With the dominance shown in the rodeo over the past week by a daughter of PC Frenchman Hayday, we decided to go to the beginning of this dynasty and speak to Tigh and Breelyn Cowan of T4 Quarter Horses – and the home of Sun Frost . Tigh’s father, Pat Cowan, is responsible for this yellow stallion who undeniably helped create a tougher, grittier, faster breed of barrel horse and horse-athlete. We’ve covered the story from the beginning – how a trio of Sun Frost’s full brothers (Running Gun, Pick Pocket and Frostwood Roan) led to Sun Frost’s quest to own a stallion; how he began his competitive career as a clipper in high school rodeos at the age of two; The day a sucker through his gaskin almost ended his life as a 3 year old and which led to the sale of PC Frenchman’s Hayday and the legacy that move created. We touched on the different kinds of reputations that some think of when they mention Sun Frost, but also how special they are when you understand that their uncanny intelligence and ability to think quickly while moving their feet, are. Now that hurricane NFR has ended, the world’s best barrel racers of 2o19 took to Instagram to reflect on their post-NFR finals experiences.
1. Hailey Kinsel Lockwood, $283,674
World’s top barrel racer Hailey Kinsel Lockwood had a lot to say after NFR.
She thanked everyone in her circles for their support and dedication, including fellow barrel racers Lisa Lockhart and Ivy Conrado-Saebens. And, of course, she had to thank her favorite wife, sister.
“You’re just the greatest thing in my book,” Kinsel Lockwood said of Sister. “You’ve gone beyond anything I’ve ever asked you to do.”
She even shared some star group shots.
“Inspired and blessed to be with this group of equestrians for two weeks!” she wrote.
3. Nellie Miller, $204,168
Nellie Miller, COWGIRL’s Nov/Dec 2019 cover cowgirl, also shared a photo of the entire NFR barrel racing crew.
“There was a lot of success and a lot of heartbreak,” Miller said, “but in the end 15 girls tested their hearts in the most extreme conditions for two weeks and it’s a great honor to share this experience with them.”

PRESIDENT/CEO CORNER March the month we celebrate the color green on St. Patrick’s Day and in rodeo we celebrate that same color with some big payouts including RodeoHouston for the barrel racers and RFD-
the first year that the Maple Leaf Circuit has its own team and that is very exciting for the sport as we have a lot of great rodeos and athletes north of the border. Even though this year’s event doesn’t count towards the WPRAWorld leaderboard, you can still bet that every cowgirl will do their best for a shot at that prestigious title. We will be holding our annual WPRA Board of Directors meeting in conjunction with the RAM NCFR this year. We will be welcoming many new members to the Board, so we would like to take this time to say thank you to those who have served faithfully in these positions in the past. Each of these ladies served the federation out of passion for the sport and I think them for their tireless efforts to advance the federation. Retired include Stacey Freitas (California), Toni Karre (Turquoise) and Patti McCutchen (Roping Director). Next time you see these ladies, thank them for their time and dedication to the sport of women’s rodeo. A big thank you to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo for stepping up and being a significant catalyst in bringing breakaway roping to the forefront of PRCA-sanctioned rodeos. From the reports I have received it has been very well received by the fans in Fort Worth and I thank every ropemaker who has competed for their professionalism in this new arena. I’m excited about the future of this event and the future of two women’s events at PRCA-sanctioned rodeos. While we know there will be challenges and bumps along the way into uncharted territory, we ask for your patience with the directors, office and rodeo staff as we work together to grow this event. I also want to acknowledge and congratulate Jimmie Smith on being named the 2020 Jerry Ann Taylor Best Dressed Award Winner in Fort Worth, Texas. What a cool outfit you had and I loved the shine and professional look you had. You really honored the late Jerry Ann Taylor with your outfit and hope she makes many more appearances on the road. who do not have a score/time will not receive any tour points. In tournament format rodeos, points are awarded based on progress in the rodeo. Competitors will be ranked 1-40 based on their furthest progress in the tournament. Competitors who reach the finals will be ranked according to the highest score/fastest time in the final round. Participants without a final score will be ranked with the highest score/fastest time in the semi-finals. After the competitors have been ranked and assigned points in the final round, the competitors in the semi-final round will be ranked according to the highest score/fastest time in the semi-final round. After Competitors in the Finals and Semi-Finals have been ranked and points assigned, Competitors in the Long Go Rounds will be ranked by highest total points/fastest total time and assigned the relevant remaining points. Competitors must attend and compete in a minimum of 35 ProRodeo Tour rodeos for their points to count toward 2020 ProRodeo Tour standings and advance to the ProRodeo Tour playoffs. Qualification for the ProRodeo Tour Playoffs and Finals is based solely on the 2020 ProRodeo Tour standings. In addition, fines for participating in the 2020 ProRodeo Tour events will be doubled and competitors participating in these events will receive a deduction of 50 tour points per tour rodeo.

