The stunning 2008 disappearance of a doting mother left the nearby Paris, Tennessee area with more inquiries than addresses. Many years later, a private examiner reviewed the case to address these concerns. Part of Investigation Discovery’s “Mysteries, Lies and Private Eyes: The Watcher and the Horseman” looks at how Amy Gadd followed up on the anticipated new leads and spoke to the people contained within. With that in mind, if you’re interested in this case, we’ll take care of you.

What happened to Rachel Conger? Rachel Lyn Conger was born in October 1977. The adoring 30-year-old had a teenage baby girl, Amber, and was married to Paul Conger at the time of the episode. She was last seen on the morning of March 13, 2008 with her significant other in his vehicle somewhere in Paris. Around 11:30 p.m., Amber understood that her mother was nowhere to be found in the house and was eventually reported missing.

Specialists discovered that one of Rachel’s colleagues called her phone around 9:30 am on March 13 just for Paul to answer. The person accepted that Paul seemed disturbed and was unable to speak to Rachel at the time. Almost an hour after the fact, Paul was seen alone in his home. Tragically, Rachel was never seen or heard from at any point in the future. Despite an extensive pursuit, the specialists had not found her or her remaining parts.

Who Killed Rachel Conger? By the time Rachel was reported missing, there was a lot of doubt as to whether Paul had anything to do with his significant other’s evaporation. The couple had separated about two months before the incent, and Rachel moved out. Despite this, they attempted to reunite. Likewise, Amber expressed that Paul was harmful and had previously hit her mother. According to the show, Paul’s brother Richard also agreed that Paul had an attitude.

After Paul was seen at his home that morning, he too disappeared. About three days after the crime, distressed relatives who were looking for the couple saw Paul in a field near the house. He died from an apparently self-inflicted gun battle caused by a shotgun. A day earlier, on March 15, specialists observed Paul’s pickup truck near the house. It contained Rachel’s wallet, phone and prescription that she used.

The Specialists accepted that Paul had killed Rachel and then committed suice and defended it with a self-destruct by murder. On the show, Amy returned to some clues that highlighted where Rachel’s remaining parts might have been found, but they ended up being dead closures. However, Golden remains hopeful of finding out what happened to her mother. The specialists have expressed that the case remains open regardless of the cold.

Who is Rachel Conger Found or Missing Is She Dead or Alive

The strange death of a wonderful parent in 2008 stunned the small town in France, Tennessee with far more lingering questions. A forensic analyst investigated the matter a few years ago to allay those fears. Mysteries, Lying & Personal Eye Sockets: The Watchers as well as the Horsemen, half of Investigations Entertainment’s Mysteries, Lying & Personal Eyes: The Watchers and the Highwayman, delves into how Amy Gadd investigated new leads and the Concerned interviewed.

Rachel Conger was born in October 1977. The loving 17-year-old was engaged to Paul Conger just moments after the tragedy and had a young child, Amber. The woman was also seen with her husband in his car somewhere in Paris on the evening of March 13, 2008. Amber learned at 11:30 p.m. that her mother was nowhere to be found in the apartment, and she was subsequently taken hostage. Investigators found that around 9:30 a.m. on March 13, one of Rachel’s colleagues called her cell phone, but Paul answered. The person thought Paul was angry and didn’t need to talk to Rachel right now. Paul was seen at his home about a few hours later. Rachel was not seen or spoken to afterwards. After a full examination, officers could not locate her body.

When Rachel left, there was a lot of speculation that Paul had a lot to do with her disappearance. The marriage had broken up about 2 months before the incident, and Leah had been dating. They still try to reconcile. Amber reportedly claimed that Paul was violent and that this had previously affected his mother. Paul’s brother Richard agreed that according to the episode, Paul had a fit of anger. Paul mysteriously disappeared after being spotted in his apartment that morning. Shortly thereafter, alerted relatives looking for the couple spotted Paul at a nearby park. He died of a severed artery that appeared to be ego. Investigators found Paul’s van outside the home the week before, on March 15. Rachel’s purse, phone, and prescription were all there.

According to police, Paul murdered Rachel and then shot him, making it a deadly scenario. Amy followed various clues leading to Rachel’s possible whereabouts in only one broadcast, and they all turned out to be blanks. Amber, on the other hand, is positive when she finds out what happened to her mother. Despite the fact that the investigation has gone cold, police have maintained that the investigation is ongoing.

