Franklin Roberto Lashley (born July 16, 1976) is an American professional wrestler, mixed martial artist, and bodybuilder. He is currently signed to WWE, performing on the Raw brand under the ring name Bobby Lashley, and is the current WWE United States Champion in his third term. He is an eight-time world champion, having been a two-time WWE Champion, two-time ECW World Champion, and four-time Impact World Heavyweight Champion. Lashley is also known for his mixed martial arts (MMA) career with Bellator MMA and Strikeforce.

Lashley made his WWE debut in 2005 and appeared on the SmackDown brand, where he became a one-time US Champion. After being drafted to the ECW brand the following year, Lashley became a two-time ECW World Champion, the first African American to hold the championship. During this time, he had a high-profile rivalry with CEO Vince McMahon, which included representing Donald Trump in the “Billionaires’ Show” at WrestleMania 23, before leaving the company in 2008.

He then pursued a career in MMA and had his first professional fight in December 2008. After a career record of 10-2, he signed with Bellator MMA in 2014 where he won all five of his career fights from 2014-2016.

In 2009, Lashley appeared in professional wrestling promotion TNA (later renamed Impact), where he became a four-time TNA/Impact World Heavyweight Champion and the first African American to hold that championship. He was also a one-time X Division Champion and the last King of the Mountain Champion. Upon his return to WWE in 2018, he was assigned to the Raw brand, becoming a two-time Intercontinental Champion and winning a second and third US Championship. He eventually won the WWE Championship twice, becoming the third African American to hold the WWE Championship (after The Rock and Kofi Kingston).

He has directed multiple pay-per-view (PPV) events for WWE and TNA/Impact, including the 2016 edition of TNA/Impact’s flagship event, Bound for Glory. He is also one of the two wrestlers to win the WWE, ECW and TNA/Impact World Championships, the other being Rob Van Dam. Lashley is the only wrestler to have had multiple reigns at the above championships.

Franklin Roberto Lashley was born on July 16, 1976 in Junction City, Kansas,[7][8] to a US Army drill sergeant father. Lashley is of Panamanian descent. He grew up in a single-parent household with a mother who spoke little English and struggled to find a good job.[9] He has three older sisters, one of whom remains on active duty in the US Air Force as of 2015. The family occasionally moved from one military base to another.[10] While his father was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, Lashley attended Fort Riley Middle School, where he was introduced to amateur wrestling in the seventh grade as an alternative to football. He later graduated from Junction City High School where he continued to wrestle. He attended Missouri Valley College where he was the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Wrestling Champion in 1996, 1997 and 1998 in the 177 lb category and graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in human service agency ab management and recreation administration.[13] He followed his father into the US Army after college and continued to compete in amateur wrestling in the Army’s World Class Athlete Program. During three years in the Army, he won a gold and a silver medal at the International Military Sports Council’s Senior Freestyle Wrestling event. In 2003, while living and training in Colorado Springs to qualify for Team USA for the 2004 Olympics, Lashley witnessed a bank robbery and had to duck for cover to avoid gunfire. This resulted in a knee injury that required surgery, ending his amateur career.

Professional wrestling career[edit]

World Wrestling Entertainment (2005–2008)[edit]

US Champion (2005–2006) [ edit ]

In mid-2005, Lashley appeared in four live events for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and wrestled in dark matches for both Raw and SmackDown! Brands.[6][1] On September 23, 2005, he made his televised WWE debut as a face on SmackDown! under his real name. He was featured as a three-time National Amateur Wrestling Champion, four-time All-American, two-time Armed Forces Champion and 2002 World Military Championships silver medalist. In his first match, he defeated Simon Dean. He defeated Dean again on his pay-per-view debut on No Mercy. Lashley defeated numerous Superstars on both SmackDown! and raw.[6] On the episode of SmackDown! on November 11, Lashley defeated Orlando Jordan in a qualifier for a spot on Team SmackDown! at Survivor Series, where he was eliminated first. Prior to this elimination, Lashley dominated the Raw Superstars, performing various “power moves” and a finisher on Carlito. However, a chokeslam from Kane, who was on the apron, resulted in Lashley being eliminated by Shawn Michaels. Smackdown Team! kept winning.[15][16]