Competitors can still compete in a rodeo, although not eligible, as long as they pay their dues to the WPRA office before the books close. Failure to comply will result in exclusion. See Rule 10.4.1.7. in the 2020 WPRA Rule Book. A WPRA member may not participate in, or perform at a PRCA rodeo, a non-WPRA sanctioned PRCA rodeo. No WPRA member may enter an invitational race held at a PRCA sanctioned rodeo unless specific approval is obtained from the WPRA Board of Directors. FIRST WINNER Cassie Bahe Named Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Breakaway Roping Champion By Amy Wilson The 124th Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo continues to be legendary, but in new ways. They moved to the new Dickies Arena, implemented a new rodeo format and added WPRA Breakaway Roping with an equal additional $127,600 payout
Dollar. Each ProRodeo event featured 56 competitors divided into seven groups that competed in two rounds. Money won determined who advanced to the semifinals or wild card round and eventually the championship finals. Cassie Bahe, along with her younger sister Anna, earned the opportunity to rope at FWSSR by being ranked high enough in the WPRA Breakaway Roping World Standing after her success on the Wilderness Circuit. “We were about 30 cents apart going into the final [Wilderness Circuit],” said Cassie. “In the end I came second and my sister was first.” Cassie, 24, learned rope from her father, Francis, when she was about 5 years old. “My father was always a really good rope maker, but he mainly did team ropes. He started us rappelling and I’ve loved it ever since,” she explained. “There has never been a time that I didn’t think I would make rope.” With the recent advancement of the breakaway cable in the professional field
Round on a 2.6 second run, but Cassie missed her first calf. “I was kind of really down and I thought I was going to get out of there. But I came back the next day and won the round that put me in the semifinals,” Cassie said. Her 2.4 second streak was enough to advance her to the semifinals. “I really love this tournament format, which is based on money won.” With a few days off, Cassie, who is originally from Grantsville, Utah but now lives in Idaho Falls, Idaho, was able to enjoy everything Texas has to offer but her Focus was still on abseiling. She and Anna abseiled a few times with James Barton. “That helped a lot,” she said. “It’s definitely nice to do some training runs and especially with his help – he’s been great.” They also watched the calves at Dickies every night. Cassie Bahe took home over $23,000 from the Lone Star State after winning the first breakaway roping title at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Bahe and her younger sister Anna both competed in the final aboard the family’s equine partner, Roy, a 13-year-old chestnut gelding. Rodeo, Cassie and other runaways have experiences they’ve never had before. “This is my favorite rodeo,” she said of FWSSR at Dickies Arena. “The committee is great. We ate dinner in the candidates’ hospitality most nights and I showered in the dressing room there. They are just so accommodating especially for booths and RV hookups – it was amazing. DIFFERENT YEAR, SAME RESULT Kinsel Lockwood Top Barrel Racer in Fort Worth for Second Consecutive Year By Kristen M. White Hailey Kinsel Lockwood had a unique accomplishment. Not only did she notch up back-to-back wins at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, but she did so at two different venues and in a new format this year.
Lockwood was the last winner at the historic Will Rogers Coliseum last year and then returned to defend that title on February 8th with a win at the brand new Dickies Arena two rounds of semifinals before the Sudden Death Finals. “It’s so historic running [Will Rogers] over there and you think of how many amazing horses ran down that lane,” she said after the win. “Winning that was really special, but then coming here and telling a new story for all the horses that will one day walk down this alley is really cool.” Her bookend wins in various chapters of the Forth Worth Rodeo are a unique addition to your resume. “I’m still trying to process the last few days!”

Lockwood posted to Facebook after her win. “Sister got us a check in the semifinals, then came back last night and won the finals with the rodeo’s fastest time. It’s just amazing and I’m so grateful for the ride.” Lockwood raked in more than $23,000 in Fort Worth, including $20,000 for the winning run alone. This brought her very close to reaching the $1 million revenue mark from WPRA sanctioned events, leaving just $20,907 to reach that milestone. Her time in the finals also set a new arena record. She was the first participant in the final round and set the pace with a 16.30 second run that nobody could quite catch up with. She rode her trusty sidekick, Hailey Kinsel Lockwood, who set the fastest time yet at Dickies Arena on the final lap of the 2020 edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. FLORIDA RNCFR PREVIEW BEGUN Talented barrel racers look forward to RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo By Neal Reid F or circuit competitors, nothing beats the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, and this year’s crop of talented barrel racers is well prepared and ready for one national title to run
this year’s championship event. Whether it’s an experienced vet or a beginner traveling to Kissimmee, Florida for the first time, the RAM NCFR is a special rodeo that they thoroughly enjoy. That’s certainly the case for Megan Champion, a mother of three from Ukiah, California, who won the California Circuit year-end and average titles in her rookie year. “I’m pretty excited about it,” said Champion, who finished second to Carly Taylor for the 2019 WPRA Rookie of the Year award. “Who knows? I might never make it again. I’m excited, so I’ll just take that excitement and have fun .” Champion said she wasn’t aware until midway through the rodeo at the Circuit Finals that she had a chance to top 2017 WPRA World Champion Nellie Miller and earn her first ticket to the RAM NCFR, which took place on March 2nd will be held at the Silver Spurs Arena at Osceola Heritage Park through April 4. “I didn’t realize I could win before the Circuit Finals,” said Champion, who achieved her performance aboard a pair of mares named Katy and Smarty “For some reason I thought the season was over. Being close to Nellie in the circuit (classification) was exciting in and of itself because she’s amazing. So I was just happy to make it there and there be.