Rachel Conger – The mHERder Podcast

INTRODUCTION

A note to listeners – this podcast covers adult topics and is not intended for young listeners.

As of 2011, there were over 85,000 missing persons in the United States.

Tennessee had 98 domestic violence homicides in 2018.

On today’s episode, I share the mysterious disappearance of 30-year-old wife and mother Rachel Conger.

I’m Brooke Wilkerson.

This is the mHERder podcast.

And this is YOUR story.

AROUND

Rachel Conger was a beautiful 30-year-old mother and best friend to her 12-year-old daughter. She was also a loving dog mom to her two dachshunds, Mia and Lynnia.

Rachel and Amber’s father did not date, and she had been married to a man named Paul Conger for over 10 years. Paul was a 50-year-old bulldozer operator who owned his own business. He had retired from the Tennessee National Guard after 20 years of service and also had 3 daughters from a previous relationship. Rachel, Paul, and Amber lived in Paris, Tennessee — a city of about 10,000 people, a 70-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower, and the proud host of the “World’s Biggest Fish Fry.”

At just 13, Rachel’s daughter, Amber, had witnessed years of abuse of her mother at the hands of her stepfather, Paul Conger. She later wrote about seeing Paul choke, hit, punch and even hold a gun to her mother’s head. Amber said that Paul threatened to kill both Amber and her mother many times. But Rachel had finally broken up with Paul and was working to get back on track with her life with her daughter.

THE DISAPPEARANCE

In 2009, Amber wrote about the days leading up to her mother’s disappearance on the Bring Rachel Home blog page.

About a month before Rachel’s disappearance, Rachel and Paul had a huge argument which ended with Paul threatening to kill Amber, Rachel and their dogs in front of Amber’s friends before kicking them out. Rachel gathered her belongings and took them to a friend’s before settling into a home in Como, Tennessee. Amber wrote that they were doing so well when Paul decided he wanted Rachel back.

On March 12, 2008, Amber was staying at a friend’s house when she saw her mother coming home in a friend’s truck she had borrowed to pick up a couch. Her car was parked in Clarksville. Amber saw that Paul was in the truck with Rachel and said that she was careful to scowl and be rude to him. After they dumped the couch, Rachel told Amber that she had to go to Paul’s house to get the rest of her stuff while Amber went to church. But when Amber left the church that evening, she had trouble getting a hold of her mother on the phone. Finally, at around 9:30 p.m., Paul answered Rachel’s phone. Amber asked about her mom, but Paul asked if he could “borrow” her for the night. Amber said no – which enraged him – and insisted on talking to her. When he finally got Rachel on the phone, Amber said she sounded like she was crying. Amber said “I want you to come home mom” and Rachel said she would pick them up.

But actually, when Rachel came to pick Amber up, Paul was in the truck with her. Amber wasn’t happy and continued to glare at him. When they got back to Rachel’s house Paul went for a shower and at that moment Rachel told Amber what was going on and said if she didn’t do what Paul wanted her to do he would burn down her house down with them in there.

Rachel was so scared of Paul and what he might do that she even told Amber that if she heard anything at night to crawl out of her bedroom window, run to her friend, and call 911. Rachel told Amber, “I will always love you no matter what.”

When Amber woke up on March 13, Rachel was gone. She wrote that her bed was unmade, the dishes in the sink, and the back door open—all unusual things. At first, Amber didn’t think much of her mother not being home, but after repeated unsuccessful attempts to call her, she became concerned. She started calling all of Rachel’s friends, but no one else had seen her either. So she ended up calling Paul but he didn’t answer.

Later that day, after continuing to call Rachel with no answer, Amber finally filed a missing persons report for Paul and Rachel and a bulletin was issued for them and the truck they were driving.

A surveillance camera at a local gas station later showed the truck driving by at 8:07 a.m. A cell phone tower picked up a call at 9:30 a.m. that came through on Rachel’s phone from a friend. Paul took that call and Rahel’s friend said that he seemed upset and they couldn’t speak to Rahel. At 10:15 a.m., Paul was seen alone at his home — about 20 miles from where that call had taken place.

On Friday, police found the truck they were last seen in and it contained all of Rachel’s belongings – her phone, purse, etc. Two days later, on March 16, 2008, police found Paul’s body in an isolated one Wooded area about 500 meters from where his truck had been. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Despite extensive searches of the area, authorities did not find Rachel’s body, and to this day it has never been found.

