Raelyn Nelson Follows In Papa Willie’s Footsteps – Gainesville Downtown

Willie Nelson’s granddaughter performs with her band at Thursday night’s High Dive, but her musical style is more rock ‘n’ roll than country.

(Note: We apologize if some language in this article is offensive to readers.)

It’s difficult to interview Raelyn Nelson about her music without veering off to her grandfather. This has to happen when you’re the eldest granddaughter of the legendary Willie Nelson.

And she more than agrees with that. In fact, she can’t praise her “Papa Willie” enough.

“I’m so proud of him,” Raelyn said. “I think he is the most like Jesus that ever walked the earth after Jesus.”

High praise indeed!

Raelyn Nelson, 33, knows her fledgling music career is fueled by encouragement from her 85-year-old grandfather – as well as a fanbase who embraces the Willie Nelson family brand.

On Thursday night, the four-piece Raelyn Nelson Band headlines a show at High Dive, 210 SW 2nd Ave., which also includes Gainesville’s own Company Man and Carey Matthews. Doors open at 8pm. and the music starts at 9 o’clock. Tickets are $8 in advance at eventbrite.com and Hear Again Records or $10 at the box office.

As much as Raelyn Nelson respects her beloved grandfather and his music, her band doesn’t necessarily walk that narrow country road.

If Loretta Lynn and Joan Jett had a baby, it would be Raelyn Nelson.”

– Raelyn Nelson

“It’s more like country/garage rock,” she said in a recent interview with gainesvilledowntown.com. “I’m basically the country in the band. I write country tunes and my band is just a bunch of rockers and we arrange it that way.”

Jonathan Bright is Nelson’s guitarist and musical partner. They write songs together and “he rocks it with me”. In other words, the music is rock ‘n’ roll with Nelson’s country tunes singing over it.

“My favorite description that people have said is Loretta Lynn with Cheap Trick behind her,” Nelson said. “It’s kind of similar, but it’s definitely a bit more direct than Loretta.

“She’s one of my biggest inspirations,” adding, “If Loretta Lynn and Joan Jett had a baby, it would be Raelyn Nelson.”

During their High Dive performance, the Raelyn Nelson Band will play a little bit of everything, including their new song Mama Cry. (“I wrote it with my sister Scout when we were on vacation with our mom and Scout made her cry.”) Another new song is “Nothing On.” (“It’s about being stuck at home with nothing to wear when the person you love is out with someone else,” she said.)

The band will also play their own songs like “Do You,” “Moon Song,” “Mason Jar,” and “Sweetwater,” but Nelson is also happy to play a few Papa Willie covers, a Loretta Lynn cover, and — um spice it up a little bit – some punk rock covers.

“We like to cover all the bases and make sure everyone has a good time,” she said.

The Gainesville performance marks the start of a three-day “mini tour” of Florida for the Raelyn Nelson Band. They also have shows on Fridays in Pensacola and Saturdays in Santa Rosa Beach. Nelson said the band intentionally book gigs every other weekend because her ex-husband then has custody of their three children.

You see, Raelyn Nelson is a working mom with 11-year-old twins and an 8-year-old daughter.

“We divorced six years ago, but we’re good friends now,” she said. “The kids stay with him every other weekend. He helps me homeschool them. He’s very supportive.”

She said it’s entirely possible that Willie Nelson’s entertainment genes would be passed on to his great-grandchildren. Raelyn said one of her boys is quick to pick up tunes, while the other is already a good drummer and is teaching himself piano. Your daughter is more of an actress/comedian.

“She says she wants to sing, but she doesn’t do it very often and I think maybe that’s because I do,” Nelson said. “She’s definitely into making everyone around her pay attention to her and making her laugh. She says, ‘Look at me!'”

Raelyn Nelson was a teenager when she realized she wanted to make music. At 14 she plucked up the courage to ask her famous grandfather for one of his guitars. Instead, he bought her a brand new Martin. Although her instrument of choice on stage is now the ukulele, Nelson still writes all of her songs on this prized Martin.

On January 1, 2016, Nelson feared the Martin guitar had caught fire when her home in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, burned to the ground in the middle of the night. She tried to keep her children and sister safe. They didn’t have time to save their belongings.

“The Martin sat there with all the other instruments, and all the other instruments were ruined except that one,” Nelson said. “It was like something had wrapped a protective veil around it when you believe in something like that. It came through without a scratch. The luthier who inspected it said it didn’t even appear to have gone through a fire.”

