FRISCO, Texas-Dr. Dina Hijazi remembers her phone ringing in January.
Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory called. His message to the Dallas-based psychologist: Let’s get to work.
Gregory was serving an NFL indefinite suspension, his fourth suspension since 2015 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. But Gregory didn’t think substance abuse was at the root of his problems. Rather, he was seeking treatment for social anxiety disorder.
That fear had increased in the fall of 2019, when Gregory’s second child was born to a father who was suspended from his job and unable to support the family financially. Negative voices in his head reached an unbearable tenor.
“I was like, ‘If football isn’t here, then what am I?'” Gregory told USA TODAY Sports over the phone. “‘What am I going to do? What do I have to offer? Will my friends and family still see me like this? Am I a failure?’ There are a lot of things I had to figure out.”
Gregory first met Hijazi – whose areas of expertise include intimacy disorders, trauma and addiction – in 2018. When the 2019 NFL season began without Gregory on a roster, his insurance ended, making therapy sessions difficult to access, Gregory’s agent Peter Schaffer told USA TODAY Sports. Talks with the league allowed Gregory to resume consistent treatment with Hijazi in February. This therapy, Gregory says, has enabled him to use relaxation techniques and self-talk mantras when his anxiety begins to overwhelm him. Everyone helped him fight his impatience, from his application for reinstatement in March to his approval in September.
Gregory doesn’t see a time when he will completely erase the negative voices in his head. But Hijazi’s treatment has allowed the 2015 second-round draft pick to spring back into action with stronger and more effective rebuttals to allay his doubts, he says.
“I’m a lot more positive about myself,” Gregory said. “I never thought a year ago, two years ago, three years ago that I would feel this way about myself and be so okay with myself. I’m sure it’s hard for some people to understand… but I had a really bad view of myself and now I feel great, so I’m really proud of it.
“I couldn’t say that before.”