In May 2010, Rachel’s sister Lori published a blog post on the Bring Rachel Home Blog stating:

“Sometimes I don’t think everyone realizes what a wonderful person Rachel was. Sometimes I feel like if they did, they really, really understood, then surely they would do more to find her. For Amber and Louise to know she was found. That people would stop spreading rumors that she was alive and choose to run away. Then I realize that all those people who spent hours coordinating searches and looking for Rachel took care of it or they wouldn’t have been out there looking. Sometimes in extreme heat, sometimes in cold weather. But they were here. I’ll be honest here. I got angry when she wasn’t found.

Before anyone gets upset with me, please read on. I got angry because my niece’s mother, an incredibly sweet woman who would do anything for someone in need, was taken away from her. She was taken from her daughter by a man so selfish in his obsessive “love” that if he couldn’t have her, no one could have her. I got mad because I felt like if she wasn’t found, he outsmarted everyone and ended up “winning” at his sick and twisted game.

Not much has happened on the search front. I guess we had to step down, regroup, and see what we can do to keep looking for Rachel. To be honest, I don’t know what we can do to rekindle interest in the case. I ask for all opinions! It seems like the traditional media doesn’t want to hear about a missing woman’s case when no suspect can be found because the suspect killed himself. I might be wrong. But I want someone to tell me what to do.”

During the summer of 2008, Amber hosted a car wash, bake sale, garage sale, and benefit concert to raise money to find Rachel. It rose to over $6000 and was able to hire 2 search teams. She wrote on the blog page, “I know she could never leave me because we were best friends and she loved me more than anything. I lost my mother when I was 13 and have not been the same since. I need closure and answers. I haven’t received it yet, but I hope that one day I will.”

After Rachel’s disappearance, Amber lived with her grandmother, but in 2009 she moved to Georgia with her father for a fresh start.

CONCLUSION

In 2013, hope was renewed when a Maryland college professor and her students joined the search for Rachel. Rachel’s daughter, then 18, said: “I appreciate everything all these people are doing. I’m glad you’re coming in and looking again. I hope this opens up new possibilities in the case and I hope that they will be able to find some answers.” The students at Towson chose Rachel’s case because they felt her case was not like that received as much attention as it should have, saying, “Everyone deserves a solution. This includes Rachel and her family. We have a feeling that even though all that time has passed, Rachel is still to be found. She will only be found if she is searched for.”

Dana Kollmannn taught forensics at Towson University and brought 38 students with backgrounds in forensics and criminal justice to help with the search. They teamed up with the Southeast Canine Search and Rescue, Jodi Powers Search and Rescue, Smyrna Rescue and many volunteers. Despite finding “possible evidence” related to the case, which was submitted to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Rachel is still missing.

In April 2020, The Vanished Podcast covered Rachel’s story, which led to the Discovery ID show “Still a Mystery” picking up the story for an episode. To find out more about when this show airs, follow the Bring Rachel Home Facebook page.

Donations to the search effort can be made at Holley Credit Union in Paris, TN, where a special account has been set up.

Amber has spent years trying to find her mother and said: “My mother was the most amazing woman ever and the best friend I’ve ever had and that drives me every day. I know that one day she will be found because I will never stop searching for my mother, my best friend. I could tell her anything and she wouldn’t judge me – just help and be understanding.”

Police believe Rachel was the victim of a murder suicide. When she went missing, she was 30 years old, 5’2 and 128 pounds. She was last seen in black sweatpants and a burgundy tank top with pink lettering. She is a white woman with blond hair and green eyes, with a nose ring and a tongue ring, and several tattoos. If you have any information regarding her disappearance, please contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Department at 731-642-1672.

There is a quote from a book by Lundy Bancroft called Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men that I want to leave with you:

“Your abusive partner has no problem with his anger; He has a problem with your anger. One of the basic human rights he takes away from you is the right to be angry with him. No matter how badly he treats you, he believes your voice shouldn’t be raised and your blood shouldn’t boil. The privilege of anger is reserved for him alone. If your anger springs out of you — as every abused woman will from time to time — he’ll probably try to stuff it back down your throat as soon as possible. Then he uses your anger against you to prove what an irrational person you are. Abuse can make you feel like you’re in a straitjacket. You may develop physical or emotional responses to swallowing your anger, such as depression, nightmares, emotional numbness, or problems eating and sleeping, which your partner can use as an excuse to further belittle you or make you feel crazy.”