On January 6, 2006, Lashley became the first SmackDown! wrestlers to qualify for this year’s Royal Rumble. At the Royal Rumble, Lashley became the eighth wrestler to enter the match in which he eliminated Sylvain, but he was then eliminated through the combination of Raw’s then World Tag Team Champions Big Show and Kane. After the Royal Rumble, Lashley began a feud with John “Bradshaw” Layfield, which led to a match at No Way Out where Lashley suffered his first loss in singles competition, largely due to interference from Finlay. This led to a feud between Lashley and Finlay that lasted throughout February and March and most notably a Lumberjack match on the episode of SmackDown! on March 17, which Finlay won after using a shillelagh.

After winning a Last Chance Battle Royal on the March 24 episode of SmackDown! most recently eliminating MNM,[21] Lashley entered his first WrestleMania (WrestleMania 22) ranked match Money in the Bank – won by Rob Van Dam.[22] Next, Lashley participated in the 2006 King of the Ring tournament on SmackDown! part. He made it to the finals, defeating Mark Henry and Finlay in the process. However, in the final round, which took place on Judgment Day, he was defeated by Booker T with the help of Finlay. When Booker was crowned during his coronation, Lashley impaled Booker on the throne.[23] These acts grew into a feud with the newly named “King Booker” and the other members of his court (Queen Sharmell, Finlay and William Regal). During this feud, Lashley won his first professional wrestling championship by defeating JBL for the US Championship on the episode of SmackDown! on May 26, which he defeated a little less than two months later on the May 26 episode of SmackDown! lost to Finlay on July 14. 24][25] Lashley later joined forces with Batista against the court. Shortly after losing the US Championship, a doctor declared Lashley uncompetitive, stating that an annual physical showed Lashley had elevated liver enzymes and therefore would not be cleared to wrestle pending a further physical. Lashley returned to the SmackDown a few weeks later! Roster to continue his feud with the court and won his first match for the World Heavyweight Championship at No Mercy against King Booker. The fight subsequently turned into a four-way bout, also involving Batista and Booker’s ally Finlay. King Booker won the match after pinning Finlay.

ECW World Champion (2006–2008) [ edit ]

On November 14, 2006, Lashley switched to the ECW brand. He debuted the brand with a surprise performance to sign a last-place finish in the Extreme Elimination Chamber match for December’s ECW World Championship with Dismember.[28] At December to Dismember, Lashley became the fifth person dismissed into the match. He eliminated both Test and The Big Show by pinfall after a javelin to become the new ECW World Champion, making him the first African American to win the championship as well as the third African American overall World Champion in WWE history. 29] After winning the ECW World Championship, Lashley then had successful title defenses against Big Show, Rob Van Dam, Test, Hardcore Holly, Kenny Dykstra, and Mr. Kennedy.[6] On the March 19, 2007 episode of Raw, Lashley officially became the first and only person to ever break Chris Masters’ masterlock hold (Swinging Full Nelson), thus becoming the first and only person to ever defeat the masterlock challenge.

In early 2007, Lashley was chosen by Donald Trump to represent him in a “Battle of the Billionaires” match against Vince McMahon’s representative, Umaga, which also featured Vince’s longtime opponent Stone Cold Steve Austin as a guest referee. At WrestleMania 23 in a hair-to-hair match, Lashley defeated Umaga after a javelin and helped Trump and Austin shave McMahon’s head afterwards per the match’s loss condition, saving Donald Trump’s hair from being shaved off. After WrestleMania, Lashley faced off against Mr. McMahon. McMahon booked himself, his son Shane McMahon, and Umaga in a 3v1 handicap match against Lashley at Backlash for the ECW World Championship. After two violent dives from Umaga, Mr. McMahon tagged into the match and pinned Lashley to win the title.[32] Lashley legitimately injured his shoulder during the game and after an examination days later it was found he had a damaged rotator cuff but did not require surgery at the time. On Judgment Day, Lashley defeated Vince, Shane, and Umaga in a 3-on-1 handicap rematch after beating the Dominator against Shane McMahon. However, Lashley didn’t win the ECW World Championship because he didn’t pin Mr. McMahon. As a result, Mr. McMahon retained the title.[34] On June 3 at One Night Stand, Lashley defeated Vince McMahon in a street fight to win the ECW World Championship for a second reign, despite interference from Shane McMahon and Umaga in the match, making Lashley the first man to serve twice since won the ECW World Championship WWE has reactivated the title.[35]

