In November 2017, several women made allegations of sexual misconduct against Roy Moore, the Republican nominee in a special election for the US Senate in Alabama scheduled for the following month. He is a former Chief Justice of Alabama and District Attorney. Three women claimed he sexually assaulted them: two were minors at the time of these incidents, and Moore was in his 30s at the time.[1] Six other women recalled Moore being involved in romantic relationships or engaging in inappropriate or undesirable behavior with them between the ages of 14 and 22.
Moore has denied the allegations of sexual assault. On November 10, he admitted to knowing two of the women. Two weeks later, he said he “didn’t know any of these women” and “didn’t date any of these women” and “did not commit sexual misconduct with anyone.”[2]
Prominent Republicans including John McCain, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell called on Moore to pull out of the race after the allegations were reported.[3][4][5][6] By the time these allegations were reported, it was too late for Moore’s name to be removed from the ballot.[7]
However, President Donald Trump supported Moore and accepted his denials.[8][9] Alabama Republicans largely defended Moore. The Republican National Committee initially severed ties with Moore after the allegations were reported, but later restored funding for his campaign.[9]
Moore lost the Senate special election to Democratic nominee Doug Jones, in what was considered an uproar in the deeply Republican state.[12] In the year following the allegations, no criminal charges were filed against Moore and the issue lost the public limelight. One of the accusers, Leigh Corfman, filed a defamation lawsuit against Moore in January 2018 for saying her allegation was “false and malicious.” Moore filed a defamation lawsuit against Corfman and four others in April 2018.[13]
Allegations of sexual assault[edit]

On November 9, 2017, The Washington Post reported that Leigh Corfman claimed that Moore initiated a sexual encounter with her in 1979 when she was 14 and he was 32.[14] Corfman said Moore met her and her mother while they were at the county courthouse on business. At the time he was in his 30s and working as an assistant district attorney. He offered to sit in the hall with Corfman while her mother went into a courtroom to testify.[14] Corfman said that during this time he asked for her phone number, which she gave him. They later went on two dates: each time he picked her up from around the corner from her house and drove her to his house. The first time he “told her how pretty she was and kissed her.”[14] On a second date, Moore reportedly “took off her shirt and pants and took off his clothes…touched her over her bra and panties…and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear.” Corfman states that she wasn’t comfortable with the situation and asked Moore to take her home, which he did.[14]
Such sexual contact between Moore and a 14-year-old would have been a felony under Alabama law and punishable by up to 10 years in prison.[2][15] In a November 2017 interview with the Today Show, Corfman said she was proud that telling her story encouraged others to do the same.[16]
In January 2018, Corfman filed a defamation lawsuit against Moore and against his Senate campaign, saying their allegation was “false and malicious.”[17] In April 2018, Moore filed a defamation lawsuit against Corfman and four others.[13] In August 2021, an Alabama judge dismissed Corfman’s lawsuit against his Senate campaign, ruling that it failed to prove that Moore’s campaign staff or volunteers knowingly made false statements or acted in reckless disregard of the truth.[18] In February 2022, a jury found that neither side defamed the other.[19]
Beverly Young Nelson[edit]
Following the Washington Post’s report on Corfman, Beverly Young Nelson, who was performing with attorney Gloria Allred, said she received unwanted attention from Moore when she was 15. She also said that Moore sexually assaulted her in December 1977 or January 1978 when she was 16. Nelson said she accepted Moore’s offer of a car ride after work and trusted him “because he was the prosecutor.”[21] “Rather than pull into the street, he pulled over and parked his car between the dumpster and the back of the restaurant, where there were no lights.”[22] Then “Mr. Moore reached over and started groping me and put his hand on my chest. I was trying to get out and he reached out and locked (the door) and I yelled and told him to stop,” Nelson said. She said Moore put his hand on the back of her neck and tried to lift her head squeezing his crotch. According to Nelson, Moore eventually gave up and told her, “You’re just a kid, I’m the prosecutor; if you tell anyone about it, no one will believe you.”[21][24]
As evidence of her relationship with Moore, Nelson produced her high school yearbook, which contained an entry by Moore written about a week before the alleged attack.[25] Moore’s post reads, “I couldn’t say Merry Christmas to a cuter, more beautiful girl. Christmas 1977. Love, Roy Moore, D.A. In early December 2017, Nelson said that after this yearbook entry, she wrote the words “D.A. 12-22-77 Olde Hickory House”. Her attorney, Allred, said she had Moore’s signature authenticated by a handwriting expert.
Allred said she and Nelson would welcome an independent expert to review the message as long as it is accompanied by a US Senate hearing. She reiterated her request that Moore testify under oath about the incident.[29]
Nelson said she had no further contact with Moore after the incident. After her allegations were reported, Phillip Jauregui, an attorney associated with Moore’s campaign, denied Nelson’s allegations. He said Nelson was in touch with Moore in 1999 because he was the judge in their divorce case that year. But ThinkProgress and WHNT-TV in Huntsville reported that a different judge handled the initial issues in Nelson’s 1999 divorce case. The case was dismissed before a hearing before Moore later that year as Nelson and her husband attempted to reconcile. Moore’s only contact with the Nelson case was when his assistant, Delbra Adams, signed a motion to dismiss the case in August. According to ThinkProgress, there was no reason for Moore or Nelson to have met during the case. Nelson’s attorney in the 1999 case told WHNT that his review of his files found no record of a hearing before Moore.[30][31]
Moore’s defense attorneys said the Olde Hickory House restaurant was not operating in 1977; Moore’s wife posted such a denial on Facebook. However, contemporary records document it as existing in 1978, although they do not document that it actually existed as Olde Hickory House in 1977.[32]

