Annie Hanson and Lincoln became ???????? and Lincoln’s wife found out. Supposedly she was fired or it was over. Annie told him, “Let me fire and I’ll file a wrongful termination lawsuit and it’ll still come out.” It would make sense as to why the “personal non-football tag” happened during the Baylor game and why LR has been so distant around the building for the past few weeks. He planned to take the LSU job to get out of town, then the USC job became real and he took it instead to keep his recruiting class. Annie, one of the most active people at OU on social media, hasn’t tweeted, liked, or posted on Instagram in a week.

Replacing Bob Stoops — three years ago on Sunday — may have been a thankless, if not impossible, task.
Stoops won 190 games as head coach at Oklahoma from 1999 to 2016, more than anyone else, including the program’s seventh national championship in just his sophomore year. Stoops dominated the Big 12 Conference with nine championships in 16 years. And he paved his way to a place in the College Football Hall of Fame without much controversy, without much trouble with the NCAA.
Lincoln Riley had no qualms about being the guy to follow The Guy. In fact, Riley says he had a pretty good instruction manual when he started his first head coaching job on June 7, 2017.
“First of all, if someone said it was Bob Stoops 2.0, I’d take that as the ultimate compliment,” Riley said last week.

After a brief stint as a walk-on quarterback at Texas Tech, Riley worked for Mike Leach and quickly made a name for himself as an offensive magician, first as a tech assistant, then as a coordinator at East Carolina, where he worked under Leach’s former aide Ruffin McNeill .
Stoops had endured a tough few years — in recruiting, in the staff room, in public relations and on the field — before bringing on Riley as his offensive coordinator for the 2015 season. He had to fire longtime friend Jay Norvell and national title-winning quarterback Josh Heupel, but the program needed a new direction.
After Riley stabilized the offense and recruiting increased, Stoops decided Oklahoma was in a good place. It was time.
His sudden resignation in the middle of the summer shocked almost everyone. But those who follow Stoops closely were less surprised.
Several insiders said Stoops – scandal-free for most of his tenure – had grown tired of defending his character after a year that starred Joe Mixon, Frank Shannon and Dorial Green-Beckham. Stoops also found the prospect of watching his twin sons their senior year of high school football appealing. And of course there was the family history of heart disease that claimed his father, Ron Stoops, in 1988 at the age of 54.
“Hell, I thought about retiring maybe five years ago, eventually,” Stoops said in 2017.
Stoops was particularly motivated by the idea of Riley taking another job as head coach somewhere else. Stoops knew Riley was ready for the big chair. He might as well be sitting in it in Oklahoma.
“I think all of that goes into your decision,” Stoops said. “There isn’t one thing or part that pushes you over the edge. It’s really the combination of all of those things.”

Riley acknowledges the path that was charted out for him – before he ever joined Norman and during his two years as Stoops’ offensive coordinator.
“There’s certainly a lot of parts of our program that, you’re exactly right, have been adopted in some form or way (as Bob has been directing his program for a long time,” Riley said. “There was obviously a lot that was true. And he certainly is by everyone single person, if not the biggest, he’s right there at #2 in terms of influence on me, along with Donnie Duncan, so a lot of things we’ve done come from Bob.”
The story likes Lincoln Riley. He has won more games in his first three years (36) than any coach since Walter Camp (41) and George Woodruff (39). Incidentally, these two started their careers before Oklahoma had a program — before Oklahoma actually had a state, in 1890 and 1894, respectively.
Riley, 36, is the embodiment of today’s next-generation coach – young, successful, secure, but in touch with players at a different level. The changes within the Oklahoma program have been subtle, but not always.
“There were a few things that changed,” Riley said last week. “I think part of that is down to me (and) the personality of the staff. Some of it is the times and the rules and what you have to do has changed and we have tried to adapt. I think some of it is. I think you would certainly have felt some of these changes in recruitment, on social media, or around the world, whether I was the head coach or Bob was the head coach.
Even in his three years as head coach, Riley had to evolve. He was between a rock and a hard place, knowing it was time to step away from Mike Stoops as defensive coordinator, but also committed to Bob Stoops for hiring Riley and pushing his promotion.
Loyalty is one of the strongest and most enduring human virtues, but in the business of great college football, loyalty can also be something of an albatross.
Three years later, Riley has shown that hiring and firing could be one of his strengths. He started this whole head coaching thing by bringing in his old mentor McNeill.
Loyalty.
Now, nearing the start of his fourth season, Riley has replaced six members of Stoops’ coaching staff and even hired his own strength coach.
“I think the beginning for me was so different, especially with the staff part, so much staff in place,” he said. “I think the first year the only people I hired were Ruffin (McNeill) and Annie (Hanson). I think the majority of our staff was in place.
“I think as we’ve had personnel changes over the years it gives you an opportunity to put together a whole vision of what you really believe in, which is more in line with traditional head coaching jobs. Mine was obviously different. So I think that probably some of the biggest changes over the years have been finding general direction and making some key changes that were really important to our program and having a choice there.
The first major change was the firing of Jerry Schmidt, the military strength coach who was Stoops’ first hire when he got the job in December 1998. Schmidt joined Texas A&M, and Riley hired former Texas, Tennessee and Texas Tech strength coach Bennie Wylie to coordinate player strength and conditioning off-season.
But without question, Riley’s biggest change was firing Mike Stoops and replacing him with Alex Grinch three months later. In just one season, Grinch improved Oklahoma’s overall defense from 114th to 38th.
Of course, Riley’s trademark continues to be insult.
Riley’s offenses have exceeded 500 yards in 49 of the 68 games in which he has been counted as plays since 2015, a staggering 72 percent of the time. Next on that list: Clemson at 55 percent, according to OU research.
“It’s one of those things,” ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said last season, “that in 50 years someone will be making documentaries where they talk about their offense.”

