Colgate University is investigating two racist TikToks made by students

The original TikTok shared by the admitted student was reposted on Instagram by a former Morristown-Beard High School student. In the video, the girl, identified as Sarah Laude, uses TikTok’s green screen feature to display a Google search for “African American.” Then she zooms in on the Shopping tab.

“Get on loser, we’re going shopping,” she murmurs to the audio, while the caption reads, “It’s a joke, please don’t approach me.”

Colgate’s Abdication of Reason and Dereliction of Duty — Bedrock

While the notion that African Americans as a group have such homogenous tastes that one can make recommendations for products based on their race is problematic, it is at least possible since Black Americans have a cohesive culture. What kind of “shopping” is relevant for white slaves? It’s a little funny.

Noticing what this student noticed, shrugging their shoulders and essentially saying, “Life is short, let’s go shopping” is definitely in distaste. But that’s why it’s funny. The humor lies in the absurdity. The joke works by taking the implicit absurdity in the image and making it explicit so it can’t be ignored. A lot of jokes work that way. Was posting the clip on TikTok evidence of tone deafness? Yes. Proof of puberty? Probably – but she’s a teenager, so that hardly seems like a mistake. An act of hate that deserves a retraction of the offer of admission to one of the nation’s top schools? no It’s not even evidence of racism. It’s a testament to her ability to spot and laugh at incongruity and awkwardness in the world. Should she have known better? Yes. But mostly because she should have known that the community she had just joined, and on which her future success largely depended, was both utterly humorless and utterly unforgiving.

There is one other element of the story worth noting. If Colgate sincerely believes that this young woman is a horrible racist and that this joke really reflects a deep blackness in her soul, wasn’t it Colgate’s job to lead her out of the darkness that is consuming her? If her actions are just inappropriate, wasn’t it Colgate’s job to help her become a more empathetic and sensitive young woman? She was smart and accomplished enough to deserve admission to one of your elite clubs, Colgate, she was eager to learn and be guided by you, and your response in her hour of moral need is to throw her out? Colgate, do you really believe that these outcasts, intelligent and capable as they are and will be, will take punishment like babies? They will learn not to speak too loudly because “Mom takes my toys?” That they will learn not to run around the restaurant because “Mom will hit me if I do?” Not even children learn like that, not really and not well . No, these outcasts have been driven away by your thunder… but they will find their way through chaos and night like Satan journeying from Hell to corrupt beautiful Eden. Placating the mob is not only wrong, it’s stupid in the long run.

This overreaction is a good example of why it’s important not to indulge in racial rhetoric that is out of proportion to reality. There may be a reality where Colgate’s actions (and the actions of other schools that have revoked admissions) are not completely insane. But it’s not that reality. Nine unarmed black men were killed by police last year in millions of police interactions. Some of these were horrific accidents, some were justified killings (e.g. situations where suspects contend with an officer for control of his gun), and still others could be examples of horrific abuse and police brutality. But figures like these are little evidence of the dramatic claims being made by protesters and others to justify the burning of businesses and the tearing down of statues. Black people are not hunted in America. Racism is at an all-time low. I could understand if black men were rounded up and put in camps or killed at random by angry racist lynch mobs every day, maybe then I could understand taking a tacky joke so seriously. But America is not like that. If you think so, you are deranged and in the grip of moral mania or insanity. We are witnessing a classic moral panic. We’ve seen them enough times in our history to recognize the signs. Colgate is so eager to capitulate to the mob that it should be in the field of reconnaissance. In fact, his ability and inclination to provide such training is the sole justification for his existence and authority. There comes a time when we no longer entrust our children or students to institutions that have forgotten their most basic purposes.
