HYATTSVILLE, Md. – They needed a place to mourn, so they flocked to Kevin Ward’s quiet church and sought out the community he had taught them to seek. Here, Ward, the mayor of this small Maryland town, had helped set up the church’s coronavirus vaccine clinic, facilitated a weekly meal distribution, and delivered a moving sermon on hope and helping one another.
But now he was gone.
Three days earlier, Ward had been found dead in a public park from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The news first reached his husband and sons, and then devastated the tight-knit community of Hyattsville, where he had made history as the city’s second black and first openly gay mayor.
Ward had been her core – the one offering diplomacy in the midst of heated local politics, the perfect gospel song for a struggling friend, or a handwritten note to his husband and sons to remind them how much he cared. He had seen a therapist and spoken candidly about the toll of the pandemic and racial injustice, how much he felt grief over the death of his mother and how difficult it had been battling cancer twice.

But no one in their life saw this coming. Everyone tried to understand.
His death came amid a spate of high-profile suicides by black people — the 26-year-old son of Regina King; Cheslie Kryst, 30, a former Miss USA; and “Walking Dead” actor Moses J. Moseley, 31 – who is drawing attention to a growing crisis that experts say has gone unacknowledged for too long. Even when suicide deaths among white men in the United States fell 3 percent from 2019 to 2020, they rose 3 percent among black men, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in November.
Those inside and outside of Ward’s circle wondered about Ward and the national conversation about mental health and stigma in the black community, and even those closest to Ward struggled for answers.
At church, however, the moment compelled them to step up and reach out to create new spaces in his legacy where they could share their struggles.

Ward’s sermon from last year was on a TV in the lobby. They paused to take it in, his deep and soothing voice moving between their silences.
“I stopped by here this morning to tell you it’s time to get together,” the mayor said. “We must come together as an immovable force, for the power is in our being together.”
“Like the sun shines on you”
Long before he was elected mayor, before he ran for city council, and before he left Texas for the east coast, Kevin Ward was a human magnet. He attracted people.
He was raised as an only child in suburban Dallas, raised primarily by his mother while having a complicated relationship with his father, whose nickname “Scooter” he adopted as his own. Although he didn’t talk about it much, his childhood had been hard and often lonely.
So he pledged to raise a living, chosen family.

On the Texas A&M campus, Stephannie Oriabure became one of its first recruits.
She first spotted him at freshman orientation, one of the few other black kids in a sea of 200 new students, mesmerizing the crowd as he danced with abandon to a hip-hop jam.
“Who,” recalls Oriabure, thought, “is that the guy?”
She found out a few days later when she introduced herself to her leadership program.
He held out his hand in a handshake — a gesture she found hilariously formal for two 17-year-olds.
“Hi,” he said, “I’m Kevin L. Ward.”
Even then, it was a testament to Ward’s cool confidence, a kind of assertive warmth he exemplified for — and drew out of — so many in politics and life. For Oriabure, it was also her first glimpse of the “movers and shakers” who would become her new friend on campus, where Ward touched so many social circles that a 10-minute walk would take him twice as long.

Soon the “Brawler Crew of Two” became so involved in each other’s lives that they gained veto power over significant others.
When it came to attorney Chad Copeland, Oriabure never had to use him.
Copeland burst onto the picture at a human rights fundraiser in Dallas in 2004, and he describes his introduction to Ward as a romantic comedy meet sweetly — there was a window, a sunset, her staring eyes from across the room.
“I like your glasses,” Ward said.
For Copeland, it was a Cupid’s Arrow compliment.
Minutes later, he met Ward’s then-boyfriend.
Accepting temporary defeat, a still-smitten Copeland spent the next two years forging a deep friendship with Ward – he craved something more. The two balanced each other. Copeland was reserved and easygoing. Ward was a gregarious extrovert who always had a wit and strong opinions, about fashion, about politics, about people.

“When he talks to you,” Copeland said in an interview, “it’s like the sun is shining on you.”
By 2006, the two were together.
After her first meeting with the new couple, Oriabure pulled Ward aside.
“Kevin,” she recalls saying, “you better not screw that up.”
The chosen family
By 2007, all three had relocated to the Washington area, and Copeland and Ward were already thinking about their next generation.
They always knew they wanted a family. Copeland was adopted as a child. Ward had mentored children since college and returned to Texas each summer for RYLA, the leadership camp he attended as a teenager, serving for decades as a counselor and keynote speaker. They registered as foster parents in D.C. and when they got a call one winter evening that a 3 year old named Norman needed a home, they said yes.
They knew immediately that they wanted to be fathers to the little boy, whose quick wit and mannerisms were beginning to mirror Ward’s. At the adoption ceremony nearly two years later, Ward cried. They next adopted Sydney, their eldest son, who was 14 at the time. The couple wanted to buy a home for their sons to grow up in – and chose Hyattsville as their new home in 2014.
As a father, Ward was warm and strict. Sharing his passions, including an affinity for sneakers so large his collection had its own storage unit, he shared hugs and kisses. When his sons sat on the sofa, he was known to put an arm around them. But he also held them to high standards in school and in life, preparing them for the racism they would face as black men in America.

