Muffet McGraw is an American former collegiate basketball coach who served as the head women’s basketball coach at Notre Dame from 1987 to 2020, averaging a 905–272 (.769) record over 32 seasons. McGraw was born Ann “Muffet” McGraw on December 5, 1955 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, United States.
McGraw led her team to nine Final Fours (1997, 2001, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019), 7 appearances in championship games (2001, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019). as well as two national championships in 2001 and 2018.
McGraw graduated from Saint Joseph’s University and briefly played professionally for the California Dreams of the Women’s Professional Basketball League. McGraw coached at Archbishop Carroll HS from 1977 to 1979 and was an assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s from 1980 to 1982. From 1982 to 1987, McGraw was the head coach at Lehigh University, where one of her notable players was Cathy Engelbert.
McGraw became the head coach at Notre Dame in 1987. Between 1987 and 2020, he led the Irish to 24 NCAA tournament appearances, including a recent streak of 22 straight. In the current series, Notre Dame made all but one appearance to the 2nd round.
She amassed 50 wins over ranked opponents, including 40 in the last 8 seasons. McGraw’s teams appeared 139 times in the AP poll during McGraw’s tenure. Notre Dame has finished in the top three of the Big East in nine of the 11 seasons they have been in the league and has finished first in the Atlantic Coast Conference in all four seasons since entering the conference.
She received the US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Coach of the Year Award, Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year, and Naismith College Coach of the Year in 2001. McGraw was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. In 2016, the John R Wooden Awards Committee honored McGraw with the 2017 Legends of Coaching Award.
McGraw is the 27th coach in NCAA history to have won over 500 career games and is currently the 8th head coach in NCAA Division 1 basketball history to have 800 career wins.
On April 1, 2018, she earned her 800th career victory at Notre Dame by defeating the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the National Championship Game, McGraw’s second national title with the Fighting Irish. On December 30, 2018, McGraw scored her 900th career win against Lehigh, the team she began McGraw’s college coaching career with in 1982.
On April 22, 2020, McGraw announced that she was stepping down as head coach of Notre Dame.