On November 27, 2017, The Washington Post reported that a woman had contacted her claiming that Moore got her pregnant in 1992 when she was 15 and then performed an abortion. Post employees became suspicious after their fact-checking revealed some of their statements were contradictory or false. The woman was later spotted in the New York offices of Project Veritas, an organization that targets the mainstream news media and left-leaning groups and tries to trap them.[34] Also, Post reporters uncovered a GoFundMe page where someone with the same name as the woman said, “I took a job to work in the conservative media movement to expose the lies and fraud [sic] of the liberal MSM [34] The Post concluded and reported that the woman was part of a covert operation aimed at discrediting the newspaper by tricking it into publishing a false report.[34]

Becky Gray said she was 22 and working in the men’s department of Pizitz in Gadsden Mall in 1977 when Moore “started approaching her”. He repeatedly asked her out and she repeatedly turned down his dating offers. She said she “thought he was ‘old'”. Gray complained to her store manager after being disturbed by Moore’s advances.[37]

Phyllis Smith, who worked at Gadsden Mall, said she saw Moore talking to other young employees, although he did not approach her. She said, “I can remember him walking in and the whole mood changed with us girls … It would be like we were on guard … I remember sneaking in.” Smith warned others, ” to take care of this guy”.[37]
On November 13, The New Yorker quoted several local former police officers and mall employees as having heard that Roy Moore had been banned from Gadsden Mall in the early 1980s for attempting to pick up teenage girls. An Alabama woman said Moore was banned from the mall in the late 1970s after reporting to her manager that he was molesting her.[40] Local news station WBRC interviewed Barnes Boyle, a mall manager from 1981 to 1998, who said to his knowledge Moore was not banned.[41] The Moore campaign produced two other witnesses, a longtime mall employee and the operations manager who oversaw mall security, both of whom said he was never banned from the mall.
Faye Gray, a retired detective, said she heard that Moore had been banned from Gadsden Mall and that she and her colleagues were told to make sure “he didn’t hang out with the cheerleaders.”[43]

In November 2017, Gena Richardson, a registered Republican, reportedly said that Moore began stalking her when she was in high school, just before her 18th birthday.[37] Richardson stated that Moore approached her when she was working at Sears in the Gadsden Mall and asked for her phone number. According to Richardson, Moore called her at her high school to ask her out after she refused to give Moore her number. Richardson said that she eventually agreed to a date, and as she began to get out of his car, “he grabbed [her] and pulled [her] in and … kissed [her].” [37] Richardson said that the kiss scared her and described it as “a man’s kiss – like a really deep tongue. Like a very powerful tongue. It was a surprise.” Richardson’s account was corroborated by his classmate and Sears associate, Kayla McLaughlin.

