I have a feeling that’s not really happening anymore. But there were a few moments where I felt like everyone let go, and your shows definitely emulate that. Her music has been described as healing. Do you treat your performances as spiritual experiences between you and your audience?
Such an exchange takes place. I open every show with meditation and in that moment I can feel people’s hearts opening up and people saying, ‘Okay, I’m safe in this room.’ I think it helps people just sing louder after shows and to be freer and i see it. I see how open people feel, and I know it’s our spirits communicating with each other. It’s like the ego is gone. Nobody cares what people think anymore. It’s just like that, I just want to have fun. I think that’s a spiritual experience right there. So I experience it every night when I see people connecting so deeply.
What inspires you about musicians like SZA and Eryka Badu for your own music and how do you implement these inspirations?
I love their creativity. And the fact that they’re not afraid to just be themselves in their music. I see it with both of them in the words they use to write, I’m going to say, “What could you use that word in a song?” Can you talk about that in a song?” I just feel like they to continually expand my mind and musicality to, and it inspires me to, just be myself and not be bound by anything, any rules.
Which song on the album was the hardest to write?
two songs “100 Days” is this really gospel-inspired song. Writing was really easy. I wrote the whole song in one day but it was anything but. Because I knew I wanted a choral section in it. I knew I wanted to add an organ. I have all these things on my mind, but it was very meticulous to get it done and this was one of them. And then there is a song about the project called “Synergy”. The song took me so long it made me want to give up so many times but I’m so glad I did it because people love the song. The song started in a completely different key and I wrote it with my boyfriend. His name is Shaka. So it was a duet between me and him and then at first I thought I wanted to add someone else to the song and then I thought I’ll do it alone. So I’ll hit the key and stuff, I’ve tuned this song up and down so many times, I’ve rewritten the verse so many times. It’s funny because I ended up finishing the song. I went to Coachella this year, and on the drive back to Coachella, the second verse literally hit me in the head, I was like, “Oh my god.” I was with my friend Vron, who was helping me produce the album , we drove back together and I said, “We can’t go home. Go on, we gotta get in the studio.” So we went into the studio and I finished a song right there about a week before I had to submit the album. That was a fun song.
I love that. Are you from a church or religious background?
You said you wanted to like a very gospel-inspired song. On my father’s side there are many Baptists, Christians. I just grew up going to church with my grandma and dad and to be honest I feel like the teachings there, I’m sure some of them are in my subconscious, beautiful in my subconscious. I remember my excitement about going to church, especially as a kid, was the music. I just loved music. And that sticks in my heart more than anything from the church. I still love gospel music and I listen to gospel music because it feels so good to hear it. So I wanted to write a song that had that vibe.
Do you feel that this religious background has influenced you a lot in your music at the moment and also in your spiritual journey because you are very spiritual?
I would say I don’t really consider myself religious or particularly attached to any religion. I’m really thankful that my parents used to tell me, ‘You can believe what you want to believe, that’s what we believe, we’ll show you what we believe. But you can build your own beliefs.” My father’s beliefs were rooted in Christianity, my mother’s beliefs in Buddhism. So I feel like I mixed the two to create my own. And I read a lot of books and have formulated my own beliefs that definitely drive the music I make, just reminding myself that there’s more to life than meets the eye. Music is more than what touches your ear, it has so much depth. There is power in knowing how deeply you can touch someone through music. That’s what motivates me to want to make music, to be like, ‘Oh, I can make people feel better. I can remind people that everything is going to be okay, I can get a crowd jumping at the same time to something that makes them smile.” Like those things really make me happy.
Yes, that’s a really nice thing. I remember when Butterfly came out I couldn’t stop playing it. Which Forest in the City song do you think resonates best with your fans?
I’ve noticed that a lot of people love “sorry”. And I could just see people singing “I’m sorry.” And they are so in. We all have things that we need to forgive each other and I just see how people embrace that when we sing the song together. I really think people love that.
Is this album a meditation in and of itself?
This album is a top-down kind of album. There is a whole story and experience when you do it is very meditative. So yes.
You’re on tour, how has it shown your fans new material?
How long has it been since you toured too? Like three years, it was a minute. It was cool. It’s been really fun to see that as the shows progress, more and more people know more about the songs. So it’s cool to see people learn more from the songs. And it’s also cool because the songs that everyone knows we all sing along to, that we all jam along to, and then the newer songs that I introduce people to, I just see people sitting and watching me like they’re in meditation watch me perform. And at first I thought I wish people would sing. And then I pulled out and thought, people have had such a good experience. It’s a unique experience. So it was nice to change that mindset and then really tap into it and say, wow, people are enjoying it in a different way.
What has been your favorite part of the tour so far?
So many things. I’m touring with people I really love. I feel like I’ve spent a lot of time learning who to bring to curate my family. And I think I’m in a really great place where I’m like, ah, I love the people with me. I obviously love everyone I’ve toured with, but it’s always like trial and error. I’m touring with people that I’m really clicking with now, which is really nice. Also, I really enjoy people’s reactions every night. People sing and like it no matter what mood I’m in before I go on stage. When I leave I’m just happy and tired, but fine and energetic.
Do you get that euphoric feeling after a show?
Yes! It’s so real because you’ve just shared so much and you feel like you’re floating.
What is the most important takeaway you would like to get from this album for others to hear?
I guess a feeling. Feel well. My biggest intention is simply no matter what song they click on, when the song ends they feel an inch better. I don’t even feel like I have words for it. It’s more of a feeling that I want to take away from people. And I feel like once you feel that way after listening to music, it’s like your soul is searching for music that makes you feel good. And I hope people remember that the music you listen to affects your state of mind. It affects your mental health, it affects your perception of yourself. And so I just hope people know it’s safe to listen to my music.
