Rene Rancourt wonders many things about his career.
What if that hard check never landed during a hockey scrimmage in Lewiston, Maine? What if he had been pushed into combat in Vietnam like many of his Army buddies were?
What if Kate Smith hadn’t been sick on October 21, 1975? What if John Kiley, music director of Boston Garden and Fenway Park, dn’t have his number?
“Wow. If those things hadn’t happened, who knows where my life would have taken me?” sa Rancourt, who has performed the national anthem before Boston Bruins home games for the past 42 years.
“God, I’m a very lucky guy,” he sa. “I had no ea where my voice would take me. I get emotional thinking about it. What a re it was. What a re.”
Rancourt’s “re” – performing for the Bruins and their fans, performing, singing at weddings – is soon ending.
At the beginning of the year he announced his resignation. The Bruins play their final home games of the regular season this weekend, meaning two final regular-season performances of the anthem follow followed by Rancourt’s signature fist pumps for the TD Garden fans.
He will sing in the playoffs as long as the Bruins are at home.
Then he will break up.
At 77, Rancourt is out of energy.
“It’s time,” sa Rancourt, who lives in Natick with his wife Maria. “I love what I do. I love performing. I love singing the anthem for the Bruins.

Rancourt’s parents both moved from the Montreal area to a French Canadian part of Lewiston. There they met and married.

“Everyone played hockey in Lewiston, on ponds or rinks, anywhere there was ice,” he sa.
Rancourt was an av amateur singer. But he wanted to play pro hockey.
That was until he was 15 years old. Children got bigger, faster, stronger. The right games, he sa, let’s start.
“I remember being on the boards and this k checking me out. I was a little skinny k,” he sa. “It was at that moment that I realized that I’m not a hockey player.
“Basically, that moment was the beginning of my singing career,” he sa.
Rancourt sang in high school and performed in a theater on the Bates College campus in Lewiston. Egged on by a teacher – he had no plans for a singing career – Rancourt applied to Boston University and received a partial music scholarship.
He left school in his junior year to pursue a career in opera. That ended abruptly in 1963 when he was drafted into the US Army.
“I started out as a gunner for 105 howitzers at Fort Hill, Oklahoma,” he sa. “You should have seen me fire a cannon. It was a joke.”
His vocal chops were a different story.
He won a singing competition and was assigned to a traveling entertainment show for GIs.
“Honestly, it saved me from going to Vietnam,” Rancourt sa. “I was never a fighter. I’m a singer.”

About a dozen years later, the Red Sox played Cincinnati in the World Series. The Reds led the series, three games to two.
Kate Smith, the beloved alto, lined up to sing the national anthem before Dwight Evans, Fred Lynn, Carlton Fisk and the rest of the Sox took the field that night.
She called in sick.
Rancourt got a call from Kiley, the Red Sox’s organist and music director. Though he’s been singing professionally for nearly a decade, Rancourt sa he was stunned when Kiley asked him to step in.
“I lived about four blocks from the park,” he sa. “I was a last minute option. Of course I sa yes.
“Imagine me singing the anthem before what is probably the greatest baseball game of all time,” he sa.
Kiley was so impressed that almost a year later he offered Rancourt the opportunity to sing the anthem before the Bruins’ games.
He’s been there ever since.
When he stopped
Rancourt’s fondest memory of performing the anthem before a Bruins game?
Easy. It was April 17, 2013, two days after the Boston Marathon bombing.
“There was talk of the game being canceled,” he sa. “I got a call at home that the game was on and they wanted to get the audience singing. It was a nice ea.
“When I was vocalizing and preparing for the game, I would get emotional every time I started singing,” he sa. “Then I dn’t know what to expect. I had to figure out when was the right time to stop singing.”
Not singing seems easier than singing. But Rancourt was more than nervous.
“When I went on the ice, I was scared and insecure,” he sa. “I had never done that before. I would be the center of attention. Anything I d wrong would be magnified. It was the toughest performance I’ve ever prepared for.”
The PA announcer asked fans to sing along to the anthem. Rancourt began, delivering it to the crowd during the second line after singing, “What so proudly..”
Then he almost magically became the conductor just by mumbling the words.
“Once the fans started, it was like we were rehearsing,” he sa. “All my fears are gone. I started waving and directing my hands. Thank goodness I had a background in conducting as I had a wedding orchestra for 30 years. … It was so special.”
The Bruins have attempted to recreate that moment a few times, with fans taking over the anthem, to no avail.
“It just wasn’t the same,” he sa. “That night was magical. I really think the fans needed a release and then they were able to do it.
“I’ve been singing at The Garden for so many years, for so many incredible moments and games,” sa Rancourt. “Like the day Ray Bourque changed his jersey number (when the Bruins retired Phil Espositos No. 7). Or when paralyzed player Normand Leveille came back into the garden and was helped on the ice.
“But that night after the marathon tragedy is the focus,” he sa. “There has been an event like this before.”