Debbie Wesson Gibson has claimed that she and Moore were dating in the spring of 1981 when she was 17 and Moore was 34.[14] After Moore denied the relationship, she provided a signed postcard from Moore congratulating her on graduating from high school.
Gloria Thacker Deason says she dated then 32-year-old Moore for several months in 1979 when she was 18 after meeting him at Gadsden Mall. She said he provided bottles of Mateus rose wine and tropical cocktails during their dates, even though the legal drinking age in Alabama at the time was 19.[14]
Kelly Harrison Thorp claimed Moore asked her out in 1982 when she was 17. She declined. According to Thorp, Moore has told her that he dated young women her age “all the time”.[33] Thorp has said she knows Corfman and believes her allegations.[33]
Wendy Miller has said Moore asked her out on dates while she was working as a Santa’s helper at Gadsden Mall. Moore first asked her when she was 14 years old. Her mother wouldn’t allow them to date due to Moore’s age.[14]

A former colleague who worked with Moore in the Etowah County Attorney’s Office from 1982 to 1985 explained, “It was common knowledge that Roy was dating high school girls, everyone we knew thought it odd […] We asked us why someone his age would hang out at high school football games and at the mall.”[45][46] At least four current and former Etowah County residents have corroborated the colleague’s story. One said, “These stories have been going on for 30 years years in this town… No one could believe they hadn’t come out yet.” Another said,
“His liking and dating young girls was never a secret in Gadsden when we were all in high school… In our neighborhoods up by Noccalula Falls we heard it all the time. Even the people in the courthouse know it was a known secret… It’s just sad how these girls [who accused Moore] get hammered and called liars, especially Leigh [Corfman].”[39]
Retired detective Faye Gray, a 37-year veteran of Gadsden Police, said that in the 1980s she was told to watch out for Roy Moore because he was known to harass cheerleaders at local school sporting events.[43] The detective said it was mentioned frequently, both by the police and at Gadsden Courthouse, that Moore likes young girls. Gray said: “I didn’t realize until some time later that when they said he liked young girls, I just thought he liked young ladies, you know, maybe in their 20s. I had no idea, or we had no idea, that we were talking about 14-year-olds.”[43]