On the June 11 episode of Raw, Lashley was drafted to the Raw brand as part of the 2007 WWE draft. As a result of the move, Lashley was disqualified from the ECW World Championship by Vince McMahon.[36] He competed in a challenge match against Mick Foley, Randy Orton, King Booker and John Cena for the WWE Championship at Vengeance: Night of Champions, which Cena won to retain the WWE Championship. Lashley became the number one contender for the WWE Championship by winning the “Beat the Clock” challenge on the July 2 episode of Raw. On July 22 at The Great American Bash, he lost to Cena and after the match they shook hands as a sign of respect. On the July 30 episode of Raw, Lashley was defeated by Mr. Kennedy. During the game, Lashley was “hurt” after Mr. Kennedy kicked Lashley’s shoulder in the ring steps, giving Lashley time off for surgery because of the legitimate injury he sustained at The Great American Bash. After a six-month hiatus, WWE announced that on February 4, 2008, Lashley was released from his WWE contract.

Independent circuit (2008) [ edit ]

After leaving WWE, Lashley began wrestling on the independent circuit in May 2008. In June 2008, he appeared in Mexico at Lucha Libre AAA World Wide’s flagship event, Triplemanía XVI, where he, Kenzo Suzuki and Electroshock Chessman defeated Silver King and La Parka, Jr. [41] [better source needed] Im In July 2008, Lashley wrestled in Puerto Rico at the World Wrestling Council’s 35th Anniversary show, defeating Rhino. Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2009–2010) [ edit ]

Lashley appeared at Total Nonstop Action Wrestling’s lockdown pay-per-view event on April 19, 2009 and later also appeared on the episode of TNA Impact! This week, he pointed and smiled at The Main Event Mafia, stepping on heel. On July 15, TNA announced that he had signed an official contract with the company.[43] On July 23, Kurt Angle introduced Lashley as the newest member of the Main Event Mafia. Lashley entered the ring and hugged Angle while the rest of the mafia held up a beaten and battered Mick Foley. Angle then told Lashley to take Foley down, but as Lashley prepared to spear Foley, he turned on Angle and cleared the mafia out of the ring, making a face of himself.

In the issue of Impact! July 30, Lashley made his in-ring debut for TNA in a tag team match when he and Mick Foley wrestled World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle and Legends Champion Kevin Nash, with Angle or Nash pinning became. whoever defeated them would win their respective titles. It started out as a handicap match as the Main Event Mafia attacked Lashley before the match, but eventually Lashley entered the match and helped Mick Foley pin Nash to win the match for his team and become the Legends Champion. In the August 27 issue of Impact! Jeremy Borash interviewed him and TNA President Dixie Carter, in which she said her goal was to make him a world champion in both MMA and TNA. At No Surrender, he defeated Rhino with a KO punch.

After No Surrender, Lashley began feuding with Samoa Joe. After teaming up with Team 3D to bring Rhino and The British Invasion (Doug Williams and Brutus Magnus) to the October 1 issue of Impact! to win, Joe attacked Lashley and choked him with a rear naked choke. The following week, Lashley cost Joe the X Division Championship in a match against Amazing Red.[47] At Bound for Glory, Lashley defeated Joe in a submission match. The following month, Lashley’s winning streak came to an end at Turning Point when Scott Steiner pinned him after a steel pipe shot in a Falls Count Anywhere match. On November 26, Lashley defeated Abyss, Desmond Wolfe and Robert Roode to win the TNA Championship Series tournament and earn a future World Heavyweight Title Shot. At Final Resolution, Lashley avenged his earlier loss by defeating Steiner with a pipeshot in a Last Man Standing match. On January 4, 2010, the Monday night edition of Impact!, Lashley and Kristal repented after demanding their immediate release from TNA so that Lashley could fully focus on his MMA career.[52] Lashley continued to attack random wrestlers until he was granted what he wanted. In the episode of Impact! on January 21, Lashley suddenly apologized to new executive producer Eric Bischoff for his actions, saying he just wanted to compete, [54] but was fired from him the following week. This was Lashley’s last TNA appearance until 2014.[55] On February 10, 2010, Lashley’s profile was removed from the official TNA website.[56] In an interview with Heavy Sports, Lashley claimed the release was legitimate and was done so he could fully focus on his MMA career.[57]

