After that, Saturday Night Live saw an upheaval in 1980, when all the cast, writers and major producers left the show, Joe joined the cast. The new cast was not well-liked by viewers or critics, with the exceptions of Piscopo and Eddie Murphy, who were the only cast members invited back in the next season when Dick Ebersol took over. Joe left the show in 1984 and that year he appeared in the film Johnny Dangerously and Billy Joel’s music video Keeping the Faith and published the book The Piscopo Tapes. In 1985 he released the comedy album New Jersey and in 1986 appeared in the film Wise Guys: The Next Generation and graced the cover of Muscle & Fitness magazine thanks to his interest in bodybuilding.

Joe married Nancy Jones, a former producer of Wheel of Fortune, on December 1, 1973 and they welcomed son Joey before divorcing in 1988. Piscopo then married Joey’s former nanny, Kimberly Driscoll, on April 4, 1997, and they had three children, Olivia, Michael and Alexandra, before their 2006 divorce. He also has a daughter named Charley-Rae with his assistant and girlfriend Jessica Nasoff. The couple appeared on Celebrity Wife Swap in 2014, swapping Nasoff with Brady Bunch star’s assistant, Barry Williams.
In 2016, New Jersey resident Jennifer LaRocca admitted to stealing money from Joe, saying that her husband was hired to pay bills for Piscopo and that she used the money to write checks for her expenses to issue. Saturday Night Live[edit]
In the summer of 1980, Piscopo was hired as a contract player for Saturday Night Live. The show had gone through a major upheaval with all the writers, major producers and cast members leaving that spring. The brand new cast was bombarded with critics and fans, with the exception of Piscopo and Eddie Murphy; As such, they were the only two cast members retained when Dick Ebersol took over the show the following spring. With the success of SNL, Piscopo moved to the affluent borough of Alpine, New Jersey.[4]
Piscopo was best known for his impressions of celebrities like Frank Sinatra. Piscopo rewrote the lyrics for a Sinatra sketch with the help of Sinatra lyricist Sammy Cahn and recalled that “by the grace of God, the old man loved it.”[6] Piscopo occasionally had a spot on the weekend update segment as a bombastic sports commentator who would ask a series of questions, usually followed by a loud “Who cares?” Piscopo and Robin Duke also played Doug and Wendy Whiner.
Post-Saturday Night Live career [ edit ]
Piscopo left Saturday Night Live at the end of the 1983–1984 season. In 1984, he starred with Michael Keaton in the mixed-review film Johnny Dangerously, including a special for HBO, and wrote a book for Pocket Books called The Piscopo Tapes. An album, New Jersey, for Columbia Records followed in 1985[7] and an ABC special called The Joe Piscopo New Jersey Special in May 1986.[8] In 1987, Piscopo was featured on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ #1 rock single “Jammin’ Me.”
In the mid to late 1980s, Piscopo developed an interest in bodybuilding. He was first introduced to the sport while filming Bruce Springsteen on SNL.[9] He appeared on the cover of Muscle & Fitness magazine in April 1988 and June 1990. In the latter issue he said: “Some people in Hollywood think I’m crazy about this bodybuilding stuff too tall. They’ll hurt your career.” But they don’t understand the high that comes from training, from challenge, and from personal victory.”[10]
Since January 2014, he has hosted the radio show Piscopo in the Morning, Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on AM 970 The Answer (WNYM) in New York City.[11] and as of December 13, 2020, Piscopo also began hosting the Ramsey Mazda Sunday Nights with Sinatra on 770 AM WABC in New York and WABC’s sister station 107.1 FM WLIR in Hampton Bays.
Piscopo considered running for governor of New Jersey as an independent in 2017, in part due to the political success of Donald Trump, for whom he campaigned in 2016. He was encouraged by a number of political figures, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.[13] However, in May 2017, he decided not to run.[14] Piscopo was active in a band and performed at a political rally hosted by businessman Mike Lindell in May 2021.[15]