On November 10, Moore responded to the initial allegations by Corfman, Miller, Gibson and Deason in an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News Radio.[47] Calling those initial allegations “completely false, false and misleading,” Moore added, “The protection of young women is very important to me,” adding, “You understand that this was 40 years ago, and it’s since my return from the military.” I’ve dated a lot of young ladies.”[47]
When Hannity asked about Corfman, Moore said, “I never spoke to her, never had any contact with her … Allegations of sexual misconduct made against her are completely false. I think they’re politically motivated…I never knew Ms. [Corfman] or anything regarding the other girls.”[38][47] In the same interview, Moore addressed Gibson,
“I don’t remember speaking to a civics class [that Gibson was in] … I can’t remember the exact dates [between him and Gibson] because that’s 40 years ago, but I remember them when.” a good girl…I knew her as a friend. If we went out on dates, then that’s what we did. But I don’t remember that.”[47] Referring to Deason, Moore said, “As far as I can remember, she was 19 or older… I never provided alcohol, beer or intoxicating liquor to a minor… I seems to remember her as a good girl.”[47]
When Hannity asked if Moore had dated late teenage girls at age 32, Moore replied, “Not in general, no. If I did, you know I’m not going to deny anything, but I don’t remember anything like that. .. I don’t recall ever dating a girl without her mother’s permission.”[47] Instead, Moore attributed the allegations to “Democratic and perhaps even mainstream Republican efforts to undermine his Senate campaign.”[47] ]
After a new allegation by Nelson was reported, Moore said it was “absolutely false…I never did what she said. I don’t even know the woman. I don’t know anything about her.”[48]
Moore’s campaign issued a statement: “If you’re a Liberal and you hate Judge Moore, it seems he groped you… If you’re a Conservative and you love Judge Moore, you know these allegations are a political farce.” [49] Moore’s campaign also attacked the credibility of Moore’s accusers while he refused to answer questions.
On November 15, Moore published an open letter to Sean Hannity, in which he wrote, “I strongly deny the allegations made by Leigh Corfman and Beverly Nelson, did not date underage girls and have taken steps to pursue a civil action for defamation.” He also stressed how long ago the alleged incidents happened and expressed his belief that the Nelson Yearbook had been tampered with.[51][52]
On November 27, Moore conducted his first public campaign since the allegations surfaced. Commenting on the allegations, Moore said: “It’s just dirty politics. It is a sign of the immorality of our time.”[53]
Also on November 27 and November 29, Moore completely denied knowing any of his accusers and contradicted his November 10 statements of knowing Debbie Wesson Gibson and Gloria Thacker Deason. Moore stated, “I don’t know any of these women, have dated any of these women, and have not committed sexual misconduct with anyone.”[54]
A CBS News poll conducted a few weeks before the Alabama Senate election on December 12, 2017 found that “71 percent of Alabama Republicans say the allegations against Roy Moore are false”[55] and that the Democrats and the media are behind the charges. While the CBS poll showed that Moore was leading the election, a Washington Post poll showed that his opponent Doug Jones was in the lead and that voters “regard Jones as having a higher standard of moral conduct than Moore”.
Moore’s polygraph[edit]
In December 2017, Moore was subjected to a lie detector test which is not admissible as evidence in court. Moore claimed, “The results of the investigation reflect that I am not aware of and have never had sexual contact with any of these individuals.” In June 2019, Lexi Corfman’s attorneys produced an affidavit from Barry Colvert, an FBI interrogator with years of experience using polygraphs. Colvert stated that Moore’s polygraph results “indicate that Mr. Moore was deceptive in asking the relevant questions about Ms. Corfman” due to “consistently elevated electrodermal and cardiovascular responses to questions about Ms. Corfman”.[56]