Independent Circle (2010–2014) [ edit ]

Lashley returned to Japan on September 25, 2010 for a tag team match with Bob Sapp against Kendo Kashin and Tamon Honda. Bob and Bobby were defeated. Since then, Lashey has appeared regularly at the IGF.[7] In 2011 he took part in the IGF championship tournament. He won the first round match against Keith Hanson,[59] but was defeated by Josh Barnett in the semifinals.[60] On June 26, 2013, Lashley signed a two-year contract with IGF after winning the promotion general election.

On October 20, 2012, Lashley wrestled Jay Bradley and Robert Anthony in a three-way match for the vacant Resistance Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship, which was won by Anthony. On December 27, 2014, Lashley defeated Mexx and Tiny Iron to win the IWS Heavyweight Championship.

On March 9, 2014, Lashley returned to TNA after lockdown in Miami, Florida and answered Ethan Carter III’s open challenge after his scheduled opponent, Kurt Angle, was unable to wrestle due to injury. On the March 20 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley and Carter had a rematch which again ended in a no contest after Willow attacked Carter. During his second stint with the company, Lashley alternatively wore either his full ring name or the abbreviated mononym “Lashley”.

On the May 15 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley returned after running to Eric Young’s rescue, but instead hit Young with a javelin and allied with MVP and Kenny King, turning heel. At Slammiversary, Lashley defeated Samoa Joe to earn Young’s proper challenge for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship in a steel cage match with Austin Aries, but lost the match. Lashley defeated Young on the June 19 episode of Impact Wrestling to win the TNA World Heavyweight Championship, his first title in TNA, making him the first African American in TNA history to win the title, as well as his third world championship reign overall . He successfully defended the title against Young on July 3. On June 25 (aired July 17), Lashley retained the title against Jeff Hardy. At Impact Wrestling: Destination X on July 31, Lashley successfully defended the title against Austin Aries, who lost the X Division Championship to a title shot. At No Surrender, Lashley successfully defended his title against Bobby Roode. On September 18, at the tapings for the October 28 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Roode.

Lashley regained the championship on January 7, 2015 after action against Roode by MVP, King, Samoa Joe and Low Ki, and Eric Young. On the June 3 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley defeated Eric Young after Chris distracted Melendez Young. At Slammiversary, Lashley teamed with Mr. Anderson against Ethan Carter III and Tire in a losing effort. On the August 12 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley defeated Jessie Godderz in a King of the Mountain match qualifier for the vacant TNA King of the Mountain Championship, which was won by PJ Black. On the August 26 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley competed in a four-way match for a King of the Mountain Championship shot, which was won by Bobby Roode. On the September 16 episode of Impact Wrestling, Team TNA (Lashley, Drew Galloway, Davey Richards, Eddie Edwards and Bram) defeated Team GFW (Jeff Jarrett, Eric Young, Chris Mordetzky, Brian Myers and Sonjay Dutt) in a Lethal Lockdown -Match. On October 4 at Bound for Glory, Lashley unsuccessfully challenged Bobby Roode for the TNA King of the Mountain Championship. In October and November, Lashley competed in the TNA World Title Series to win the vacant TNA World Heavyweight Championship where he finished second in his block to successfully advance to Round 16 where he defeated Drew Galloway and advanced to the Quarterfinals against Mahabali Shera reached the semifinals but failed to qualify for the finals when he was defeated by eventual winner Ethan Carter III.

