Petula Sally Olwen Clark, CBE (born 15 November 1932) is a British singer, actress and composer with one of the longest careers by a British singer, spanning more than seven decades.

Clark’s professional career began as a children’s entertainer on BBC Radio during World War II. In 1954 she hit the charts with The Little Shoemaker, the first of her big British hits, and within two years she was beginning to record in French. Her international hits include “Prends mon coeur”, “Sailor” (a UK number one), “Romeo” and “Chariot”. Hits in German, Italian and Spanish followed. In late 1964, Clark’s success extended to the United States with a four-year streak of career-defining, often upbeat singles, many written by or co-written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent.

These songs include her signature song “Downtown”, “I Know a Place”, “My Love”, “A Sign of the Times”, “I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love”, “Who Am I”, ” Color My World”, “This Is My Song” (by Charles Chaplin), “Don’t Sleep in the Subway”, “The Other Man’s Grass Is Always Greener” and “Kiss Me Goodbye”. Clark was born on 15 November 1932 to Doris (née Phillips) and Leslie Noah Clark in Ewell, Surrey, England. Both of Clark’s parents were nurses at Long Grove Hospital in Epsom. Clark’s mother was of Welsh ancestry and her father was English. Sally’s stage name “Petula” was invented by her father, who joked that it was a combination of the names of his two former friends, Pet and Ulla.

During World War II, Clark lived with her sister at her grandparents’ house in Abercanaid, near Merthyr Tydfil, a small stone house with no electricity or running water and a toilet at the end of the garden. Her grandfather was a miner.[3] Her very first live audience was at the Colliers’ Arms in Abercanaid.[4] She also recalls living just outside of London during the Blitz, watching the dogfights in the air and running to bomb shelters with her sister. Later, when she was eight, she joined other children to record news with the BBC to be sent to their family members in the armed forces. The recordings took place in the Criterion Theater, an underground theater that was safe. When the air raid siren went off, other children were upset and shouts were made for someone to come forward and sing to calm them down. Petula volunteered and they liked her voice so much that they recorded it in the control room. Her song was “Mighty Rose”.[5]

As a child, Clark sang in the chapel choir and displayed a talent for impersonation, impersonating Vera Lynn, Carmen Miranda, and Sophie Tucker to her family and friends. Her father introduced her to theater in 1944 when he took her to see Flora Robson in a production of Mary Stuart; She later recalled that after the performance, “It was then that I made my decision to be an actress. … I wanted more than anything in the world to be Ingrid Bergman.” [7] Her first public appearances as a singer: in 1945 she performed with an orchestra in the entrance hall of Bentall’s Department Store in Kingston upon Thames for a can of toffee and a gold watch.[8]

By coincidence, by the age of seven, Clark was appearing on radio, film, print, television, and records. In October 1942, nine-year-old Clark made her radio debut while watching a BBC program with her father. She tried to send a message to an uncle stationed abroad, but the transmission was delayed by an air raid. During the bombing, the producer requested that someone perform to calm the nervous theater audience and she volunteered a performance of “Mighty Lak’ a Rose,” to an enthusiastic response. She then repeated her appearance for radio audiences and began a series of about 500 appearances on programs entertaining the troops.[9] In addition to radio work, Clark has frequently toured the UK with child actress Julie Andrews. Nicknamed the “Singing Sweetheart”, she performed for George VI, Winston Churchill and Bernard Montgomery. Also known as “Britain’s Shirley Temple”[10], it was the mascot of the British Army, whose troops would have their photos stuck to their tanks for good luck as they advanced into battle.[11]

While performing at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1944, Clark was discovered by film director Maurice Elvey, who cast her at age 12 as the precocious orphan Irma in his war drama Medal for the General. In quick succession, she starred in Strawberry Roan, I Know Where I’m Going!, London Town, Here Come the Huggetts, Vote for Huggett and The Huggetts Abroad, the second, third and fourth of four Huggett Family films. Although some of the films she made in Britain in the 1940s and 1950s were B movies, she worked with Anthony Newley in Vice Versa (directed by Peter Ustinov) and Alec Guinness in The Card. She also had a small role in I Know Where I’m Going.

In 1945, Clark was featured in the comic book Radio Fun, in which she was billed as “Radio’s Merry Mimic”. By then, Clark felt she had been playing child roles for too long.

