Boobs on Your Tube “All American” Continues to Change the Game for Black Lesbian Representation on TV

Friends, we’ve reached the end of 2018 for Boobs on Your Tube! Our TV crew has written almost 300 TV posts this year and we couldn’t be prouder and now we’re going to take a few weeks to load up and catch up on the shows we’ve missed one by one and get ready for one even better in 2019! We still have a few things in the pipeline: next week’s list of the best LGBT episodes of 2018 and a recap of our favorite TV posts of the year. Plus, you’ll still catch Heather and Riese doing the Pop Culture Fix and we’ll be covering all the very exciting news.

This week, Riese released a list of the best LGBT TV shows of 2018. Kayla rounded up the rather bonkers Riverdale midseason finale. Carmen rounded up another Jennifer/Khalil-heavy Black Lightning. And Valerie – holy cats y’all – recaps the entire Elseworlds SuperFlarrow crossover AND Legends of Tomorrow in three days. A feat by a true pro, don’t try it at home.

Here’s everything else that ended in 2018.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend 408: “I’m Not Who I Used To Be”

Written by Valerie Anne

In this week’s episode, Valencia was paired with Heather, hands down my favorite character on this show. It’s Valencia’s high school reunion and it’s at Heather’s bar (and run by Heather’s husband), so Heather is there too. Heather has a hunch there’s someone at the reunion, an ex, that Valencia doesn’t want to face. She assumes it was a girl, the first girl Valencia ever loved; Throughout all of this conjecture, Valencia just “closes my eyes,” but Heather thirsts for drama, so she runs with it. Heather bounces around at the reunion, pointing at girls and trying to guess who it is, even naming a punishment until Valencia agrees to tell her the story to shut her up. She tells the story of the time she cheated on Josh with her chemistry lab partner because she thought she was in love, and while tucked into a varsity jacket she gave an ultimatum: meet me under the bleachers or we’ll go our separate ways forever. Valencia is careful to use gender-neutral pronouns throughout, but Heather replies with an excited demand to be shown the woman in question.

Heather’s husband Hector pulls out a treasure chest he kept from their senior year, and Valencia discovers that her letter was never delivered.

After all, the person to whom she wrote the note was not a woman but Father Brah. Heather gives Valencia props for using her sexual fluid as a diversionary tactic, but Valencia correctly points out that she didn’t do any such thing, Heather was just guessing.

Valencia insists that she’s in love with Beth, but there’s definitely a moment where if Father Brah had ripped his collar off and stopped being a priest on the spot, it seemed like Valencia might have eloped with him. But in the end, they decide their moment is over; but at least they had that moment of closure.

The good news is that Valencia will be with us, as the characters cheekily quipped, “until the end of the series…the holidays,” which of course ends on Valentine’s Day, because Rebecca Bunch is love-addicted and didn’t want it any other way.

I have a feeling Beth won’t be there much, but then again I kind of thought Valencia’s sexuality would never be mentioned again, and here we are with Heather saying it out loud, so who knows.

Spencer returns home from the dance to find Coop waiting for him on the front steps. She wants to get herself and Shawn out of the gang, but so far she’s only managed to earn Tyrone’s wrath. Spencer puts his arm around her shoulders and promises that he will never leave her. Coop leans into her best friend’s embrace and assures him that she knows. The next morning, Coop urges Shawn to stick to his dreams and not give up his new job at the production company. Tyrone’s threats have made Shawn more cynical, and he brushes aside Coop’s concerns.

“That’s the problem with you and your boy Spencer,” Shawn says. “You think life’s like a bloody fairy tale — like we all have a chance at greatness — but that’s not how the world works for the rest of us.”