Championship reigns (2016–2018) [ edit ]

On the March 8 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley defeated Kurt Angle in Angle’s farewell match with the company. After the match, he continued to attack Angle until he was driven off by Drew Galloway, Eddie Edwards, and Ethan Carter III, causing him to turn heel again. The following week, Lashley attacked Josh Mathews and D’Angelo Dinero. On the March 22 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley engaged in a feud to determine the number one contender for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship, but was eliminated by an interfering D’Angelo Dinero. On the April 5 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley defeated Dinero in a street fight. On the May 3 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley won a three-way match over Jeff Hardy and Mike Bennett to earn a TNA World Heavyweight Championship shot against Drew Galloway. However, on the May 15 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley failed to win the title in a Lumberjack match after a disqualification. Finally, on June 12 at Slammiversary, Lashley defeated Galloway by knockout in a tap out or knockout match, beginning his third reign as the TNA World Heavyweight Champion. At Destination X, Lashley defended his title against Eddie Edwards, with Edwards’ X Division Championship also at stake. However, the match ended in a no contest when Mike Bennett and debutant Moose attacked him. On the July 21 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley defeated Edwards in a Winner Take All Six Sides of Steel match to retain the TNA World Heavyweight Championship and win the X Division Championship. On the August 11 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley defeated James Storm to retain the TNA World Heavyweight and X Division Championships and win the TNA King of the Mountain Championship. He was then confronted by Aron Rex, TNA’s latest acquisition, who was watching Lashley from the ramp.[73]

On the January 5 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley failed to regain the championship in a three-way match also involving Ethan Carter III after interference from Davey Richards. At One Night Only: Live! defeated Lashley Richards. The following week, he defeated Ethan Carter III in a Last Man Standing match to become the number one contender for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. In the Genesis episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley defeated Edwards in a 30 minute Iron Man match to win his fourth TNA World Heavyweight Championship. On the January 12 episode of Impact Wrestling, he successfully retained his title against mixed martial artist Josh Barnett. On the March 2 episode of Impact Wrestling, Lashley lost the TNA World Heavyweight Championship to Alberto El Patron. However, due to El Patron’s controversial victory, the championship was returned to Lashley, keeping his title reign uninterrupted. However, he would relinquish the title to El Patron on Slammiversary XV.

After losing a number one match to Matt Sydal at Destination X and failing to reclaim the title in a Gauntlet for the Gold match, Lashley announced that he (kayfabe) was quitting wrestling to focus on his MMA career to concentrate. [77] This led to a feud against Moose involving the American top team. At Bound for Glory, Lashley and King defeated Mo Moose and Stephan Bonnar in a Six Sides of Steel match. In the early months of 2018, Lashley had minor feuds with oVe and Brian Cage, all of which were chronicled prior to his departure.[79][80]

Universal Championship Pursuits (2018–2019) [ edit ]

On the April 9, 2018 episode of Raw, the night after WrestleMania 34, Lashley returned to WWE after a ten-year absence and once again became a member of the Raw brand, where he confronted and attacked Elias with a chair. [81] In the first month of Lashley’s return, he competed in a series of tag team matches, working with the likes of Braun Strowman, Bobby Roode, Finn Bálor, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, all victorious against the likes of Kevin Owens were. Sami Zayn, Jinder Mahal, The Miz, Curtis Axel, and Bo Dallas.[82][83][84] Lashley later teamed with Braun Strowman at Backlash in a winning attempt against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. After Backlash, Lashley entered into a feud with Sami Zayn, culminating in Lashley facing Zayn in a winning attempt at Money in the Bank. Lashley then entered a feud with Roman Reigns, with both men believing that they were the rightful challengers to the Universal Championship. This led to a match between the two at Extreme Rules where Lashley defeated Reigns. The following night on Raw, two triple threat matches were scheduled to determine who would face Universal Champion Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, with Lashley and Reigns winning their respective matches and the following week a number one match between the two set up. won the Reigns.[90]

On the September 17 episode of Raw, he introduced his new manager, Lio Rush. On the October 8 episode of Raw, Lashley defeated Kevin Owens before viciously attacking him post-match and turning heel for the first time in his WWE career. At Survivor Series, which Team Raw won, Lashley was among the sole survivors along with Braun Strowman and Drew McIntyre.[93] He then reignited his feud with Elias which included a ladder match with a guitar hanging over the ring at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs which Lashley lost but used the guitar on Elias after the match. This sparked a Miracle-type match at 34th Street Fight between the two in which Lashley was defeated.