In 1946, Clark began her television career with an appearance on a BBC variety show, Cabaret Cartoons, which led to her being signed to host her own afternoon series, Petula Clark. Pet’s Parlor followed in 1950.[13]

In 1947 Clark met Joe “Mr Piano” Henderson at the Peter Maurice Publishing Company. The two collaborated musically and were romantically linked for the next decade. In 1949, Henderson introduced Clark to record producer Alan A. Freeman, who with her father founded Leslie Polygon Records, for which she recorded her first hits. Clark had recorded her first release of the year, Put Your Shoes On, Lucy, for EMI and continued recording with singer Benny Lee on Decca. The Polygon label was funded with a portion of Clark’s earnings. She scored a string of big hits in Britain in the 1950s, including “The Little Shoemaker” (1954), “Mallorca” (1955), “Suddenly There’s a Valley” (1955) and “With All My Heart” (1956). . “The Little Shoemaker” was an international hit and reached number one in Australia, the first of many number one records in her career.

In late 1955, Polygon Records was sold to Nixa Records, then part of Pye Records, resulting in the formation of Pye Nixa Records (later simply Pye). This effectively signed Clark to the Pye label in the UK, for which she continued to record into the early 1970s.

During this time, Clark showed a keen interest in nurturing new talent. She suggested that Henderson be allowed to record his own music, and he had five chart hits on Polygon/Pye between 1955 and 1960.

In 1957 Clark was invited to perform at the Olympia in Paris, where she was received with acclaim despite her misgivings and a bad cold. The following day she was invited to the Vogue Records office to discuss a contract. There she met her future publicist, collaborator and husband of many years, Claude Wolff. Clark was immediately attracted, and when told she would work with him if she signed to the Vogue label, she agreed.[14]

In 1960 she undertook a concert tour of France and Belgium with Sacha Distel, who remained a close friend until his death in 2004.

While Clark was concentrating on her new career in France, she was racking up hit records in Britain into the early 1960s. Her 1961 recording of “Sailor” became her first UK number one hit, while such follow-up recordings as “Romeo” and “My Friend the Sea” propelled her into the UK Top 10 later that year. “Romeo” sold more than a million copies worldwide and won their first gold record, awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America.[15] In France, “Ya Ya Twist” (a French-language cover of the Lee Dorsey Rhythm and Blues song “Ya Ya” and the only successful recording of a Twist song by a woman) and “Chariot” (the original version of “I Will Follow Him” ) became huge hits in 1962, while German and Italian versions of her English and French recordings were also hitting the charts. Her recordings of several Serge Gainsbourg songs were also best sellers. She was also gifted the song “Un Enfant” by Jacques Brel at this time, with whom she toured. Clark is one of only a handful of artists to have received a song from Brel, a live recording of that song that charted in Canada.

In 1963, Clark wrote the soundtrack for the French crime film A Couteaux Tirés (Daggers Drawn), which was released in 1964, and had a cameo appearance as herself in the film. Although only a moderate success, it added a new dimension to her career added – that of the film composer. Other film music composed by her are Entre ciel et mer (1963), Rêves d’enfant (1964), La bande à Bebel (1966)[16] and Pétain (1989). Six themes from the last were released on the CD In Her Own Write in 2007.

She was the subject of This Is Your Life in February 1964 and twice more, in April 1975 and March 1996, becoming the only person to receive the television tribute three times.

International fame – the “downtown” era [ edit ]

By 1964, Clark’s career as a British musician was floundering. Composer/arranger Tony Hatch, who had supported her work for Vogue Records in France and Pye Records in the UK, flew to her in Paris with new song material he hoped would interest her, but she found none of it appealing . [17] Desperate, he played her a few chords of an incomplete song inspired by his recent first trip to New York City. Upon hearing the tune, Clark told him that if he could write lyrics that were as good as the tune, she would record the tune as her next single – “Downtown.”[18] Hatch then denied having originally offered “Downtown” to the Drifters.[17]

Neither Clark, who was performing in Canada when the song first received major airplay, nor Hatch realized the impact the song would have on their respective careers. Released in four different languages in late 1964, “Downtown” was a hit in the UK, France (both English and French versions), the Netherlands, Germany, Australia and Italy, as well as Rhodesia, Japan and India as well. During a visit to London, Warner Bros. executive Joe Smith heard about it and acquired the rights for the United States.[20][21] “Downtown” debuted at number one on the American charts in January 1965 and has sold 3 million copies in the United States.