Gates. “So I’m just going to do what I always do — try my best and let my horses do their best, and it’ll fall where it’s supposed to fall.” Montana Circuit year-end champion Lindsay Kruse knows how champion feels. Returning to RAM NCFR for the seventh time, she will join her husband – 2009 PRCA World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Jesse Kruse – as a competitor in the stacked field. Lindsay and Jesse qualified for the event together during their relationship in 2015, but this will mark the first time the couple can compete in the national championship at the same time. “The last time we qualified, he had to have knee surgery right after the Circuit Finals, so we couldn’t compete together,” said Lindsay Kruse. “You can do what you love together and you understand when it’s hard and not going well. You get the point, so there’s no need for explanation.” The Kruses will also have the support of their three children — all ages 8 or younger — as the Winston, Montana family travels together, and Lindsay will be aboard their trusty mare, Cover Girl, be in Kissimmee. The 9-year-old horse helped Kruse walk away from the circuit with the barrel racing season title as she finished nearly $10,000 ahead of Margaret Poloncic when the dust settled. It will be Cover Girl’s first trip to RAM NCFR – Kruse lost her last big horse, Harley, after they competed in the 2016 event together
“Then after one of my runs, I realized I was $200 away and could still win the saddle. I thought, ‘What? How cool!’ It definitely gave me a confidence boost like, ‘Okay, I can do this.'” She edged Miller by $30,232 to $26,515 in last season’s standings, also taking home the average crown after a trio of solid runs. Regardless of how the scenario unfolded, Champion said it’s exciting to have the chance to compete against such high-calibre talent at their circuit. “It’s rewarding and exciting to be able to run with the best girls in the world, but it’s also very humbling because you just never know,” Champion said. “You have as many downs as you have ups, so you can doubt yourself.” But thanks to Katy – a horse owned by Rachel Dice – and Smarty, who she owns, Champion has been able to make it big in the circuit ranks. “It’s all horses,” said Champion, who tests her mounts at the big Texas winter rodeos. “I’m just the jockey and I’m lucky that they do their job and love it. I just try to make them work and stay out of their way.” Champion will enjoy her time in Florida no matter what the outcome. “I’m just taking one run at a time and to be honest I’m just really grateful to be able to run there with the best girls,” said Champion, who tops the qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo

It gives us a platform to work with more pros for more money.” Thomas won big money – $9,130 – aboard her 14-year-old Sorrel Amos at the Circuit Finals after finishing a tenth of a second ahead of Kelley Carrington for the average title had landed. It came as a shock to the system when Thomas saw that she and the horse she had bought from Linda Gail Stewart deserved a trip to Kissimmee when she was seven. “He’s always been really fond of that pen, and he just made three solid runs and gave me everything,” said Thomas. “I really didn’t expect to win the average because it was a really tough group of girls. We had girls that went to NFR and girls that almost made it to NFR and it was going to be a really tough group. “I just wanted to have fun and do my best. So it was a welcome surprise.”

PROCOM TURNOUT/RELEASE DEADLINES Procedure: A contestant wishing to make a notified turn out or release must notify PROCOM no later than three hours prior to the performance/slack of which she is turning out, unless an earlier deadline applies (see follow- ing). Morning Slack: A contestant desiring to make a notified turn out or release for a morning section of slack must so notify PROCOM no later than the turn out deadline of the previous evening’s performance or 5 p.m. (Colo- rado Mountain Time) of the day prior to such section of slack if there is no performance the previous evening. It is important to remember that all times are based on Mountain Standard Time. The only official turnout or release is through PROCOM. Notifying the rodeo secretary is not official. DEADLINE FOR PAYING ENTRY FEES: 10.5.4 Contestants competing at the rodeo must pay entry fees to the rodeo secretary at the rodeo or entry fees must be received in the WPRA office by 3:00 PM Mountain time, Tuesday following the end of the rodeo. 10.5.4.1. Contestants turning out of a rodeo must have entry fees paid in the WPRA office by 3:00 PM Mountain time, Tuesday following the end of the rodeo.