Intercontinental Champion (2019–2020) [ edit ]

On the January 14, 2019 episode of Raw, Lashley won the Intercontinental Championship from Dean Ambrose for the first time in his career in a Triple Threat match also involving Seth Rollins, beginning his first WWE title reign since June 2007 96][97] At the Royal Rumble, Lashley entered the Royal Rumble match as the 26th competitor, but was eliminated in thirteen seconds by eventual winner Seth Rollins. At Elimination Chamber, Lashley lost his title to Finn Bálor in a handicap match also involving Lio Rush after Rush was pinned, ending his reign at 34 days. In Fastlane on March 10, Lashley teamed with Baron Corbin and Drew McIntyre against The Shield in a losing effort. The following night on Raw, after interference from Lio Rush, Lashley defeated Finn Bálor to win the Intercontinental Championship, beginning his second reign. On the March 25 episode of Raw, Lashley teamed with Jinder Mahal against Finn Bálor in a losing effort after Mahal was pinned, and as per match regulations, Bálor earned an Intercontinental Championship rematch against Lashley. At WrestleMania 35, Lashley lost the title to Bálor, ending his reign at 27 days.

At the final chapter of The Shield event, Lashley teamed up with Baron Corbin and Drew McIntyre to face The Shield in a losing effort. Lashley lost to Braun Strowman at Super ShowDown. On the June 17 episode of Raw, Strowman eliminated Lashley from a fatal five-way elimination match to earn an opportunity at the United States Championship. Lashley, in turn, helped eliminate Strowman. The following week, Lashley attacked Strowman after losing a tug of war. A Fall Count Everywhere match on the July 1 episode ended in a no contest after Strowman attacked Lashley through the entrance’s LED video wall and both were taken to a local hospital. The two were then scheduled for a last man standing match at Extreme Rules, which Lashley lost.

Lashley returned on the September 30 episode of Raw by interrupting Rusev, and he and Lana, who is Rusev’s wife, were making out. They began a feud with Rusev, in which the couple tormented Rusev by being seen together in numerous romantic situations, and they had a (story)wedding ceremony on the December 30 episode of Raw. At TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, he defeated Rusev in a table match after being distracted by Lana. On the February 17, 2020 episode of Raw, Lashley teamed with Angel Garza to defeat Rusev and Humberto Carrillo, ending their feud. At Super ShowDown, Lashley competed for the Tuwaiq Trophy where he was eliminated by R-Truth. At WrestleMania 36, ​​Lashley lost to Aleister Black.

The Hurt Business and WWE Champion (2020–2022) [ edit ]

After WrestleMania, Lashley went on a winning streak against various competitors.[121][122][123] On the May 11 episode of Raw, Lashley joined MVP, which also infuriated Lana. Lashley retained the title on Clash of Champions against Apollo Crews [134], on Hell in a Cell against Slapjack [135] and against Jeff Hardy, Riddle and Titus O’Neil on several episodes of Raw. At the Royal Rumble event on January 31, 2021, Lashley competed in the Royal Rumble match but was eliminated by multiple wrestlers.

At the Elimination Chamber, he lost the title to Riddle in a triple threat match also involving John Morrison, ending his reign at 175 days. Later that same night, Lashley brutally attacked Drew McIntyre, allowing The Miz to cash his money in the bank’s briefcase to become WWE Champion. On the following episode of Raw, Lashley’s attack on McIntyre was exposed as part of a deal he and MVP made with The Miz, then Lashley defeated Braun Strowman to become the number one contender for the WWE Championship. On the March 1 episode of Raw, Lashley defeated The Miz in a Lumberjack match to win the WWE Championship for the first time. On the March 8 episode of Raw, Lashley retained the title against Miz. On the March 29 episode of Raw, Lashley attacked his partners Alexander and Benjamin for losing to McIntyre in a 2v1 handicap match, thus knocking them out of the faction. Lashley successfully defended the WWE Championship against Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 37, at WrestleMania Backlash in a triple threat match also involving Braun Strowman, and at Hell in a Cell in a Last Chance Hell in a Cell match. Lashley then feuded with Kofi Kingston where a match was fought between the two at Money in the Bank for the WWE Championship. At the event, he retained the title against Kingston.