News website Breitbart News consistently supported Moore’s campaign, attacking his critics and defending him against the allegations. Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow revealed after the election that he actually believes Corfman’s allegations to be true. He said a major factor in their support was a fear that the media would set a standard for sexual misconduct that President Donald Trump could not meet, “based on [sic] not any conviction or any admission of guilt, but based on [sic ] mere allegations.”[57]
Republican politicians and groups[ edit ]
US Congressman Paul Ryan was among Republican leaders who urged Moore to end his campaign.
Several Republican leaders have said Moore should resign if the allegations are true.[58] Prominent Republicans including John McCain and Mitt Romney urged Moore to drop out of the race after the allegations were reported.[3][4] U.S. Republican Senators Mike Lee, Steve Daines, Bill Cassidy and Ted Cruz withdrew their approval of Moore’s Senate nomination, and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman and Colorado Senator Cory Gardner challenged allegations that Moore should voted out be expelled from the Senate if he wins the election.[63] The National Republican Senatorial Committee ended its joint fundraising arrangement with Moore, although the Republican National Committee continued its arrangement with him. Days later, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that he believed the women who made the allegations and that Moore should “step aside.”[6] House Speaker Paul Ryan also urged Moore to abandon his campaign.[5]
The White House initially said that President Donald Trump “believes these allegations are very concerning” and that if they are true, Moore should drop out of the race.[65] Later, however, on November 21, Trump defended Moore, saying, “He totally denies it … He says it didn’t happen in the Senate race, Doug Jones, and commented, ‘We don’t need a Liberal person in the [Senate], a Democrats, Jones”. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “The President wants people in the House and Senate who support his agenda.” [68] When asked about Moore, Trump aide Kellyanne Conway implied that it was more important to vote for Moore, even if he pleaded guilty to the alleged sex crimes and said, “I’m telling you, we want the Senate vote to pass this tax bill.”[69]
On November 26, Trump continued to attack Jones via Twitter (“Jones would be a disaster!”) while declaring, “The [Democrats] Schumer/Pelosi must not win this race.”[70] On December 4, Trump fully endorsed Moore and renewed his support in a phone call with the candidate.[9]
Alabama Republicans, including Gov. Kay Ivey, have largely defended Moore against these allegations. One exception was Richard Shelby, Alabama’s senior US senator, who said the allegations against Moore were “credible,” adding, “Alabama deserves better.” He previously indicated that he acted on behalf of another Republican on his had written a postal vote.[71] No major Republican organization in the state gave up its support for Moore except for the Young Republican Federation of Alabama.[72]
Alabama state auditor Jim Zeigler defended Moore’s alleged biblical sex crime acts,[73] and Alabama state representative Ed Henry went so far as to advocate the prosecution of Moore’s accusers.[74]
Republican Marion County Chairman David Hall said the allegations are irrelevant, presumably because the alleged crimes happened “40 years ago.” Republican Bibb County Chairman Jerry Pow said he would support Roy Moore even if he committed a sex crime because he “didn’t vote for Doug” Jones, the Democratic nominee.[75] Covington County Republican Party leader William Blocker said he would still vote for Moore even if he committed a sex crime. However, Geneva County Chairman Riley Seibenhener said he would not support Moore if the allegations were true.[76]
By the time of the revelations, it was too late to remove Moore’s name from the ballot.[77] National Republican Party leaders considered various measures to force Moore out of the race in favor of another Republican candidate. One suggestion was to ask Governor Kay Ivey to postpone the special election until 2018.[78] Ivey said she has no plans to change the election date.[79] Ivey also said that she plans to vote for Moore because “we need to have a Republican in the United States Senate,” although she said she has “no reason to doubt any of the allegations against Moore.”[80]
Some Republicans, including Senators Lisa Murkowski and Orrin Hatch, raised the prospect of a campaign to elect Luther Strange.[81] However, Strange said it was “highly unlikely” that he would run a registered mail campaign.[82] Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell proposed Attorney General Jeff Sessions, formerly the Senate seat, as the written candidate. If Sessions had sought his old Senate seat, the post of US Attorney General would have become vacant.[83]

Religious community and leaders[ edit ]
After the reports of sexual misconduct, evangelical leader Franklin defended Graham Moore and attacked his critics, claiming they were “guilty of doing far worse than he was allegedly accused of,” a remark that drew criticism of Graham. [90] Alabama pastor Flip Benham defended Moore by saying that by the time Moore returned from military service, many eligible women were already married, so Moore romantically “looked after” the “purity of a young woman.”[90] 91] Many evangelical Christians continued to support Moore,[92][93] citing his positions against abortion and same-sex marriage.[94] A poll of likely evangelical voters in Alabama conducted immediately after the reports found that 37% of evangelicals polled said the allegations would make them more likely to vote for Moore, and 34% said the allegations made no difference; only 28% said the allegations made them less likely to vote for Moore.[95][96]
In contrast, other faith leaders have criticized Moore. Ed Stetzer, executive director of the Billy Graham Center for Evangelism, published an article in Christianity Today in November 2017 claiming that the allegations against Moore were “credible” and urging Moore to end his Senate campaign. Stetzer added, “If Moore continues to maintain his innocence, he should still resign so he can fight to clear his name, for the good of his state, for the success of his party, and to end the embarrassment he is causing evangelicals.” ‘”.[88] Russell Moore, President of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (the public political arm of the Southern Baptist Convention), “took to Twitter to denounce evangelicals who gave [Moore] a passport”.[97] Rev. William Barber II called [Roy] Moore’s Christian rhetoric “intolerable hypocrisy” and criticized religious leaders who maintained their support for him, writing: “This is not Christianity. Rather, it is extreme republican religionism, standing by partisan and regressive politics, no matter what. It’s not the gospel of Christ, it’s a gospel of greed.