Rancourt could talk about his “re” for hours. In the coming days he probably will.
Not only is he retiring as an anthem singer for the Bruins, he pretty much retires from performing—at weddings, birthdays, and other performances where he sings the anthem. He was a semi-regular at the Merrimack College men’s hockey games.
“The real reason is preparation,” Rancourt sa, sounding like an athlete towards the end. “You just don’t show up and sing the anthem. It takes a lot of practice, a lot of work on the voice.
“I’m very proud of what I do and not being at my best would be unacceptable,” he sa. “It can be very lonely when you’re fighting.”
Rancourt and his wife had no children, so there will be no grandchildren or anything like that.
“We just want to relax and enjoy life, travel a bit,” he sa.
And he doesn’t give up gigs entirely. He will offer his services as a “wedding crasher” where he will show up and sing the anthem for the guests.
As his final appearance at the Garden draws near – along with his final ‘Ober the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave’ – Rancourt continues to ponder the hymn, which is drawn from Francis Scott Key’s poetic account of the British attack on Baltimore in 1814
“It’s literally stayed with me my whole life. What a great song,” he sa. “My goal has always been to focus on the words of the anthem. I dn’t make any changes like a lot of people do.”
Rancourt describes himself as a ham.
“I like to fool around and do things my way,” he sa. “But with the anthem it was different. I sang it as it was composed. That deserves the utmost respect.”

“That’s me. That’s the ham in me,” he sa. “I hope people enjoyed it. I had the time of my life.”

“That means I have to get the tuxedo dry cleaned,” he says, laughing.

The tradition of Stanley Cup playoff hockey in Boston resumed Thursday night at TD Garden when the Maple Leafs won Game 1 against the Bruins.
But Rancourt’s absence made a big difference. It had been more than 40 years since anyone other than Rancourt had opened the playoffs in Boston with the American and Canadian national anthems.
Several cast members emerged from auditions the Bruins held last summer to sing the anthem during the season. But Todd Angilly, whose main duties at the Garden are bartending, has become a mainstay and fan favorite and he got the call from the Bruins to sing ahead of Games 1 and 2.
“I’m still speechless about it,” he said. “It’s kind of interesting when you think of the big picture: They go from (Rene) who’s been doing it for 40 years and now they’re going to give it to the bartender on the fifth floor. I’m up to the task and I like to think they made the right decision. With that comes a great responsibility and an equally great honor. Hopefully I can fill the role and give her the respect and honor she deserves.”

