Mental Toughness How Natasha Ward Went From Star Athlete To Actress on Tyler Perry’s The OvaL — So She Slays
The prospect of pursuing acting never really came up until her current manager saw a photo of her. Four years later, lots of hard work and lots of auditions, Natasha now plays Ellie in Tyler Perry’s The Oval. A role she plays beautifully, but as you’ll discover, wasn’t that easy to come by.
Natasha sat down with us to talk about her journey through the entertainment industry, tips for fighting self-doubt and what she does to stay grounded.
YOU SAID THAT TRADING IS LESS PRESSURE THAN MODELING, HOW SO?
You know it’s funny, being a model has so much to do with your looks. You are the tool, the canvas, and as you become more successful, you will receive praise from campaigns, customers, based on your book skills and marketability. We subconsciously internalize that, “Well, the more perfect I become, the more successful I become, the more people will like me.” So it can build this very unhealthy subconscious, achievement-oriented psychology. As an athlete, it’s a competition based on my work and my ability. My intrinsic value was not tied to my performance. I’ve been on a team and I’ve challenged myself and I’ve grown, but in modeling, the industry is really built on selling people things based on their insecurities. You want to be me, that’s what it’s about. In this photo you must have this bag or product. If you had what I have you would look just as happy and healthy as I do, that’s Branding 101. To be the subject of this you’re not immune to it, you’re still absorbing the rhetoric. I myself have actually developed an eating disorder and many body image issues. When I became a model and the more successful I became, it got worse and worse because it was like, ‘Okay, now I’m on top, to stay on top I have to stay perfect.’ When I switched to acting, can you not only have to be pretty, you also have to be talented. I knew I was talented, I knew I could learn things. Acting was like I could have fun, act and be myself, be in the moment without that subconscious voice in my head saying don’t do this, don’t do that because you need to look or be a certain way . Acting really opened the door to that freedom of imperfection.
HOW DID YOUR SPORTING CAREER PREPARE YOU FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW?
I think the most important thing is mental strength. I was a jumper and sprinter, but as a jumper, you stand alone at the bottom of that runway while the sideline is packed with competitors watching how you’re going to perform and waiting to see if you’re going to beat them. It’s a level of focus and mental toughness that I don’t think is really hard to learn anywhere else in life. To feel the physical presence of what is intimidating you and to be able to really tune that out and focus on you and what you are doing and let that energy nourish you. As an athlete, you know there’s something inside you, you know, “I have more.” Whether you play sports, start a business, or just want to be more focused on your goals, you need to be that person in you that says to himself that there is more to me, more to my life, more to my story, I am capable of more. Not in a way that says, “I’m not enough,” but in a way that inspires you to go higher. In this industry, having that attitude and confidence is essential.
HOW DID YOU GET THE ROLE OF ELLIE?
I’m an audition actor like everyone else, 98% of the job is auditioning and 2% is booking it. The script came in during last year’s pilot season and I prepared for it, did my audition, went out and left it at that. I think I called my friend and said, “Yeah, I give it a 7 out of 10,” and then I didn’t think about it because that’s what we, as actors, have to do. You have to keep these things very loose. Then I got a call from my manager saying they wanted to fly me in for a chemistry reading with Ed Quinn, who was already cast as the show’s lead for Tyler Perry and the rest of the production. I was at the airport and my manager called me and told me that they were considering offering the role to someone else, but they still want me to come and that they would let me read for something else in the morning. So I thought: “great”. (laughs) I got new pages [script] the night before, and you know it was actually difficult because this particular character wasn’t one that I would necessarily say yes to if an original casting came up – Opportunity would have arisen. I didn’t resonate with her that much and it wasn’t exactly a story I wanted to tell. There were many aspects of her where I personally felt that the boundaries I set for myself as an actor were being pushed a bit. That was definitely a challenge, so as Ed and I prepared to read to Tyler, I said, “Hey, I’m actually going to do this a little differently. I want to play her a little more sophisticated, intelligent and accomplished than she is written.” He thought that was a great idea, we went in and did it for Tyler and I didn’t get the part.
