‘He had a huge heart’ Ryan Preston, former URI basketball player, dies in Bahrain

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Ryan Preston made his official visit to the University of Rhode Island ahead of the 2017-18 basketball season.

Born in Brooklyn, he was playing at a junior college in Texas and weighing his options. Preston met with former head coach Dan Hurley and assistant (and current head coach) David Cox at the basketball offices towards the end of his time on campus.

“He shared some things with coaches that you shouldn’t share with coaches,” Cox said. “He was raw. Danny and I looked at each other – Danny was a Jersey boy and I was from D.C. — and we knew this kid had character.

“He had a huge heart. He was ready to change. He just needed a change of environment. So we decided to give him that opportunity and he’s probably one of my biggest success stories as a coach.”

Cox’s eyes turned red as he spoke on the floor at the Ryan Center. The university confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that Preston had died as a result of a car accident in Bahrain. He was 24 years old.

Preston was on his second professional basketball stop after spending the 2019-20 season in Portugal. An athletic 6-foot-7 left-hander, he played in 42 games in two seasons with the Rams from 2017-19. Preston was a reserve with the program’s Atlantic 10 regular-season champions as a junior, the first time URI has since had captured a league crown after renaming the old Eastern 8.

“He was a raw basketball player — just an athlete, basically,” Cox said. “All the work he put into his game and all the determination he had made him a professional player and a professional person.

“As a father, as a coach, as a mentor – memories like that really make you proud and stand out.”

Preston finished his secondary school education in the rough Canarsie neighborhood of his county — about 21% of the population lived below the poverty line in 2018. He graduated from South Shore High and played at grassroots level with the powerful New York Rens. Preston spent two years at Trinity Valley Community College before joining the Rams.

“To be honest, it was an opportunity that he tied to more than just us at the time,” Cox said. “He took that opportunity and rode it.

“He helped us win a championship. He’s graduated. He pursued his goals professionally. It’s a tragic, tragic loss.”

Preston appeared in the first eight games of his debut 2017-18 season but played sparingly the rest of the way. His six points and eight rebounds in a win over Brown in early 2018-19 suggested he could play a bigger role, but Preston stayed largely as an extra piece late this season. He was suspended before a meeting with Fordham in February for expressing frustration with his playing time on social media, but Preston eventually returned to the bench and scored a career-high 12 points in a March win over Massachusetts.

“He made a decision,” Cox said. “It’s quite difficult at 18, 19 to make the decision to change. And he made the decision to change his behavior.

“There were some bumps along the way, which is par for the course for the track. But this is a kid who learned to value their education and graduated. He made the honors list once while he was here. He’s worked a lot on his game during his time here.”

Preston graduated from URI with a degree in Communications and was a student on the Dean’s List for at least one semester. He was signed with Isa Town in the Bahraini Premier League, who opened their season in early September.

Preston is survived by his mother, Melanie, and brother, Robert. Cox said the Rams will wear black stripes over one shoulder on their uniforms for the remainder of the season. There will be a minute’s silence before Wednesday at 6 p.m. Tip with Boston College.