Coop remains optimistic that Shawn’s world can change if he sticks to his dreams, but just as she gets the words out of her mouth, Tyrone knocks. Shawn invites his boss over, and Tyrone delivers Shawn’s daughter, Maya, a toy…in that cute but menacing way TV villains do. As Tyrone gives the toy to Maya, he says, “Do you like kittens? All little girls like kittens, right?” and then, after turning to Coop, he adds, “Isn’t that true?” I’m not sure what the show intended with that line; I suppose it was meant to be another of Tyrone’s homophobic taunts, but I got caught at the double entender and just laughed hysterically.

The shooting at the barber shop has caused a lot of excitement for the gang, so Tyrone shuts things down until things cool down. Before leaving, Tyrone threatens Coop again – if she and Shawn aren’t faithful to him, he will pursue them – and the threat is enough to send Coop to Beverly Hills for help. She and Spencer loop Coach Baker’s wife, Laura, a local attorney, into Tyrone’s threats, and she advises Coop to share what she knows about Tyrone’s operation with the police. Unfortunately, Coop doesn’t know enough to warrant a deal with the district attorney, but Shawn does. Coop and Spencer return to Crenshaw in hopes of convincing him.

You can imagine how this conversation went. Snitches are sewn, Shawn reminds her, so he doesn’t rat on Tyrone; he will find his own way. And for a second, it looks like he’s found it: he gives Tyrone every dollar he saved to buy his way out, and enthusiastically returns to his apartment. Shawn calls Coop and thanks her for trusting him. He’s the happiest we’ve ever seen him… giddy at the prospect of starting a new life with his daughter in Louisiana. And so, of course, at that precise moment, a rival gang member pulls up and fires two shots into his chest… revenge for the barber’s shots… the shots echoing in Coop’s ears.

Coop retreats to Spencer’s apartment, her t-shirt stained with Shawn’s blood, and mourns the loss of her friend. Her chosen family – Spencer, his mother and Patience – are all there to comfort her in her grief. The next day, Patience and Coop visit the makeshift memorial erected where Shawn died and pay their respects. Patience admits that while she knows the moment is tough, she’s relieved that Coop will finally be gone from this life. But Coop isn’t ready to let go just yet, and as Tyrone and his crew roll up to the memorial, Coop greets them like she’s one of them… because now she is.

All American returns January 16 on the CW with new episodes.

Charmed 109: “Jingle Hell”

This isn’t gay but I couldn’t let the week go by without letting you know: THE VERA SISTERS DRINK COQUITO ON CHRISTMAS EVE JUST LIKE THE PUERTORICANS THAT THEY ARE!!! Was mentioning the drink, largely reduced to a recurring joke, worth capitalizing on? YES, IT WAS.

Eggnog is good and all, but coquito is life. This sort of specificity to Puerto Rican culture, as opposed to the broad or generic “Latinx culture,” is rarely seen on screen. Much like the Puerto Rican flag hanging in the background of Mel’s bedroom, it’s subtle but a hell of a deal. Other Puerto Rican Christmas items mentioned in this week’s episode: fried plantains and a pilón (similar to a mortar and pestle used by Maggie in the photo above), a tool used in traditional Puerto Rican cooking.

PS: Jada is still hot in case you’re wondering. And according to one of our straddlers looking at Aleyse Shannon’s Instagram account this week, the actress confirmed she’s queer in real life, too. Valerie Anne, an Internet sleuth after my heart, has independently confirmed this information from the post in question and screen capped it for you, just in case you’re internet savvy like me! – Carmen

Critical Role Campaign Two: Mighty No

As this is the last boob tube of the year, I just wanted to remind everyone that Beau is still queer about Critical Role in this campaign. She hasn’t met any ladies since we last spoke, but Travis has been taking care of Yasha while Ashley Johnson is away and he’s added some fun flirty flair and Beau is always up for it. It’s clear everyone is very supportive of this slow-burn potential relationship, and it makes my heart happy at how unapologetically queer this little nerdy show can be. — Valerie Anne