She added, “The guitar my grandpa gave me when I was 14 is probably the most prized possession I own aside from my kids.”

Raelyn Nelson is the daughter of Willie Nelson’s eldest son, the late Billy Nelson. Unfortunately, he took his own life in 1991 at the age of 33. Raelyn was only 7 years old when her father died, but she still clings to the memories of him.

“We were close,” she said. “One of the first memories I have is of my dad and grandpa teaching me to sing ‘Jingle Bells.'” They also taught me ‘On the Road Again’ and ‘All My Ex’s Live in Texas.’ when I was about three or four years old. There is a picture of me in front of a microphone with my father.”

Raelyn Nelson said she was in her dad’s arms when she first realized her dad Willie was different from everyone else.

“We were at a show and it was after the show and Papa Willie was trying to get back on the bus and there was a lot of people rushing him,” she said. “I could feel everyone and I was scared. My father held me tight and tight because it felt dangerous. I was like, ‘I want to go to Papa Willie! Where is he?’ And my father said, ‘He’s working,’ but in a very serious tone. And I remember thinking, ‘This isn’t normal. That’s funny.'”

Nowadays, Raelyn Nelson is responsible for keeping die-hard fans updated about her famous grandfather. She works from home and responds to emails fans send to his website willienelson.com.

She was busier than usual last week after Willie Nelson suffered a gastrointestinal illness and walked offstage before a concert in Charlotte, N.C.

“He’s fine, he’s fine,” Raelyn Nelson said last week. “I just spoke to him and he said he’s feeling really good. He tried really hard to make the show and couldn’t pull it off. He really felt like shit.”

Willie Nelson has already rescheduled that concert date and has a busy touring schedule this summer, including Willie Nelson’s July 4th Picnic in Austin, Texas. The Raelyn Nelson Band is among the performers on the day.

“It’s muggy and everyone is making funny jokes about the heat,” she said. “It’s pathetically hot, but it’s so much fun.”

Her band has played to thousands at Farm-Aid and has supported Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts. They recently opened a packed Nashville venue for venerable punk rock band The Descendents, but Raelyn Nelson said she’s just as comfortable performing in rock clubs to small crowds.

“You have to do everything,” she said. “A normal show for us has maybe 60 to 100 people. It’s okay because you’re just building your craft and learning who you are as an artist. I started doing it since I stopped breastfeeding my kids, so I’ve been actively pursuing music every day for five, almost six years now.”

She doesn’t know exactly what to expect at Thursday’s High Dive. She has never performed in Gainesville.

“I know Tom Petty is from there. That’s it,” she said. “I’ve never been there. Not even passing through.”

The Raelyn Nelson Band consists of Nelson on ukulele, Bright on guitar, Preach Rutherford on bass and Angela Les Gregory on drums. Their sound is well received by both punk rock and country fans.

“You can associate us with a lot of different genres and we kind of adapt,” she said. “Most of the time people get it and get it and like it and have fun. It’s really a lot of energy. There are no sad songs. I like making people dance and have a good time. I want to leave a fun party flavor in everyone’s mouth.”

No matter what music the band plays, Nelson said she has her grandfather’s full support.

“He told me that he was really proud of me and that my father would be really proud of me,” she said. “He’s always telling me, ‘You’re on the move. Keep doing what you’re doing.’ And he won’t let me change what I do, you know? “If someone is trying to change what you’re doing, don’t let them do that!” He says, “Fuck off and do your own thing because what you do matters and you have to show the world that your band matters.” and you just stick to your guns.” Of course he would say that. He went through people trying to change him.”

Raelyn Nelson credits her grandfather with becoming an activist. She and her aunt Amy founded Willie’s Kids, a global initiative to promote and deliver humane education in the school curriculum through the WillieHughNiversity, an online university.

She said her grandfather passed on a great deal of wisdom to his children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren.

“The #1 rule in the family is, ‘Don’t be an asshole,'” she said. “The second rule is ‘don’t be an asshole’ and the third role is ‘don’t be a fucking asshole’. These have always been the rules of the Nelson family and I have passed them on to my children.

“If everyone just followed the three rules, I think the world would be a much better place.”