Rancourt admitted that throughout his career it had bothered him when others sang the anthem in his place for one reason or another. Now that he’s outside-in, he was impressed with the cast, especially Angilly.
“They’re doing a great job,” Rancourt said. “I wish you good luck. If I had heard such competition a few years ago, it would have killed me. My competition juices would have flowed. Now I can truly and honestly say, “Good luck” and “You’re doing a great job and keep up the good work.” I really mean it.”
Angilly is a day probation officer and also a former cook at Fenway Park. He has also sung the anthems for the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots. 43-year-old Lynnfield, Massachusetts resident and native of Warwick, R.I. attended the New England Conservatory of Music.
Rancourt had his iconic fist pump when he finished singing and you knew how excited he was about the number of pumps he gave fans, but Angilly understandably has his own routine. When he’s finished singing, he points to each end of the garden – one to organist Ron Poster and the other to the bartenders on Level 5.
“Over the years that I’ve sung and acted, you always pay tribute to your companion, especially as a singer,” Angilly explained. “Everyone wanted to know if I was going to do the fist pump and I would say, ‘No, I’m not doing that because that was Rene’s business.’ It’s a matter of respect and I don’t want to do it because it was his business . So I’m just trying to show Ron some respect and thanks. It is an honor to work with him.”
The bartenders on Level 5 at TD Garden want t-shirts that say “Yes, Todd’s singing” because the fans keep asking if Angilly sings the anthem.
“They (other bartenders) are so supportive, like, ‘He’s one of us. He’s our guy down there,'” Angilly explained. “Well, I like to point to them. When I change (before the anthem) I come back through the bar and they all cheer me on as I leave and they get really hot. And I can hear them when I get on the ice.”
One of the anthem singer’s jobs is to get fans and players excited about the game. Rancourt had the magic touch and Angilly follows his predecessor well.
“I pay attention to that,” said Bruins defenseman Torey Krug. “I don’t know about other guys but I’m pretty excited, especially with the difference between the regular season and a playoff anthem; it’s a little bit different.”
Believe it or not, every player has their game day routine for the anthem too. Some players use those few minutes to get excited and recharge the fans’ energy, while others use the time to take a deep breath, focus and try to calm those nerves.
“Rene obviously did a great job here for years and the crowd loved him, but Todd was great too,” Krug said. “Either way, Boston fans will be cheering for you, and that’s what’s exciting.”
After the anthem, a lift awaits Angilly, taking him back to the fifth floor, where he can resume his duties as a beerman. Fans will always ask him to sing and he has taken many photos this season.
Most of the fans at level five are season ticket holders or have a suite, so they know Angilly. However, every now and then someone will tell Angilly that he looks just like the guy who sang the anthem. He and the other bartenders are having fun with it.
“I also convinced people it was my twin brother,” Angilly said. “We’re a pretty tight group up there because we have a lot of regulars, so I’ve developed a pretty good relationship with a lot of my regulars. It’s just the coolest thing. They are so supportive and I don’t know who is prouder sometimes. It was a beautiful tradition that we started and hopefully we can continue it.”
He has also been asked to sing at fundraisers, funerals and weddings. He’s becoming a fixture in New England, as is Rancourt, whom Angilly never met.
“I’d like to meet him,” Angilly said.

Rene Rancourt (born August 4, 1939)[1][2] is an American singer best known for performing the national anthem(s) at home games of the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League for 42 years . Rancourt’s last combined appearance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “O Canada” was on April 25, 2018 before Game 7 of the Bruins’ Eastern Conference first round playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs “The Star-Spangled Banner.” alone took place on May 4, 2018, when Boston hosted Game 4 of the Eastern Conference second round against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Rancourt was born in Lewiston, Maine, to Léon Rancourt and Bernadette Guenette, French-Canadian from Quebec.
Career [edit]
Rancourt first began singing the anthem in Boston at Fenway Park. He took part in an opera singing audition on the radio and was heard by John Kiley, longtime organist at both Fenway and Boston Garden. Rancourt sang before Game 6 of the 1975 World Series when singer Kate Smith canceled her performance. Rancourt’s original ambition had been to be an opera singer, and the strength of his trained voice overcame the old Guard’s acoustic deficiencies.[6] In 1976, he began singing regularly for Boston Bruins games.
Rancourt’s signature fist pump at the end of the anthem was modeled after the “Stump Pump” by former Bruin Randy Burridge, whom Rancourt admired. Rancourt also saluted men and women who have served in the armed forces at the end of the anthem, although it was originally inspired by an older Rancourt fan. Rancourt played the anthems before the Bruins games and sang at auto races, charity events, and nursing homes in and around New England. He was uncontracted with the Bruins, saying, “I’ve never had a contract; I’ve always just turned up and been associated with the Bruins.”
Rancourt served in the US Army in the 1960s where after winning a singing competition he was assigned to a touring GI show which kept him from being sent to Vietnam.
On January 17, 2018, the Bruins announced that Rancourt would be retiring at the end of the 2017–18 season. He was honored during the Bruins’ last regular season game against the Florida Panthers on April 8. His last playoff game was Game 4 of the Eastern Conference second round against the Tampa Bay Lightning on May 4, 2018. Rancourt retired after the Lightning eliminated the Bruins in five games.