The young and the restless

Last week, Y&R ended its week with Tessa being kidnapped just as she was leaving to meet Mariah. Of course, three of Genoa City’s Big Little Liars – Victoria, Nikki and Sharon – are behind it. They put a black sack over Tessa’s head and drag her out into the Wisconsin wilderness. They are convinced that Tessa was behind transporting JT’s body, blaming the fire at the Newman stables and Victor for his murder, but a distraught Tessa assures them that she is not. Once she manages to convince them, they drop her off at the curb and let her find her own way home. A traumatized and frigid Tessa calls Mariah for help and she rushes to her rescue. As she comforts the tearful and remorseful Tessa, Mariah realizes how much she loves her and begs Tessa to stay, “The thing is, I need your face, I need you and I know that now, so you can’t go, okay? And I won’t go.”

Later in the week, Tessa’s trauma continues and Mariah does her best to convince her that what happened to her is not her fault. Mariah pushes for more answers about what happened, but Tessa declines. As is her wont, Mariah keeps pushing until Tessa reveals the truth: Not only were Victoria and Nikki involved in the kidnapping, Mariah’s mother was also involved. Mariah is shocked — her mother is a social worker who counsels abused women to make a living — and she’s not ready to let it go, despite Tessa’s insistence.

Mariah confronts her mother about traumatizing her friend, and Sharon doesn’t apologize. She reminds Mariah that Tessa aroused suspicion through the Big Little Liars’ blackmail. Mariah reminds her mom that she’s the one who actually killed someone and covered it up, so maybe she shouldn’t throw so many rocks out of her glass house. Mariah asks Sharon to leave Tessa alone, but she refuses; Sharon wants Tessa out of Mariah’s life and she is determined to make it happen. first stop? The GCAC, where after talking to Tessa, she ruins the singer’s chances of getting a job there.

As much as I enjoyed hearing Mariah reaffirm her love for Tessa this week, Sharon’s characterization is so lopsided that it was really difficult to watch this week’s episodes. The writers essentially turned her into Nikki Newman, and it just didn’t work for me. – Nathalie

Coronation Street

This week on the Cobbles, Kate and Robert are going to the fertility clinic to see if it’s even possible to go through with their baby-making plan. Despite Imran’s warning, Kate is sticking with her fertility test and subsequent counseling from Rana. But when the counselor says her partners need to know about insemination for the process to move forward, Kate knows it’s time to let Rana and her cousin (Robert’s fiancée) in on the plan.

Robert doesn’t even get a chance to tell Michelle about the insemination plan as she tells him that she has reconsidered the possibility of having a child with him. He rushes to the medical center to stop Kate from telling Rana; Now that Michelle is open to the possibility, Robert wants to take the chance with her. Kate is heartbroken by Robert’s revelation and when Rana discovers she is crying, Kate reveals her ill-conceived plan and Robert’s decision to back down. Rana is taken aback, but Kate insists they work together to convince Robert that her plan is still the best option. Rana refuses to help Kate deprive Michelle of the opportunity to have a child. She blames Kate for trying to plan everyone else’s life without their consent and leaves her fiancée.

Rana goes over to the Rovers for a drink and glares at Robert across the bar. Alya shows up and offers to be a kind ear for her former best friend and sister-in-law. After hearing the story, Alya suggests that maybe the reason she never really wanted to have a child is because deep down she knew she wasn’t with the right person. Rana is skeptical and doubts she would even consider it now that the trust between her and Kate is gone. – Nathalie

Camping 106: Birthday Party (Part 2)

Well, what I wrote in my review of the Camping Pilot came true in the last episode of the series: Harry was the only good thing about the series. So much so that when Orvis had to leave her and go back to his horrible parents, he tells her he loves her more than anyone else. This after Kathryn shows up high up in the middle of the night and tries to shoo him away, but Harry manages to lull her to sleep by telling her the saddest story of how her first love died and she woke up every day for ten years and thought her broken heart would kill her too, but it never did. She survived. humans survive. They do. In the end, not only Orvis realizes that Harry is the best. Jandice sleeps with her and decides to stay. — heather
