Ronald Ames Guidry (born August 28, 1950), nicknamed “Louisiana Lightning” and “Gator”[1] is an American former baseball pitcher who played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees played. Guidry was also the Yankees’ pitching coach from 2006-2007.
Guidry’s major league career began in 1975. In 1977 and 1978 he was a member of the Yankees’ World Series-winning teams, both against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He won the 1978 American League Cy Young Award, winning 25 games and losing only 3. He also won five Gold Glove Awards and appeared in four All-Star games. Guidry served as the Yankees captain from 1986; He retired from baseball in 1989. In 2003, the Yankees retired Guidry’s uniform number (49) and dedicated a plaque to him in Monument Park.
Early life[edit]
Guidry was born in Lafayette, Louisiana. He attended and threw for the University of Southwestern Louisiana. He was a combined 12-5 with a 2.03 earned running average (ERA) and 137 strikeouts as a two-year letterman with the Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team in 1969 and 1970.
Player career[ edit ]
Guidry was a third-round pick (67th overall) by the New York Yankees in the 1971 MLB draft. After four seasons in the minor leagues, he briefly played in the major leagues in the 1975 and 1976 seasons.[4] He was almost sent to the Baltimore Orioles in a trade-deadline blockbuster on June 15, 1976, but the Yankees wouldn’t let down any more left-handed pitchers beyond the three (Scott McGregor, Tippy Martinez and Rudy May) they were already in involved in the deal.[5] The following year, he was scheduled to be brought to Toronto for Bill Singer in a transaction approved by the Yankees but rejected by Blue Jays president Peter Bavasi.
In 1977, Guidry started the season as a backup pitcher but was moved to the Yankees’ starting rotation. On April 30, he was called upon to do a lame start in place of Mike Torrez, who was recently acquired in a trade from the athletics and had not joined the team in time for his first start. In the longest game Guidry can remember since his Eastern League days in 1974, he helped the Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 3-0.[7] Guidry finished the season with a 16-7 record. His emergence as a starter after his previous seasons in the bullpen made him one of the Yankees’ biggest surprises in 1977.[9] He helped lead the Yankees to a World Series.[10]
In 1978, Guidry announced a career year that was described by a Yankees pitcher as his best season ever. On June 17, he set a Yankee record with 18 batters against the California Angels. Guidry’s 18-strikeout performance is usually cited as the launch pad of the Yankee Stadium tradition of fans standing and clapping the opposing batsman for a two-strike strikeout. For the season, Guidry went 25-3 and set the all-time mark for a pitcher’s winning percentage with at least twenty wins. He led the league with a 1.74 ERA, .893 win percentage, nine shutouts and 248 strikeouts. Guidry’s success in 1978 was due in large part to his mastery of the slider.[1] His 248 strikeouts set a Yankees team record for most strikeouts notched by a pitcher in a single season.
Guidry’s 25th regular-season win in 1978 was his most significant, as it came in the Yankees’ 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox in a one-game playoff at Fenway Park in Boston to become the American League East Division winner determine. The game is best known for Bucky Dent’s seventh inning, a three-run home run that gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Later that month, the Yankees again won the World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Guidry won the American League’s 1978 Cy Young Award unanimously. He also came second in American League Most Valuable Player voting for slugger Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox. In addition, Guidry was named The Sporting News’ AL Pitcher and Major League Player of the Year.[14]
Guidry was named to the American League All-Star Team in 1978, 1979, 1982, and 1983.[18] Known as an excellent outfield player, Guidry won a Gold Glove every year from 1982 to 1986. In 1984, Guidry won the Roberto Clemente Award,[20] presented annually to the major league player who “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement, and the individual’s contribution to his or her team.”[21]
On August 7, 1984, Guidry hit three batters (Carlton Fisk, Tom Paciorek, and Greg Luzinski) in nine pitches in the ninth inning of a 7–0 win over the Chicago White Sox. Guidry became the eighth American League pitcher and the 20th pitcher in major league history to hit a clean inning. In 1985 he led the American League with 22 wins.[23] Guidry and Willie Randolph were named co-captains of the Yankees on March 4, 1986.[24]
The final years of Guidry’s 14-year major league career were hampered by shoulder and elbow injuries. He retired from baseball on July 12, 1989.

Coaching career[edit]
Guidry joined Yankees manager Joe Torre’s coaching staff as pitching coach in the 2006 season, replacing Mel Stottlemyre. Guidry was criticized in 2007 for underachieving the Yankees’ highly acclaimed pitching staff. In 2007, the Yankees pitchers went the sixth-most batters overall in the major leagues; This was the most walks in a season for a Yankees pitching staff since 2000. Torres’ departure from the Yankees after the 2007 season ended Guidry’s tenure as pitching coach. Although interested in returning to the Yankees for the 2008 season, he was not offered a position on new manager Joe Girardi’s coaching staff. He returned to the Yankees as a spring training instructor.[31]
Former New York Times writer Harvey Araton wrote a book called Driving Mr. Yogi: Yogi Berra, Ron Guidry, and Baseball’s Greatest Gift that details the friendship Guidry formed with Yogi Berra, the Yankees Hall of Fame (and Guidry’s former trainer and manager). [32]

1978 American League Cy Young Award winner Ron Guidry spent his entire playing career with the New York Yankees and was named their pitching coach beginning in 2006. His 18 strikeouts in a game on June 17, 1978 against the California Angels remains a Yankees team record. His 25-3 record this year is the highest winning percentage in starting pitcher history (Roy Face was 18-1 as a reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1961).
His career record was 170-91 and he also won 3 World Series games. He was a four-time All-Star and, in addition to winning the award in 1978, also placed three times in the top 5 for the Cy Young Awards. Guidry twice led the league in ERA, in consecutive seasons in 1978 and 1979, and won the 1984 Roberto Clemente Award. He led the American League twice in wins and twice in winning percentages. Two of his ten most similar pitchers, by the similarity rating method, are in the Hall of Fame, one of which is Sandy Koufax.
On the BBWAA’s Hall of Fame vote, his highest percentage was 9% in 2000. His candidacy for the Hall suffers from the fact that his 170 wins are fewer than almost any starting pitcher chosen and some of the pitchers with fewer wins than Guidry are in the Hall for special reasons. For example, John Ward won 164 games but was also a position player and manager and baseball manager. Addie Joss, who won 160 games, died during his career. Dizzy Dean had a 30-win season with 150 wins and became a popular sportscaster after his playing days.
On the other hand, Guidry has played for highly visible teams, and his win rate is higher than the vast majority of Hall of Fame starting pitchers. In fact, it’s very similar to Sandy Koufax’s. Four of the six most similar players (prior to the start of the 2011 season) are active players. The retired pitcher most like Guidry is another Yankees pitcher, Ed Lopat, but Lopat’s winning percentage wasn’t nearly as good as Guidry’s. Bret Saberhagen, the retired pitcher who is second most like Guidry, is not in the Hall of Fame.