“Downtown” was the first of 15 consecutive Top 40 hits Clark made in the US, including “I Know a Place”, “My Love” (her second US number one hit), “A Sign of the Times, I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love, That’s My Song (from the Charles Chaplin film The Hong Kong Countess), and Don’t Sleep in the Subway.[10] The American recording industry honored her with Grammy Awards for Best Rock & Roll Recording of 1964 for “Downtown” and for Best Contemporary (R&R) Vocal Performance of 1965 – Female for “I Know a Place”. In 2004, her recording of “Downtown” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Clark’s recording successes have resulted in frequent appearances on American variety programs hosted by Ed Sullivan and Dean Martin, guest recording on Hullabaloo, Shindig!, The Kraft Music Hall and The Hollywood Palace, and inclusion on musical specials such as The Best on Record and Rodgers and Hart today.

In 1968, NBC-TV invited Clark to host her own special in the US, and in doing so she unwittingly made television history. While singing a duet of “On the Path of Glory,” an anti-war song she had composed, with guest Harry Belafonte, she grabbed his arm, to the dismay of a representative from Chrysler Corporation (the show’s sponsor). who feared the moment would draw racial backlash from Southern viewers. When he insisted they replace another take, with Clark and Belafonte standing far apart, Clark and the show’s executive producer — her husband Wolff — declined, destroyed all of the song’s other takes, and delivered the finished program to NBC with the touch intact.[23][24] The Chrysler rep was terminated, and the program aired on April 8, 1968, four days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., to huge ratings, critical acclaim[25] and a Primetime Emmy nomination. It has been misdescribed as the first physical contact between a black man and a white woman on American television,[26] forgetting many previous cases, including Frankie Lymon, who met a white girl on Alan Freed’s live ABC TV show “The Big” Danced the Beat” July 19, 1957 [citation needed] Nancy Sinatra kisses Sammy Davis Jr. in her 1967 TV special “Movin’ with Nancy”[27] and Louis Armstrong shakes hands with “What’s My Line? ‘ Panelists Dorothy Kilgallen and Arlene Francis in 1953.[28] On September 22, 2008, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1968 Belafonte broadcast, Clark and Wolff appeared at the Paley Center for Media in Manhattan to discuss the broadcast and its impact after a screening of the program.

Clark later hosted two more specials; The Petula Clark Show, which aired on both the NBC and CBC networks in early 1970,[30] and one for ABC that served as a pilot for a proposed weekly series. She starred in the BBC television series This Is Petula Clark which aired from mid-1966 to early 1968.

Clark rekindled her film career in the late 1960s, starring in two major musical films. She starred opposite Fred Astaire in Finian’s Rainbow (1968) and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for her performance. The following year she was cast with Peter O’Toole in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), a musical adaptation of the classic James Hilton novella.

In 1968 she brought French composer/arranger Michel Colombier to the United States to work as her musical director, introducing him to Alpert’s pop symphony Wings and a number of American film soundtracks. Richard Carpenter credited her with bringing Alpert to the attention of his sister Karen and him when they performed at a premiere party for Goodbye, Mr. Chips in 1969.

Clark recalled that she and Karen Carpenter went to visit Elvis Presley in Las Vegas and afterwards “he flirted with both of us and said, ‘Wow, the two biggest girl pop stars in my dressing room. That is really good’. … He didn’t exactly have us, but he had one hell of a try. I won’t talk about it anymore.”[31]

Clark was one of the backing singers of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band Give Peace a Chance. Clark performed in Montreal in June 1969 and was harassed by audiences for her bilingual performance. Clark went to Lennon for advice as he and his wife Yoko Ono were staying at the city’s Queen Elizabeth Hotel during their Bed-ins for Peace protests. Clark subsequently ended up recording Give Peace a Chance.[32]

By the early 1970s, Clark had chart singles on both sides of the Atlantic with “Melody Man” (1970), “The Song of My Life” (1971), “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” (1972), “The Wedding Song (There Is Love)” (1972) and “Loving Arms” (1974). In Canada, “Je Voudrais Qu’il Soit Malheureux” was a big hit.