On the July 19 episode of Raw, Goldberg returned and challenged Lashley for the WWE Championship. Lashley initially declined the challenge, but on the August 2 episode of Raw, Lashley accepted Goldberg’s challenge and the match would be made official for SummerSlam. At the event, Lashley retained the WWE Championship due to a referee stoppage after Goldberg was unable to continue.

On the September 13 episode of Raw, after successfully defending the title against Randy Orton, Lashley lost the WWE Championship to Big E, who cashed his money in the bank briefcase and ended his reign after 196 days. At Extreme Rules, Lashley teamed with AJ Styles and Omos to face The New Day in a losing effort. The following night on Raw, Lashley faced Big E for the WWE Championship, but the match ended in a disqualification after Benjamin and Alexander helped Lashley fend off The New Day and seemingly reunited The Hurt Business. WWE Official Adam Pearce then issued a rematch to be held in a steel cage where Big E defeated Lashley.

On the October 4 episode of Raw, Goldberg called out Lashley and in response, Lashley challenged Goldberg to a no holds barred match at Crown Jewel. At the event, Goldberg defeated Lashley to end their feud. On November 8 episode of Raw, Lashley defeated Dominik Mysterio to take his place on Team Raw in the Men’s Survivor Series match. At Survivor Series, Lashley was eliminated by count-out, but Team Raw still won with Seth Rollins being the lone survivor. He defeated Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble to win his second WWE Championship,[155] but lost it 21 days later in the Elimination Chamber.[156]

On the March 28 episode of Raw, Lashley returned from injury and responded to Omos’ show of dominance by pitting a match between the two at WrestleMania 38, turning his face for the first time since October 2018] at WrestleMania 38 defeated Lashley Omos to end his unbeaten streak. On Raw after WrestleMania 38, MVP turned on Lashley and allied with Omos, cementing Lashley’s face turn. Lashley lost to Omos at WrestleMania Backlash after being distracted by MVP. This led to a 2v1 handicap match at Hell in a Cell where Lashley defeated Omos and MVP, ending their feud. After Hell in a Cell, Lashley began a feud with United States Champion Theory, culminating at Money in the Bank where Lashley defeated Theory to win his third United States Championship.

Lashley made his mixed martial arts debut at the Mixed Fighting Alliance (MFA) inaugural event “There Will Be Blood” on December 13, 2008 at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida. He won via TKO (cut) over Joshua Franklin in 41 seconds of the first round. Lashley’s next fight was on March 21, 2009. He was scheduled to fight Ken Shamrock but his opponent became Bellator MMA veteran Jason Guida after Shamrock tested positive for steroids. Lashley won the fight after a unanimous decision. Lashley signed with the Maximum Fighting Championship and made his debut on May 15 against Mike Cook, who entered his ring wearing a Rey Mysterio mask, which Lashley took as an insult. He went on to defeat Cook with a guillotine choke just 24 seconds into the first round. On June 27, 2009, Lashley defeated Bob Sapp at the PFP: Ultimate Chaos event in Biloxi, Mississippi. He won the fight via TKO (strikes) in the first round, setting Lashley’s MMA record 4-0.

Strikeforce (2010–2011) [ edit ]

He was due to make his Strikeforce debut against undefeated heavyweight Shane Del Rosario at Strikeforce: Miami, but for reasons unknown, Strikeforce decided to switch opponents. Lashley was then scheduled to face journeyman Jimmy Ambriz at Strikeforce: Miami on January 30, 2010, [173] but that matchup was scrapped as well. Lashley faced former UFC fighter Wes Sims at the event. Lashley defeated Sims by TKO victory in the 1st round to remain undefeated.

