The Lithuanian girl turned down an intimate relationship with Nathan Leuthold, a Christian Baptist minister who met her when she was six years earlier.

She was posted to America when she was 18 before attending college. Reviews suggest that he used all of his financial savings to research Aina Dobilaite.

Despite this, Aina described her relationship with Nathan Leuthold as one in which he funded her awards, took her on a trip to Europe, dated her, and he or she never slept with him in a single day.

Police also determined that Nathan had attempted poison killing methods, but ended up shooting. He testified that he got ready in a closet for his wife to come home before he shot her in the head.

Alleged mistress of Nathan Leuthold takes witness stand

ANDY KRAVETZ of GateHouse Media Illinois

Nathan Leuthold’s alleged mistress Wednesday flatly denied the two were lovers, calling the man accused of killing his wife her “mentor” and employer instead.

The testimony of Aina Dobilaite, the 20-year-old Lithuanian, was highly anticipated as prosecutors believe Leuthold, 39, killed his wife Denise on February 14, 2013 because he was having an affair with Dobilaite. The second-floor courtroom was so crowded that many strained to catch a glimpse of Dobilaite, a slight, soft-spoken music student who wore her brown hair in a tight bun.

The Lithuanian denied having a romantic relationship with Nathan Leuthold, a former Baptist missionary who met her in her home country when she was 6 and brought her to the United States so she could go to school when she was 18.

Speaking sometimes through a translator and sometimes alone in English, she described her relationship with Nathan Leuthold as one in which he paid her expenses, took her on trips to Europe, filmed and trained with her, but that she didn’t stay with him.

“Have you ever told him you’re in love with him,” Peoria County District Attorney Jerry Brady asked.

“No,” said Dobilaite.

The whole time at the booth was tense. Dobilaite disliked the translator provided by the county and often corrected him. Nathan Leuthold was also visibly frustrated with the translation and eventually raised his hand and offered his help. Judge Kevin Lyons said no.

But in the end the woman spoke English very comfortably, seemingly without the difficulties she had at the beginning of her testimony.

Brady asked her if Denise Leuthold has ever been on international trips, sports, filming, home visits in Chicago, or even trips to a local spa. Dobilaite said no, adding that Nathan Leuthold is the only one she can speak to in her native language.

Brady replied that Denise Leuthold also went on the mission trips to Lithuania and that she spoke the language. Dobilaite replied that she was not fluent in Lithuanian and did not like speaking Lithuanian.

Brady also showed Dobilaite an email from the defendant to her, promising to work harder on their relationship. The email, sent on January 18, 2013, begins by saying, “I let you down.”

It continued, “From now on, I want to do anything for you and this relationship… I am so blessed to have you in my life,” read the email, which was sent about a month before Denise Leuthold’s death received a single gunshot wound at her home on Mossville Road.

Prosecutors accuse Nathan Leuthold of staging a burglary and then killing his wife. He is charged with first-degree murder and faces at least 45 years behind bars if convicted.

A spa owner testified that Nathan and Denise Leuthold were regular customers at their shop, as was Dobilaite.

But Paola Hinton told jurors she didn’t know Nathan and Denise Leuthold were married until she was killed, even though Nathan Leuthold bought several gift certificates for his wife from the spa.

Rather, Hinton testified, she always saw him with Dobilaite. Nathan Leuthold, she said, would help with the communication barrier since Dobilaite only spoke in her native language.

But defense attorney Hugh Toner used Dobilaite’s testimony to refute this, noting that she did not have a driver’s license at the time. Nathan Leuthold would drive her to the spa and pay from their joint account. Toner also noted that Dobilaite was not a citizen, so it was easier to get a bank account with someone else.

When asked by Brady why Denise Leuthold’s name wasn’t on the account, Dobilaite said flatly that Nathan Leuthold was her sponsor.

The Lithuanian woman’s testimony came after nearly an hour of legal wrangling, during which prosecutors offered her immunity from anything she said on the witness stand. With that condition, she was forced to testify or risked being despised. This issue, along with other litigation, took up much of the afternoon session, meaning the trial could move into next week.

When Dobilaite came to the United States, she attended college in Florida before coming to Peoria, where she spent time at Illinois Central College before attending a school in Chicago. In Peoria she helped with the Leutholds’ children and gave piano lessons.

Brady highlighted the fact that her legal fees were paid for by Nathan Leuthold’s parents, who also told her not to speak to the police – a statement confirmed by Dobilaite.

Earlier in the day, an inmate at the Peoria County jail said Nathan Leuthold told him his wife was “presumptuous” and that he wanted to get on with his life since he had found another woman.

David D. Smith, who is serving a 14-year sentence on a drug conviction, also told jurors that Nathan Leuthold allegedly confessed to waiting in a closet for his wife to return home and then shooting her once in the head.

“They had words and then he shot her in the head,” Smith said.

Smith’s testimony is part of an agreement with prosecutors to reduce his sentence to 10 years in prison and drop a pending drug case.

Nathan Leuthold, Smith said, approached him within weeks of his arrival at the Peoria County jail in March 2013 and sought his advice. He quickly trusted Smith, and the two talked “for hours every day,” Smith testified. After each conversation, Smith went back to his cell to write down what Nathan Leuthold had told him.

And that’s despite a “handshake” agreement not to share information with others.

The details provided by Smith were nearly consistent with what prosecutors have learned from others. Nathan Leuthold changed into his black hoodie sweatshirt after parking in nearby Robinson Park amid fears of being spotted by a neighbor, Smith said.

He researched ways to kill his wife and initially thought poison was the better option, but decided to use a handgun, Smith said. Leuthold told Smith he searched the internet for ways to silence a .40 caliber Glock, which was the same type of gun that was apparently used to shoot Denise Leuthold.

Smith asked Nathan Leuthold to write a list of things that were stolen from the house. This list also reached the police.

In what appeared to be a tactical move, Toner declined to cross-examine Smith after a long lunch break.

The trial will continue on Thursday.
