Every year, 11-year-old Audrey Soape attends the daddy-daughter dance with her father at their local church in Pflugerville, Texas — it’s the highlight of their year.
But in March of last year, Audrey lost her father in a tragic accident. Her grandfather, who would have been her alternative date for the dance, also died just five weeks later.
“It was just a very turbulent time for all of us. Very emotional,” Audrey’s mom, Holly Soape, told CBS News. “A lot of grief, a lot of sadness, a lot of anger. Anytime I have an opportunity to bring some joy or excitement into the lives of both of my children, I absolutely jump at that moment.”

She wanted to make sure her daughter could still go to the dance with her friends – so she started thinking of different options.
“I knew it was going to be an emotional thing with the upcoming dance. It would be disappointing not to be able to go. She’s brought it up a few times and said she wishes she could go,” Soape said. “She once even asked if I would take her to the dance. I knew that if she left, I wanted it to be something really incredible. Something that would make her feel special and make her feel loved and important. So I tried to think of the coolest thing I could think of.”
And she had a very cool idea: Anthony Harris, a Philadelphia Eagles football player who is a family favorite.
“I knew it was a long shot. I didn’t really expect him to say yes,” Soape said. “I was shocked and overjoyed when he said he would do it.”

Harris has been the family’s favorite NFL player for years, and Holly Soape has been corresponding with him regularly via Instagram since March 2020. Every few months she would write to him to check in, and to her delight he would reply.
“I sent him encouragement and prayers before big games and during his career transitions. So we had this connection through social media, but we had never met him,” she said.
The story goes on
Soape also messaged him the day after her husband’s death, hoping he would return a word of condolences. Raised by a single mother, Harris wanted to return the support Soape had given him over the years.
When football season was over for the Eagles in mid-January, Harris told Soape that he was flying to Texas from Florida, where he lives off-season, to take Audrey to the father-daughter dance.
“I was super surprised. More than I can explain, surprised. And I was really nervous too,” Audrey said. “At first I was probably more nervous than excited because I didn’t know what I was going to say or do around him.”

Harris also bought Audrey a brand new dress and shoes to wear to the dance and arranged for her to have her hair and makeup done before the event.
“As the night wore on and time went by, he began to feel more like my boyfriend and I was able to talk to him and open up to him more,” Audrey said.

Holly Soape volunteered to be an attendant at the event so she could be there too. She said Harris did everything she could to help Audrey feel comfortable and enjoy the night.
“He started having conversations with her like asking about her day, asking about her dad, somehow making her laugh and getting her on the dance floor. Throughout the night, he really went out of his way to just make sure she felt special, that she was comfortable, and that she was having a good time,” Soape recalled.

“I think even days later we were still shaken by it. As if I was flipping through the images, I thought, ‘This actually happened. Like he really came,'” she said. “They really had a great time. And just seeing the smile on her face, it was just amazing.”
Though it’s been a difficult year for the Soape family, thanks to Harris’ kindness, Audrey was able to build some happy memories of the father-daughter dance.
“It really kind of changed the dialogue of the whole year. It was just this horrible, dark year that ended on this really, really positive note. And so it gave us a bit of joy and light at the end of a very dark tunnel. It was just a magical experience for everyone,” Soape said.
