Every race, everything, everything was a family affair.
“And now having this shock of suddenly being at the Olympics and not being able to spend time with them, that was something I didn’t plan for. We planned all sorts of worst-case scenarios for the games, but that was something I didn’t see coming.”
The coronavirus may be easing in most parts of the world, but these are undeniably still the second consecutive Olympics in Covid. Everyone in China connected to the games knows that. The bubble is real and the bubble can suffocate. Life is like this: hotel, throat swab, bus, venue, bus, hotel. Olympia as a cultural exchange is an idea from then and from tomorrow. Maybe one day. Not now.
Meyers Taylor is Team USA’s reminder of all of that. This is her fourth Olympics and she is aiming for her fourth medal – her first gold. But on Jan. 29, two days after arriving in China, she tested positive for the coronavirus. So did her husband Nic Taylor, a deputy on the American men’s bobsled team. Likewise her almost two-year-old son Nico. Likewise her father Eddie Meyers, who was allowed to travel to help Nico.

The Olympic Games opened. Meyers Taylor would carry the American flag and lead Team USA to the legendary Bird’s Nest Stadium for the opening ceremony. Instead, she was isolated: alone in one room, with Nic in the next, and her father and Nico down a door.
Saturday was, she said, the first day she hadn’t cried. To be honest, it was still early in the day.
“I’m not a screamer,” she said. “There were many emotions every day. It was just really, really hard.”
The idea and ideal in all Olympic Games is to have a clear mind and a healthy body. Meyer’s Taylor’s brain is inevitably confused, even though Saturday brought hope. “I feel like my head is finally clearing,” she said. “It was pretty foggy and stuck with stress.” Her body is battered from her sport and isolation is making it worse because she hasn’t had regular access to physical therapy.

She trained in her room on an area of 10 meters. She has a barbell and eventually ended up on a stationary bike. This is an excellent setup for a salesperson attending a convention. It’s far from perfect for a top athlete just days away from chasing Olympic medals.
But Meyers Taylor’s situation is even more complicated – and more heartbreaking – because her positive test deprived her of Nico. The Taylors’ son was born prematurely and has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Meyers Taylor said his longest absence was nine hours – when she and Nic dropped him off at her parents’ house so they could sleep over together.
“And I stayed as long as I could,” she said, “and got there as soon as I could in the morning.”
So Nico, who turns 2 this month, is part of Meyers Taylor’s medal hunt. He has traveled the world with his parents as both were chasing the Olympics. Meyers Taylor is the highest-ranked athlete in monobob, a one-person, per-sled race that is new to the Games and will open the bobsleigh competition with two heats on Sunday and the final two on Monday. She is also the top placed rider in the two-woman sled and that competition is later in the week.
Before the Games, two medals wasn’t an outlandish expectation. Now – even if she’s asymptomatic, even if she’s out of close contact protocols – who knows? She was fourth after the first two monobob heats on Sunday morning, with two heats remaining on Monday. In her darkest moments of the past two weeks, she had to face the officials of the US Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation openly: she needed help.

“As an athlete, you want to say, ‘Oh, I’m the biggest and baddest. I have everything under control,” she said. “But I think I had to be really open and honest and tell them what I’m going through, tell them how hard I’ve fought through.”
The bandage, she said, helped her create a daily schedule. They worked to get her the right meals. They helped her stay in shape. They have been pushing to determine how much family time she can have without breaking protocols. “They really pulled their weight,” she said.
Where they can’t help Meyers Taylor: Being separated from Nico. She sees Nic at the track because he gets to be a stand-in and they can share the time to talk about family and sport. But her interactions with her son were brief. They can FaceTime, but Nico’s attention span makes it far from ideal. On Friday, they were able to see each other in person – but only for a few minutes.