Lashley was scheduled to fight at Strikeforce: Nashville on April 17, 2010 as the promotion had already submitted an opponent for Lashley and was awaiting approval from the Tennessee Athletic Commission. According to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, the fight would likely be the fourth fight on the CBS televised portion of the event.[176] On April 5, Lashley confirmed that he would not appear on the map because Strikeforce officials could not guarantee an appearance on the televised portion of the map due to time constraints.[177] Bobby was scheduled to appear at Strikeforce: Los Angeles in June’s fight against Ron Sparks but suffered a knee injury and did not compete.

Lashley faced Chad Griggs on August 21, 2010 at Strikeforce: Houston. Lashley came out and shot the takedown and ground and stomp. Lashley initially dominated, but Griggs caught him with a series of uppercuts on one of the first-round takedowns, opening a gash under the left corner of Lashley’s left eye. Lashley struggled to stop Griggs from hitting him despite having control of him on the ground, but Griggs still found openings on the ground. Lashley was able to keep going in the second round, continuing takedowns and ground and pound. Lashley finally got to the mount midway through the second round and unloaded a lot of good shots at Griggs while maintaining control. Referee Jon Schorle then ordered the fighters to stand up for inactivity, even though Lashley was in full gear at the time. Lashley later complained to the referee about the cut under his eye, and with 33 seconds left in round two referee Jon Schorle asked the ringside doctor to inspect the cut. However, when Lashley decided to continue fighting, controversy erupted when referee Jon Schorle failed to return Lashley to the riding position he was in when the fight originally ended. Griggs then sprawled out of a desperate takedown from Lashley near the end of the second round and hit Lashley’s eye, which was already cut by the end of the round, with hammer fists. The ring doctor then stopped the fight, resulting in Lashley losing by TKO at the end of the second round. After the backstage fight, Lashley was placed on a stretcher due to dehydration. After the fight, it was discovered that Lashley was suffering from mono and was subsequently unable to train for four months.

Titan Fighting Championship (2011, 2013) [ edit ]

On February 18, 2011, the Titan Fighting Championship announced the signing of Lashley. He was expected to debut against James Jack, but on March 16, 2011 officials announced they had lost contact with Jack and instead John Ott stepped in to fight Lashley. The pace of the fight slowed drastically in the second round, where Lashley began showing the same cardio issues that plagued him in his previous fight. Despite the consequences of illness, he was able to win a unanimous decision.

Lashley has signed a three-year deal with Shark Fights[187] and was due to make his debut against Darrill Schoonover in November. The fight was to be for the heavyweight title.[188] However, Schoonover later withdrew from the fight due to an injury. Lashley was then hired to referee Shark Fights 21 against Tim Hague. But Hague pulled out of the fight for unknown reasons and was replaced by Dave Huckaba. On November 7, it was confirmed that the fight with Huckaba had been called off for unknown reasons. Lashley was then scheduled to face Mark Martinez, but Martinez was later pulled from the fight due to expired bloodwork.

On November 11, 2011, Lashley became the new Shark Fights Heavyweight Champion, defeating Karl Knothe by submission in the first round. Knothe was the fifth other opponent set to face Lashley after numerous fighters withdrew for various reasons.

On August 29, 2016, it was announced that Lashley would face Josh Appelt on October 21, 2016 at the Bellator 162. Lashley won the second round via rear naked choke submission. In April 2018, Bellator officials stated that Lashley was still signed to Bellator after his return to WWE.

Personal life[edit]

Lashley’s first daughter, Kyra, was born in 2005.[208][209] He later dated former WWE wrestler Kristal Marshall, with whom he had a son named Myles in 2008 and a daughter named Naomi in 2011.

Lashley has been involved in several business ventures. In 2007 he opened a health smoothie shop.[208] In July 2009, he announced the launch of the Lashley Network websites, which includes his official gym, nutrition store and social media pages. In a launch press release, he stated that he aimed to keep his reputation and name in the public eye so he could achieve his goal of becoming the best MMA fighter.
