Comedian Ron Sexton talks about his alter-ego Donnie Baker
Donnie Baker is a rude, wacky, overzealous git – and he’s the brainchild of comedian Ron Sexton. The character of Donnie was hatched in a series of phone calls on The BOB & Tom Show, but proved so popular with viewers that they eventually took him to the stage. Sexton will be bringing Donnie Baker to The Laughing Derby this weekend, and he took a few minutes to chat with us about Louisville and his old friend Tim Wilson.
LEO: Is Donnie based on someone you know?
Ron Sexton: I don’t know why it always seemed so weird to me, but I thought it would be funny if someone on a radio show was on the phone and then started yelling roughly at someone off to the side. When we hit the streets, people were convinced it was real, and I was a little scared that being out there like that might lose it’s charm. And I thought he was the type of person who liked wolves, so he needed a lot of t-shirts with different wolves on them, and he would have an opinion on all of them.
LEO: You’ve been to Louisville many times. Are you ready to return?
RS: Personally, I was friends with Tim Wilson and it was kind of his home club so I always kind of feel Tim’s presence. I didn’t go (to that club) until Tim passed. I’ve always worked in other spaces in Louisville, like The Brown Theater or 4th Street Live. But Tim lived in the Highlands and the first time I drove through this part of town alone I thought: Wow, I understand why Tim loved not only the club but the area so much.
LEO: Is there room on stage with a character like Donnie to fit in if the audience isn’t into it that night?
RS: Yes, I take the temperature of the crowd every night. That’s one of the things Tim taught me: every comedy audience is different. Just because a dog looks happy and wags its tail doesn’t mean it won’t bite you. So I have a few Donnie jokes that I tell early on that let me know how to take the show every night.
LEO: Tim has been such a loss to the comedy community. Was he someone you looked up to when you started?
RS: Well, it’s funny. I never intended Donnie to score Baker the way he did. I figured it would be some kind of disposable figure that could survive a few calls to Bob & Tom, and that would be it. I just had an idea of this guy being confident for all the wrong reasons, and I was like, “Oh damn, I’m going to try.” But it wasn’t until he kind of exploded and I took him out on the street for the first time, and when I got Tim’s approval, I thought Donnie might actually be something. It’s funny that Tim wasn’t a huge fan of Larry the Cable Guy at all, but he loved Donnie Baker; that was all I needed for validation. It means the world to me to this day and I miss him very much.

Donnie Baker is ‘comedy heaven’ for his creator
Ron Sexton created the character of Donnie Baker for radio station’s nationally syndicated “Bob & Tom Show” about five years ago because he thought it would do for a few phone calls.
The boss-hating, self-proclaimed character from God’s gift to women with the fake, boastful voice, always trying to sell his boat, was championed by radio show co-host Tom Griswold.
“It was like lucky dust falling on me from comedy heaven,” Sexton said in a phone interview from Indianapolis, where he works as a writer and plays other characters on the show.
“Tom saved me,” added Sexton, 40. “As soon as I got his blessing, vroom, it started.”
Shortly thereafter, Sexton began taking Donnie on tour with the Pork Pistols, which Sexton describes as “every bad garage band you’ve ever seen.”
“I wanted it to look like this huge failed garage band where you’re like, ‘Why are these idiots following this guy who can’t really sing?'” he said.
Most of the pseudo-band’s material is parody, he said, with some original material featured on the radio show.

His inspiration for Donnie’s look came from a picture he saw in the newspaper, Sexton said.
The man, who was photographed at a school picnic, wore a Jeff Blake No. 8 Cincinnati Bengals football jersey and a cap with the insignia of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., also No. 8.
Sexton modified the look and added Zuba’s animal print track pants, which were big in the 1980s and ’90s. He often wears a black t-shirt with a picture of a wolf on it.
“A lot of stuff you see at truck stops,” Sexton said. “Thank god the donnies of the world are the reason these things are on sale.”
Sexton is one of two writers and voice actors on the show. Alongside Donnie, he also stars as trucker Floyd, brash business traveler Kenny Tarmac, dimwitted Rick (a new character) and stars Steven Seagal, James Gandolfini, Charles Barkley and Dr. Phil McGraw.
There is no discussion as to what material or characters should feature in the daily show, Sexton said.
“I rarely go in with anything prepared. Some mornings I’ll walk in with a little thing or an idea or a joke and fill out a call about it,” he said. “It’s a lot more like dealing with a heckler in a club.”