“He’s just holding on to me and won’t let go,” Meyers Taylor said. “And even when I try to walk, he cries. It’s just… it’s pretty difficult.”
What she needs now: sleep. Somehow isolation doesn’t lead to rest.
“You’re like, ‘Oh, you’re not sleeping with a baby. That would be more relaxing,” she said. “But I think that’s the hardest part, not having him next to me at night.”
By Monday evening there will be a sheet with a finish order in the women’s monobob competition at the Beijing Olympics. Until February 19th there will be the same for the two-woman race. Both will feature Elana Meyers Taylor’s name, maybe with medals, maybe not. But that order – gold, silver, bronze, other – says nothing about what she went through here. These are the latest Covid Olympiads. This may not be noticeable from the outside. A 37-year-old mother and wife and medalist knows them by heart.

Elana Meyers Taylor This has been a dream of dreams.
“It was a dream of all dreams,” Elana Meyers Taylor said in an exclusive interview with Olympics.com on Sunday (February 20).
Three weeks ago she might not have seen this end coming.
Life handed Meyers Taylor Lemons, and she made them the fourth and fifth Olympic medals of her career.
The American bobsledder’s fourth Olympics got off to a rough start when the 37-year-old and her family tested positive for COVID-19 on arrival for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
Asymptomatically, Meyers Taylor relied on husband Nic Taylor, who also serves as her strength and conditioning coach and chiropractor, to stay competitive.
“It definitely wasn’t easy,” Meyers explained to Taylor. “They got me to the point where I could at least get to the start line and I knew if we could make it to the start line we would do good things.
“The other thing is that my husband is just one of the most positive, upbeat people I’ve ever met. He never gave up. Every day he says, ‘We’re going to do this, we’re going to do this.
“You know, I cry my eyes out in isolation and he’s like, ‘No, we’re going to do this. You’re okay. Everything’s fine.’ He just kept reminding me that we got it.”
“A moment I don’t know anyone else will ever have”
Even before Meyers Taylor made it out of isolation or onto the bobsleigh track, she had an Olympic moment that was all hers.
She was selected by a vote among her teammates from Team USA to carry the US flag at the opening ceremony.
Failing that, the honor went to the second-highest voter: speed skater Brittany Bowe.
Meyers Taylor called Bowe to let her know she would step in.
“As hard as it was not wearing it myself, seeing her wear it and having that moment to give her that was really cool.” It’s a moment I don’t know anyone else will ever get,” he told Meyers Taylor.
“To have that as part of my memories now, know that me and Brittany will be forever linked if we weren’t before. We were friends before but now I think we’re linked forever.”
At the closing ceremony on Sunday, Meyers Taylor carried the Stars and Stripes into the stadium.

“It may not shine like gold, but it shines even brighter in my heart.”
On the track, Meyer Taylor’s Games got a start thanks to their off-track work.
A passionate advocate for women, monobob made its Olympic debut in Beijing in part because of the work of Meyers Taylor and Kallie Humphries speaking about the importance of gender equality in sport.
“It’s important to have this event for a number of reasons,” said Meyers Taylor. “First, because it gives women two chances to win a medal at the Games. Having that and being on par with the men who have those two chances is just another step closer to justice.
And she took that opportunity — part of the International Olympic Committee’s prioritization of gender equality in the Olympics — to take silver behind Humphries.
Meyers Taylor hopes for another effect.
“The other thing is with monobob, because all the sleds are the same, the gear advantage is very limited and it allows a lot more countries to get in.”
On the penultimate day of the Games, Meyers Taylor added a fifth Olympic medal to her collection when she won bronze with brakewoman Sylvia Hoffman in women’s bobsleigh.
That medal means she’s finished on the podium in every Olympic race she’s competed in, which two weeks ago seemed almost impossible.
“How we started… I had no idea it was even going to be possible. So to come on the other end and have two medals and yeah, you know, they’re not gold medals, but they feel like gold medals, sure,” Meyers Taylor said. “It might not shine like gold, but it does in my heart it shines even brighter.”
