“Our Kraemer Middle Assistant Principal, Moises Plascencia, took his own life this morning in a private area on the school’s campus,” Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District superintendent Jim Elsasser wrote in a statement Monday.

In a separate statement, principal Michael Young said officials did not believe any staff or students were present at the time of his death, “nor was the incident witnessed by anyone.”
“Words will never express our true sadness at this loss,” Young continued. “While we may never understand or ever will understand why this happened, please know how much Mr. Plascencia cares about your students, their education and Kraemer Middle School as a whole.”

Placentia Police Captain Brian Perry told PEOPLE they arrived at the scene around 9am after receiving a call that a bathroom employee was unresponsive. Upon arrival, Plascencia was found dead with a gun nearby, Perry says.