Clark continued touring throughout the 1970s, performing at clubs across the United States and Europe. During this period, Clark also appeared in print and radio commercials for The Coca-Cola Corporation, television commercials for Plymouth automobiles, print and television commercials for Burlington Industries, television and print commercials for Chrysler Sunbeam, and print commercials for Sanderson Wallpaper in the UK.[citation necessary]

In the mid-1970s, Clark downplayed her career to devote more time to her family. On 31 December 1976 she performed her hit song “Downtown” on BBC1’s A Jubilee of Music, celebrating British pop music for Queen Elizabeth II’s upcoming Silver Jubilee. She also presented the television series The Sound of Petula (1972–74) and had in the 1970s numerous guest appearances on variety, comedy and game show television programs.

In 1980 Clark had her last film appearance in the British production Never Never Land. Her last television appearance was in the 1981 French miniseries Sans Famille (An Orphan’s Tale).

A 1981 single, “Natural Love”, reached #66 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in early 1982 and #20 on the US Country Singles chart.

As Clark moved away from film and television, she returned to the stage. In 1954 she had acted in a stage production of The Constant Nymph but, at the urging of her children, she did not return to legitimate theater until 1981, starring as Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music in London’s West End. Facing positive reviews and what was then the biggest ticket sale in British theater history, Clark – dubbed “the best Maria ever” by Maria von Trapp herself – extended its initial six-month run to 13 to meet the huge ticket demand. 33] and received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. In 1983 she took on the title role in George Bernard Shaw’s Candida. Her later stage credits include Someone Like You in 1989 and 1990, for which she composed the score; Blood Brothers, with which she made her Broadway debut at the Music Box Theater in 1993, followed by a tour of America; and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, which appeared in both West End and American touring productions from 1995 to 2000, per the BBC. [citation needed] With more than 2,500 performances, she has played the role more times than any other actress. [citation required]

A new disco remix of “Downtown” called “Downtown ’88” was released in 1988 and registered Clark’s first success on the UK Singles Chart since 1972, reaching the UK Top 10 in December 1988. A live vocal performance of this version was given on the BBC show Top of the Pops. Clark recorded new material regularly throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and released “Oxygen” in 1992, a single produced by Andy Richards and written by Nik Kershaw.

In 1998 Clark was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.[35] In 2012, Clark was appointed Commander des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France by the French Minister for Culture. (www.petulaclark.net)

In both 1998 and 2002 Clark toured extensively throughout the UK. In 2000, she presented a self-penned one-woman show at Montreal’s St. Denis Theater highlighting her life and career, to critical and public acclaim. A concert performance in 2003 at the Olympia in Paris was released in both DVD and CD format. In 2004 she toured Australia and New Zealand, performing at the Hilton in Atlantic City, New Jersey; the Hummingbird Center in Toronto, Ontario; Humphrey’s in San Diego; and the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut; and attended a multiperformer tribute to the late Peggy Lee at the Hollywood Bowl. [citation needed] After another UK concert tour in spring 2005, after which she contributed to the BBC’s V45 television concert in Trafalgar Square in May singing “A Nightingale sang am Berkeley Square”, she performed with Andy for several months Williams at his Moon River Theater in Branson, Missouri and returned for another engagement in the fall of 2006 after scattered concert dates across North America ]

In November 2006, Clark was the subject of a BBC Four documentary entitled Petula Clark: Blue Lady and performed with Michael Ball and Tony Hatch in a concert at the Theater Royal, Drury Lane, which was broadcast by BBC Radio the following December the same year she performed for the first time in Iceland. Duets, a compilation featuring Dusty Springfield, Peggy Lee, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and the Everly Brothers, among others, was released in February 2007; and Solitude and Sunshine, a studio recording of new material by composer Rod McKuen, was released in July of the same year following the musical British invasion of the United States in the 1960s, followed by a series of concert dates in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand . [citation needed] She is heard on the soundtrack of the 2007 independent film Downtown: A Street Tale. Une Baladine (in English, a wandering minstrel), an authorized pictorial biography by Françoise Piazza, was published in France and Switzerland in October 2007, and the following month Clark promoted it in bookstores and at book fairs.

In 2005 Clark took part in the BBC Wales program Coming Home about her Welsh family history.

