It’s not every day that the CEO of a big company calls you because he wants to talk to your readers family to family, but that’s exactly what happened when boss Satya Nadella contacted Good Housekeeping recently — and I jumped at the opportunity myself hold true.
After all, he’s a father of three who not only runs one of the most significant tech companies in the world, but also navigates device rules and screen time with his kids at home, and I thought he knew better than anyone how to do that in my own house (and yours) works with a minimum of friction.
After an introductory Skype call with his wife Anu, we set up an interview at her home near Seattle – easy enough, or so it seemed until I got to the airport. After four delays, a canceled flight, and a detour in the air, I finally landed around 2am—without my luggage, which apparently never left New York. Perfect.
At 7 a.m., I sped to Target, grabbed some clean clothes, and got back to their house late for our interview, worried that I wasn’t making the best impression. But when the front door opened, all my fears dissolved. Anu and Satya greeted me with a warm neighborly hug, offered me coffee and looked like any other friendly family on the street. And they really are.
We have extremely controlled chaos in our home.
“We have extremely controlled chaos in our home,” said Anu, 45, referring to the constant movement of children, a dog and a parade of people settled into their home on a hilltop overlooking a large lake- and went out. As the wife of Microsoft’s CEO, Anu is adept at juggling requirements, raising her three children – including a special needs son – as normally as possible while her husband steers the rest of us straight into the next industrial revolution that is often described as a time when machine intelligence will rival that of humans.
But as 50-year-old Satya says in his inspirational new book, this revolution is about more than designing new apps.
“At its core, it’s about people and that unique quality we call empathy, which will become increasingly valuable in a world where the tide of technology will disrupt the status quo like never before,” he says. In other words, technology is nothing without the gentle touch of humanity.

As we chatted, I learned that Satya’s deeply caring nature owes much to his eldest child, Zain, 21, who is severely disabled. He was born weighing just three pounds after suffocating in the womb; As a result, he is visually impaired, has limited communication skills, and is paraplegic from the waist down. Two daughters followed. It didn’t take long to realize that one had learning differences beyond what the local schools could successfully handle. Anu found the answer at Eaton Arrowsmith Academy in Vancouver, which focuses on brain neuroplasticity — essentially training the brain to function at a new level. Anu shuttled her daughter back and forth for five years and played a role in founding the Eaton Arrowsmith Academy in Redmond, Washington.
Throughout it all, Satya rose steadily through the ranks at Microsoft, a company that was beginning to falter under bureaucracy and power struggles. He was named CEO in February 2014, and he ignited a new growth mindset, emphasizing pushing himself to look at things in new, often sensitive ways.
“After Zain, things started to change for me,” says Satya. “It has had a profound impact on how I think, lead and interact with people.” His wish: that we all feel empowered to create our own changes at home and at work, one sensitive step at a time – starting with the lessons for a happy life he and Anu have learned over the years.

“My childhood was filled with joy,” says Satya, who grew up in India and moved to the United States in 1988 to do his master’s degree in computer science. “My parents created an environment where I could set my own pace and pursue what I wanted. “I’m our family’s IT administrator,” says Satya. The Nadellas have limited screen time for their children and also specified which websites the children can visit. “We get reports about what they did on their computers and they know it,” says Satya. “So it’s very transparent.” Anu adds: “Entertainment technology will always be negotiated in our homes. How many movies, what kind of video games.”

“Technology kept Zain alive,” says Anu. “It’s more than just something to waste time on.” It also gives him more control over his life now: for example, he can choose his own music with a light tap of his head on a sensor. And Microsoft’s new app, Seeing AI, helps people with visual impairments. “You can hold up your phone and it ‘sees’ people – interpreting their feelings, interpreting a menu,” says Satya. “[You can] cook with a recipe, go shopping, read labels, or walk into a conference room with confidence.”
“We both think that children should have dogs,” says Anu. “With that comes a different sense of camaraderie and responsibility — that emotional feeling that there’s a being waiting for you to come back.” Her puppy Winston, almost a year old, is more than a family pet: he provides important emotional support to Zain . “It was impossible for us to think about getting him before, given what else is going on in our lives,” says Satya. “It was such a pleasure.”
“When Satya enters the house, Dad’s home,” says Anu. “And dad does homework with the kids, sits at the table with us. When we go out in public, he gets recognized and the girls see that, but has that affected their everyday calm? I do not think so. Our private lives are pretty private.”
“I like amplifying people’s strengths,” says Satya. Whether you’re at work or with your family, don’t occupy the conversation or do the opposite—sit back and listen without contributing. Instead, do what you can to create an environment where everyone present can speak so everyone’s thoughts get through. They generate better, more diverse ideas.

“I own my mistakes.” As Satya tells, he screwed up part of his first job interview at Microsoft. The problem: He failed a short empathy test. But he’s learned since then. “Anu taught me something deeply through everything that happened with Zain – how to forgive myself. None of us are perfect; none of us will be perfect. Once you come to that deeper insight, you’re not so quick to judge, you’re a better listener, and you can amplify people’s strengths instead of focusing on their weaknesses. I think my path to empathy was possible because of my ability to confront my own flaws and shortcomings.
“I’m looking for opportunities to refresh myself.” About Satya’s rise at Microsoft: “People ask me if I planned it,” says Satya. “No I haven’t. But there was one thing I was good at: give everything at every opportunity or every mistake. I would learn from the mistakes or take the opportunity to make maximum impact. Most of the children who come out of India are top of their class and academically fantastic. I wasn’t any of that. But because I’m constantly challenging myself, it’s led to this growth mentality. I’m designed to look for ways to refresh myself and I think that pretty much defines how I approach life. You can’t suddenly wake up one day and click refresh unless you’ve practiced it all the time.”