Ward’s love of children was also central to his professional life. He served as the assistant chief information officer for D.C.’s Child Family Services Agency. and most recently as Director of Technology for KIPP DC, which operates a network of charter schools. But he was always looking for more ways to give back, especially to children, Copeland said, and that desire was what propelled him into local politics. In 2015, he decided to run for Hyattsville City Council and fight to have the seat vacated by the woman who would eventually become the city’s first black woman mayor.
He wrote to Candace Hollingsworth on Facebook that year and within hours was sitting across from her at brunch. They connected through their southern roots. She hadn’t planned on drawing for anyone, but by the time they finished eating, Hollingsworth thought, “Oh, I hope he wins.”
“I felt like I was speaking to a person who cares about the right things,” she said.

About a week later, Ward invited her to the house to meet Copeland. Knowing she was from Memphis, he made cookies. She kicked off her shoes and sat down at the counter to eat, and with that, Hollingsworth became part of her family too.
After winning their respective races, they set out to explore Hyattsville — a quirky, diverse enclave just outside D.C. – to make it a place that welcomed all its inhabitants. They passed legislation to make it a sanctuary city and laid the foundation for a youth center with mentoring and homework help. For years, Ward also tried to set up a city program for free or low-cost childcare, Hollingsworth said, but bureaucracy prevented him from getting it off the ground.
In the fall of 2020, after nearly six years as mayor, a burned-out Hollingsworth realized she might be too tired to continue. Ward, then Council President, was the first person to call her. She knew he might lead differently than she did, but she entrusted her legacy to him. Over the phone, she told Ward that she would not be stepping down unless he was ready to take the helm.

“I’m ready,” he replied.
He was named interim mayor on January 1 and officially ran for the title in May. Ward, a Democrat, was running against another party establishment candidate who had served on the city council and had tens of thousands of dollars campaigning. Still, he rolled to victory.
On the day he was sworn in, Hollingsworth knew a key member of Ward’s crew was missing. His mother, who shared his strong personality, had died three years earlier. So the former mayor bought the new one a bright pink flower, his mother’s favorite color, to pin to his chest.
This past Thanksgiving, their large chosen family — Hollingsworth, Oriabure, Ward, Copeland and their children — gathered at the couple’s home. Copeland, the best cook, made a Martha Stewart spread. Hollingsworth brought buns, Oriabure the cheese potatoes and whiskey sours. Ward was responsible for the laughter.
Since his death on January 25, the three have been replaying their final moments with him.
It’s Christmas for Oriabure as he gave her a pair of black and white sneakers, though she insisted he didn’t get her presents. Her last goodbye was the same constant hug and “I love you” that had always made her feel important – one of her friend’s greatest gifts.
For Copeland, it’s the series of sweet moments in their last week together: extra hours of morning snuggles before getting up for their work day; While the family was watching a movie, Ward insisted that he wash Norman’s hair – one of his most prized responsibilities as a father.
And for Hollingsworth, there’s the unanswered news of his death anniversary. They tried to make an appointment for the meeting the next day. After hours of no response, she wrote, “Are you ok?”
Next she got the call from Copeland.
“I know without a doubt that Kevin knew he was loved. I also know that Kevin loved his people very, very much,” Hollingsworth said. “While I don’t know a person’s reasons or why, I feel like it was a decision he didn’t make because he wanted to, but because he felt he had to do it.”
The last sermon
In Kevin Ward’s silent church on the Friday after his death, his loved ones continued to listen – his words in the lobby, their own in the sanctuary.
There was the city manager, who never stopped wondering how she could have helped. The City Council President, who vowed to do whatever it takes to fill Ward’s “very big tennis shoes” as interim mayor. The State Delegate enveloping Hollingsworth in a long hug, tears streaming down both faces.
They said February would be a month to remember Ward’s legacy, that the city would be lit up in his favorite color purple, that mental health counselors would be sent to the church and that they would do their best to move forward with the warmth their mayor had made them all feel. They would mourn his death at a formal funeral scheduled for Friday morning.
After an hour of prayer and sharing, they headed back to the lobby and the television, where Ward’s voice was still delivering his final sermon.
“We must not look outside for the answers because I know where the answers are,” he said. “What we have to do is pull ourselves together. We must remember that we are repairing the gap.”