Raelyn Nelson, granddaughter of famed singer, brings ‘countrygarage rock’ to local stage

The Journal-News recently caught up with Raelyn Nelson in a phone interview to find out more about her and the band and what to expect when she plays Hamilton. Raelyn is also the host of several podcasts, including Music Is Funny.

Q: What things are you working on musically right now?

Raelyn Nelson: We’re releasing a new single called “Free”. I wrote it a few years ago after getting divorced and stuck at home with three young children, two dogs, five cats, two birds, a gerbil and a fish. I sat down and wrote a song called “Free” because I felt so free even though I was stuck at home with all these animals and children. So this song felt right to start the next section of singles. I’ll be releasing singles for a while and later putting them together on a CD after I’ve released a few. So we’re releasing this new single and working with a production team on a video that will be out soon.

Q: You are referred to as “Country/Garage Rock” on your website. Some of your band members have more of a rock background and your upbringing is more rooted in traditional country. How would you describe your sound?

A: Rolling Stone Country was the one that said, “Mixes old country and dirty garage rock.” They wrote that when we did our first single, “Brother.” We were also called “caffeinated country punk”. That was a different way they said it and I said I like that but it’s hard to label yourself and who you are. So I like to hear other people’s perspectives because to me I’m just me, but my biggest influences were Loretta Lynn, my grandfather (Willie Nelson) and Dolly (Parton) and all the old country darlings Kitty Wells and Tammy Wynette . When I was younger I was limited to Christian gospel music and old country. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I branched out into the top 40, pop, R&B and rock. When I was growing up, my mother simply listened to nothing but praise and worship music. My father died when I was little, so I started with praise and worship, old country and my grandpa’s music. So, I have a feeling this is me. And my band, they grew up with all that rock, like The Clash and The Ramones, and they introduced me to all that. Then when I heard some of these artists, I thought, I love The Runaways, I love Joan Jett. So later in life I came into contact with Joan and Chrissie Hynde and others. They really paved the way for us, but I just wasn’t exposed to them early on.

Q: What do you think is one of the greatest things you learned from your grandpa? And what is the most important piece of advice he gave you?

A: He always says: You’re on the move. Keep it up, keep writing. Do not stop. The only way you won’t make it is if you quit or you die, obviously before you make it, but just don’t quit.” The people making it don’t give up, and whatever it is, You will know, you will know what it is. He also taught us that horses are smarter than people. I try to think of lines he used to say, “A family that smokes together stays together.” He’s the coolest. It’s exactly how you want it. I think he is most like Jesus walking the earth after Jesus because he is there for everyone. (He stands up for) The underdogs. When someone talks bad about someone, they’re the first to come up and make us all feel stupid and tell us why we should love them. He just has a very Jesus-like quality about him. I remember a story, not the people who work for him now, but many years ago there were some people who worked for him who took off with the merch money and Paul his drummer came up with “Papa Willie ‘ on the bus, or in the van, or wherever they were and they said so-and-so ran away with all the money and I’ll go get them… He said I’ll go get them and we’ll get them our Money back, and “Papa Willie” said, “No, they probably just need it more than we do, let’s let them have it.” It’s the kind of things he did, just out of his actions, that taught me so much.

Q: Do you have other musical inspirations in your family?

A: My aunt Amy and my aunt Paula both write and sing music. They are amazing. My Uncle Lukas & Promise of the Real is great. It’s like a rock ‘n’ roll church. Then my Uncle Mike is like Psychedelic Rock. It’s cool. We all have a different sound and that’s really interesting because I’m sure it all just comes from our different influences growing up and of course Papa Willie. They’re all his kids, so I’m the only grandkid that plays music. These are all my father’s brothers and sisters. Paula doesn’t sing that much anymore, she does a radio show on SiriusXM, on the Willie’s Roadhouse and Outlaw Country channels. Amy has a band, Folk Uke, with Cathy Guthrie, daughter of Arlo Guthrie, and granddaughter of Woody Guthrie. Woody wrote “This Land is Your Land”. Micah Nelson also does his own solo thing. Try them all because we sure all have different sounds.

Q: What contribution would you hope to make musically and how do you think you make a difference?

A: I just want to be real, genuine and not fake. I am a mother. I’m a woman living in the year 2022. I’m 37 years old and identify as 27. I’m all about authenticity, serenity and comedy and laughter. That’s the impression I want to make on this world. Musically it’s actually the same thing, just laughter and happiness. I’m not a big fan of ballads… I just want to get everyone pumping.
