “I would be here for a week or two and then back to Alaska.”
Originally from Homer, Fourtner began fishing with his uncle every summer at the age of nine. After graduating from high school in 1998 (in a class of seven), Fourtner went summer fishing. This winter was his first crab season. From 1998 to 2013 he fished 10 months a year.
When he was home, Fourtner would volunteer as a firefighter for Napavine District 5. “Whenever I came home from fishing, I’d just jump in the fire department,” he says. “I loved it.”
The switch had to be adjusted a bit. In his first year – fully heated up and ready to go – Fourtner ripped the handle off a fire truck. His boss awarded him a plaque with the broken handle, which still hangs in his office today. “I’m a bigger person,” says Fourtner, laughing. “Admittedly, in the business of shrimp fishing on a steel boat, we beat that boat without mercy. I didn’t have to be so careful and could use a Bering Sea type power. I had to rethink my firefighting process.”
His size came into play on another call. In the event of a major fire, he and his team went into the building, but used up his oxygen tank faster. As he exited the building, the chief told him not to breathe so much. “I guess if you’re 1.90 meters tall you need more oxygen,” he says, laughing.
The time bandit fishermen are known for their humor and jokes. “It’s a special world,” says Fourtner. “I loved it. Jonathon and Andy are animals in their own right.”
Although the funny moments were endless, Fourtner recalls an accident that resulted in too much laughter at his expense. When sorting crabs in bad weather, the deck took a monster wave. Fourtner ended up with a cut above his eye.
After realizing it needed a butterfly bandage, Andy decided to shave that part of Fourtner’s eyebrow so it would stick better. The bald spot elicited a laugh from the crew. Andy stepped back and said, “You look so stupid.” Then he shaved off the rest of the brow. The crew thought that was hilarious. Then he decided to even it out and shaved off the other eyebrow.
The jokes continued for days afterward. Jonathon drew eyebrows on Fourtner’s face with a Sharpie and gave him various facial expressions. “That was in 2010,” recalls Fourtner. “Even now I have to trim my eyebrows every three weeks because otherwise I look like Albert Einstein. Thanks to Andy they are a zoo.”
Becoming a television star was a strange experience for Fourtner. “As the show developed, it was interesting for us to see how many people saw it,” he says. “We had no idea.”
Seeing random interjections from the show on film and television also surprised Fourtner. Tom Hanks even declared his love for the show during an interview with Oprah.
Fourtner was recognized by Dale Earnhardt Jr. while standing in front of his trailer at a race. “It’s weird that the people I saw on TV knew who I was,” says Fourtner. “We were convinced that no one would be watching. We thought we were fishermen, not actors. This is going to be a letdown. It was anything but accurate.”
In 2014, Fourtner left the boat to work for Cummins Sales and Service, selling marine engines on the West Coast and Alaska. “I never thought I would love something as much as being on the boat,” he says. “I work with the same people, just on a different side of the fence. I love it.”
Changing jobs means more time at home. “Now this location actually fits my territory perfectly,” he shares. “I am the center of attention.”
Although he works in Thurston County, he still appreciates Lewis County’s small-town feel. His life with five-year-old twin daughters is a lot of fun. “They climb walls and are very active in soccer and t-ball,” he says. “They like to get up and go, but with the attitude of 15-year-olds. In five or six years I will have sailors.”
When he’s not too busy traveling, Fourtner enjoys being involved in the community. He helped coach Adna High School girls’ basketball. “When the twins get older, I can imagine coaching their sports,” he says.
“I’m a fan of smaller, rural communities,” shares Fourtner. “You couldn’t pay me money to live in the city and fight for parking spaces. The best version of life for me is peeing off my back porch. Take me out to the country, I like it there. I really love being away from the city and Lewis County is perfect for that. It reminds me of remote Alaska. It reminds me of home. And when a place feels like home, that’s good.”