Clark received the 2007 Film and TV Music Award for Best Use of a Song in a Television Show for “Downtown” on the ABC series Lost. In the summer of 2008 she completed a concert tour of England and Wales, followed by concerts in Switzerland and the Philippines. At the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 14, 2008, Clark performed “Goin’ to Chicago Blues” with Paolo Nutini in celebration of Quincy Jones’ 75th birthday.

In 2010, Clark became President of the Hastings Musical Festival;[36] she has toured Australia, New Zealand and Quebec to packed houses and appeared on the show Vivement Dimanche on French television, where she promised to return to Paris in the New Year. Their triple album Une Baladine contained 10 new tracks and a new studio recording: “SOS Mozart”, an author collaboration of Gilbert Bécaud and Pierre Delanoë. [citation needed] Both their album set and the new recording of “SOS Mozart” were produced by David Hadzis at Arthanor Productions Studio in Geneva and charted in the French charts. She was Patron of the Dinard British Film Festival 2011.[37]

In early 2011, the Lark Street Business Improvement District in a portion of downtown Albany, New York needed a name for its logo/mascot, a graphic image of a blue lark. An Internet poll was held and the winner was Petula Lark, clearly a reference to the singer of the adopted New York City metropolitan anthem, “Downtown.”[38]

In February 2012, Clark completed her first New York City exhibition since 1975.[42] Their show featured a parody of “Downtown,” an idea that came from their musical director, Grant Sturiale.[42] After the end of her season, which had to be extended due to ticket demand, she returned to Paris to promote her new album before flying to Australia for a tour.[43]

She appeared as a guest on Radio 4’s The Reunion in August 2012. In January 2013, she released a new album entitled Lost in You. The album contains new music and some covers. She remade her famous “Downtown” and performed a cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”. She also performed a new song called “Cut Copy Me”, [44] which spent 14 weeks in the Belgian charts. The album entered the UK National Albums Chart at number 24 on Sunday 3 March 2013. Two of the songs, “Crazy” and “Downtown”, were performed on Jools Holland’s New Year’s “Hootenanny” on January 1, 2013 along with her 1966 number six hit “I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love”.

On June 20, 2015, she performed “Downtown” with the Midtown Men at the Beacon Theater in New York City.

Clark released a new English language album, From Now On, in October 2016 and completed a UK tour to promote it.

Clark made a cameo appearance in the 2017 London Heathrow Airport Christmas TV commercial, accompanied by her song “I Couldn’t Live without Your Love”.

An English language album, Living for Today, was released on November 10, 2017. Clark began a tour of the United States in November 2017. It was their first US tour in five decades.[48]

In March 2019 it was announced that she was returning to the West End stage in London for the first time in 20 years, appearing as The Bird Woman in the forthcoming revival of Mary Poppins.

On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Petula Clark among hundreds of artists whose material was destroyed in the 2008 Universal Fire.[51]

In March 2020, the United Music Foundation released A Valentine’s Day at the Royal Albert Hall, a collector’s edition featuring the complete recording of their legendary concert at the Royal Albert Hall on February 14, 1974.[52]

In 1955, Clark became romantically involved with Joe “Mr Piano” Henderson. Speculation that the couple wanted to get married became widespread. With the increasing shine of the public spotlight and Clark’s rising fame – her career in France was just beginning – Henderson, who reportedly didn’t want to end up as “Mr. Petula Clark”, decided to end the relationship. Their professional relationship lasted for a number of years, culminating in the BBC radio series Pet and Mr Piano, the last time they worked together, [54] although they remained friendly. In 1962 he wrote a ballad about their breakup entitled “There’s Nothing More To Say” for Clark’s LP In Other Words. In 1967, in Las Vegas, she witnessed the wedding of her boyfriend, French singer Charles Aznavour, alongside Sammy Davis, Jr.

In October 1957, Clark was invited to perform at the Olympia in Paris for Europe N°1’s live radio show Musicorama. The next day, she was invited to the office of Léon Cabat, chairman of Vogue Records, to talk about recording in French and working in France. There she met her future husband, the publicist Claude Wolff, to whom she felt an immediate attraction, and when told he would work with her if she recorded in French, she agreed.[14] They have two daughters and a son.[31] As of 2012, Clark has lived in Geneva, Switzerland for most of the year; sie hat auch ein Ferienchalet in den französischen Alpen, wo sie gerne Ski fährt, und ein pied-à-terre im Londoner Stadtteil Chelsea.[42]