Counter negative thinking
Gregory often explains his self-perception as “not really okay with myself, be it physically, mentally or emotionally”. Hijazi’s 2018 assessment of Gregory was that of an impulsive, reactionary person caught up in a life so chaotic that it would be difficult to evoke joy naturally. Social situations, including chatting in the locker room with his teammates, further unsettled Gregory, who Hijazi says is an introvert. Drugs helped him cope. Violations of the league’s substance abuse policy resulted in 46 game suspensions between 2015 and 2019.
“It’s just not all an addiction issue,” Schaffer told USA TODAY Sports of his client. “He has social anxiety disorder and it makes him uncomfortable in certain situations. Historically, the two things he’d done to deal with it were one: smoke marijuana, or two just to avoid it.
“I told him: Avoidance is not the answer.”
Hijazi has led Gregory to alternative solutions. She begs him to question his beliefs and question whether his negative first impressions are conclusive or even entirely accurate. “Tell me why it’s good,” says Hijazi, when the results seem far from positive. Her goal: build a database of evidence to convince him that things might not be as bad as his fear makes them seem.
“We all have [negative thinking], it’s just so strong,” Hijazi told USA TODAY Sports. “Some people have those voices and sounds stronger, and he’s one of them.”
Because of this, Hijazi recommended a systemic shift, from Gregory circumcising his inner circle to more refined behaviors that calm his central nervous system. Meditation apps reinforce breathing and visualization techniques. He has developed a sense of emotional neutrality to assess challenges and seek solutions. Numbing or ignoring pain and discomfort is not the goal. Acknowledging each emotion and then moving towards solutions.
Hijazi reminds Gregory to imagine himself in a hula hoop and then ask: Which factors am I in control of and which are not? “I don’t let that bother me,” he says to himself. With an increased level of calm, he can think more clearly. In bi-weekly therapy sessions, Hijazi and Gregory act out potential upcoming stressors to anticipate the best responses.
“It’s like watching a trailer for a horror movie,” Hijazi said. “We all say, ‘Ahhh, no’. Then you say, ‘okay, let’s play it, go through it’ and it loses its power.
“We just keep pushing, pushing, pushing, until he gets to where he’s really looking now, ‘And I can handle that. If that happens, I can handle it.'”
With every step of his return to the Cowboys, Gregory learns he can.
“No Straight Path to Success”
Gregory’s request for reinstatement was not granted until September 4. So he spent the spring and summer working at an Amazon warehouse in the North Texas suburb of Lewisville. The 6-5, 242-pound defensive end took stock, helped load trucks and solved challenges to coordinate efficient package delivery routes.
He earned $15.50 an hour. And he was happy.
“I was grateful for what I had, despite the fact that I wasn’t playing football,” Gregory said. “I was happy that I was earning a living. I was glad that I woke up every day with some kind of purpose. I was glad that I was coming home to a family that loves and cares for me. I was really happy with myself and honestly content that I would continue and still be happy if I didn’t play again.
“There would be some pain in knowing I wouldn’t play football, but not necessarily the pain of failure.”
It is this ability to be happy that Hijazi, Schaffer, and Gregory see as key to keeping Gregory active in the league.
Jerry Jones and the Cowboys hope Gregory can stay available. After missing all of 2017 through suspension, Gregory accumulated six sacks, 25 tackles and 15 quarterback hits in 14 games in 2018. Last Sunday, in his first significant season of 2020, he recorded four tackles and a quarterback hit in 31 defensive snaps against the Eagles. Head coach Mike McCarthy praised his performance as “effective and impactful”.
Challenges still come daily. Gregory had to deal with frustration after his first qualifying game when the coaches gave him just six snaps. Ego in the locker room can still overwhelm Gregory, who wonders if teammates think he’s rude or distant if he abruptly exits a conversation. But as Hijazi describes it, the framework that supports Gregory is strong. His parents have moved to North Texas and Gregory is motivated to support his wife and two children. Per the League’s Substances of Abuse policy and program, he is subjected to up to 10 random drug tests per month. He usually speaks to Schaffer on a daily basis, who Gregory says holds him accountable and keeps him grounded. Gregory meets with Hijazi twice a week. Cowboys’ assistant head coach Rob Davis, meanwhile, amplifies Hijazi’s messages.
“[Davis] makes it a point almost every day to remind me to love myself, take care of myself, and see myself in a good light,” Gregory said, “because I like to tear myself down.”
With eight games remaining this season, Gregory is hoping to be part of the solution rather than a problem for the 2-6 Cowboys’ historically poor defense. He knows that success seemed within reach before, only that he failed another drug test. But he believes changing his beliefs and methodology has given him his strongest chance yet to manage his anxiety.
“Any person who knows my situation or knows people involved with my situation knows that this is not a straight line to success,” Gregory said. “You’re going to take some detours, you’re going to hiccup. I’ve had lots of them. I’ve been to the same place in the past where people wonder if I could stay on track or not.”
“My anxiety will be something I deal with on a daily basis. It’s not something I can really banish from my life.
“But I really feel like I have all the tools, all the resources and most importantly, the right mindset to stay available.”

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory took to social media on Wednesday that he is being treated unfairly by the NFL as he seeks to be reinstated after an indefinite suspension.
“I really miss playing football and being a player in the NFL,” Gregory wrote. “I’m doing whatever is asked of me and I’m in great shape physically, mentally and emotionally, but I’m being held back from furthering my career because of Covid and testing. I’ve been ready to play and test for months, but I’ve still had little to no help solving my reinstatement. I ask more questions than I get answers. It’s amazing that the powers that be passing the buck and using this pandemic can also prevent me from joining my team. Telling me to just sit there and wait in limbo for things I can’t control while doing everything right off the field is unfair and dead wrong!!!”
The NFL has been asked for comment on Gregory’s status.

Sources say Gregory applied for reinstatement in March. Last month, ESPN reported that his attempted return had not been denied, but he had not been cleared to return either, and sources said there was some optimism he would be allowed on the team in some way even if he couldn’t train .