That Riley has reached this level with three different quarterbacks with three different skills is no less remarkable. Two (Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray) won the Heisman Trophy and became the No. 1 overall draft pick, the third (Jalen Hurts) was a Heisman runner-up and entered the second round of the NFL Draft.
“I would say the biggest thing is that he fits the pattern around the guy and not the guy around the pattern,” ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky said last season. “Not a lot of coaches do that because a lot of coaches have a scheme and [say] ‘I’ve seen this scheme work and you have to conform to that scheme.’
“So he did a good job of understanding what the player is good at and making sure he cultivates offense around that and then understanding what the player isn’t good at, what his weakness is and then not him to that to suspend.”
Riley said, “We’ve been able to surround those quarterbacks with good players every year. We could give them weapons, we could give them offensive lines and we could equip them to play well. So it was a combination of all those things.”
But Riley is about more than coaching quarterbacks, calling smart plays, and making big numbers. As a head coach — one of college football’s biggest moneymakers as CEO — Riley has taken a more holistic approach to coaching that belies his youth.
“He has a great deal of wisdom and compassion for him as a man,” said linebacker Kenneth Murray.
“He’s one of the most open-hearted guys I know,” receiver CeeDee Lamb said.
Riley’s performance as head coach this offseason has been as impressive as anything he’s done from September through December. His level of leadership is unusual – certainly for coaches of his age and level of experience.
While some coaches – older, more experienced coaches – have explicitly advocated returning to football and letting players train in a controlled campus environment, Riley has shown patience and caution during the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, OU will not return to volunteer offseason work until July 1 at the earliest.
And just over the past week, as the nation erupted in racial tension and violence, Riley’s leadership has inspired his players and others.
“I definitely stand by my players,” Riley said. “…And not just because they’re my players. It’s a fundamental belief. I was very fortunate to grow up in a household that taught me that no one is better than another because of the color of their skin. I’ve been fortunate to have been in sports team locker rooms my entire life, so I’m lucky to have grown up with it and to have grown up in a household where that was emphasized.
“Honestly, when the players ask me to do something (with them in protest), that’s great. But that’s something I would do whether I was a football coach or not. It’s just a true core belief that I have. Of course I stand by my players. I have an opportunity to help make this world a better place, no matter how big or small the opportunity.
“I don’t think anything would be off the table as far as a protest or a call for equality and for a better world that they need right now. As long as it is done tastefully, it is well thought out, it is done peacefully, nothing is off the table for me personally.”
Kenneth Murray explained last season that Riley’s ability to connect emotionally with his players is not the norm. Riley is somehow capable of thinking like a teenager.
“I think that makes him a really good coach, a really good head coach,” Murray said. “He’s able to see things on a level that maybe a 21-year-old kid (can’t) … and he can point us in the right direction, and he’s also able to be that compassionate person, who is there for us is a coach. You know, really show some compassion and really care about his players. I think that’s what makes him such a great coach.”
Riley said last fall that openness and honesty are important and shouldn’t be a two-way street.
“I think our guys know where we are on most things,” Riley said. “We’re pretty open with our players. On every topic. No problem admitting when we’re wrong. No problem letting them know where they stand. what we think So I think there’s a level of respect from both sides, and… we want to be on the same page. We always want to be able to communicate with our boys. That has always been our approach and I think that is exactly who we are.”

Look at the scenery around Riley. Since his sudden promotion in 2017, half of the Big 12’s 10 programs have changed coaches. He turns 37 in October, but in the Big 12 only Gary Patterson, Mike Gundy and Matt Campbell (by a year) have coached more games.
Riley earned $275,000 in his senior year in East Carolina. Stoops hired him to call $500,000 games. After a year, Riley got a raise to $900,000 and then jumped to $1.3 million — Stoop’s first million-dollar coordinator.
When he replaced Stoops, Riley’s salary doubled to $3.1 million. That went up to $4.8 million, then $5 million, and in January 2019 he received a raise and extension that takes him to $6 million. His contract also includes clauses for a $200,000 salary increase in February and a $700,000 residency bonus in June.
It’s a meteoric rise. But Riley is widely regarded as one of college football’s finest coaches. Last month, CBS Sports ranked Riley third nationally behind Nick Saban of Alabama and Dabo Swinney of Clemson, who have combined eight of the last 17 national championship wins.
In Sooner Nation’s eyes, there’s one more step Riley can take – winning that elusive national title. For all his accolades, all his offensive genius, all his Heisman statues, Riley is 3-0 in the college football playoffs as head coach, and two of those losses weren’t close.
Riley knows the Oklahoma standard. That’s why he took the job, why he took the role, and why he may not have gone into the NFL yet.
Riley attempted to summarize how he’s progressed in the three years since David Boren, Joe Castiglione and Bob Stoops handed him the reins of the Sooner Schooner.
“I don’t know,” he said. “I’d say I guess personally it doesn’t surprise me that much anymore. I’ve been trying to become a better communicator with our boys. I tried to be – I think you have to challenge yourself every year to find ways to get better. I still feel very challenged every day. I still feel challenged every year.
“This year was obviously a bit different – there is no shortage of that at the moment. But yes, I felt like I had grown in many areas, but as I’ve said many times, I still feel like I still have a long way to go.”
