Ole Miss loses beloved junior Thomas Hayes Mayo

Thomas Hayes Mayo, Junior Finance Major and resident of Oxford, died on Thursday April 14. He turned 21 just 12 days before his tragic death.

“We mourn the loss of Thomas Mayo, an Oxford native and young man who was loved by many, including classmates and parishioners,” said Brent Marsh, assistant vice chancellor and dean of studies. “We know there are many on our campus who are deeply impacted and we encourage them to reach out to others for support and to use the support services available on our campus.”

Mayo was a member of the ETA chapter of the Sigma Chi Brotherhood. A friend to many, he was loved by his fellow brothers and was a source of inspiration to those who knew him. Mayo’s friends remember his never-ending enthusiasm, positive attitude, and kindness towards others.

“His energy and always positive attitude were contagious to everyone around him,” said Thomas Hayden, a younger member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and one of Mayo’s close friends. “Thomas was one of the most tolerant and loving people you could ever meet. Not only was he one of my best friends, but someone who taught me so much. His efforts in his short life will have a lasting impact on everyone he touched and he will never be forgotten in this community and far beyond.”

Mayo was the youngest child in his family with three older siblings. He graduated from Oxford High School in 2019 where he played football for the Oxford Chargers and captained the team in his senior year.

He is survived by parents Cal and Caroline Mayo, sister Virginia Coan, brother William Mayo, sister Callie Mayo, and grandmother Stella Salmon. He also leaves behind his girlfriend, Georgia Hippe, as well as his many friends too numerous to list.

The University of Mississippi and Oxford communities are mourning the loss of 21-year-old Thomas Hayes Mayo, who died in Oxford on Thursday.

He graduated from Oxford High School in 2019, where he played football for the Chargers and served as captain in his senior year.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Mayo was a junior at the University of Mississippi and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

He was working on his Bachelor of Business Administration in finance and was a member of the Ole Miss Soccer Club, according to his LinkedIn page.

He has worked as a delivery driver for Oxford Floral since August.

The visit of Mayo takes place from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. on Monday in West Hall at the Waller Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church under the direction of Rev. Jody Burnett.

A private funeral service will be held at Oxford Memorial Cemetery at a later date.

The youngest of four children, he is the son of Cal and Caroline Mayo from Oxford.

In his obituary, he is described as someone who “loved his family, his friends, and his life. Thomas has never met a stranger. His stunning smile and genuine interest in people broke through all barriers. He rarely uttered negative words or thoughts about anyone. He saw the good in everyone and everywhere.”

On the Tribute Wall for Mayo on the Waller Funeral Home website, a childhood friend of Mayo said Mayo had shown him how to make a positive impact on those around him and called Mayo his “role model.”

Mayo is survived by his parents, sister Virginia Coan, brother William Mayo, and sister Callie Mayo. He is also survived by his grandmother, Stella Salmon, of Oxford.
