‘Space cult’ members charged in death plot
An alleged leader of an alien cult in the Carroll County suburbs was indicted yesterday along with three accomplices in an alleged hit-and-run scheme.
State police allege Scott Caruthers, 56, plotted last month with his wife Dashielle Lashra, 42, his partner Dulsa Naedek, 42, and his friend David S. Pearl, 46, to hire a man to join former business partner David Gable killing and three other men in exchange for stock valued at an estimated $110,000.

Police said the plot was foiled by the intended killer. Court documents identified him as Amir Tabassi, who sometimes served as Caruthers’ bodyguard. Tabassi contacted the FBI, prompting an investigation that began late last month. Police arrived at Caruthers’ doorstep at 2am yesterday to arrest him and the two women. During a search of the home on Block 500 of Scott Drive, they seized two handguns, computers, journals and other materials.
Pearl was arrested at his home in Block 100 of Masters Court in Westminster.

Each suspect was charged with solicitation and conspiracy to murder. The indictment documents remained sealed last night because the intended victims feared for their safety, police said. Gable’s name appeared on a document in the District Court Commissioner’s office.
The indictments filed yesterday are the latest bizarre twist in the life of Caruthers, a self-proclaimed inventor and poet whose business and personal moves have attracted at least $2.7 million from hundreds of investors and admirers. His plans have left a trail of broken families, bankruptcies and lawsuits, while drawing the attention of state and federal regulators.
Acquaintances describe him as a charismatic man prone to invention, a habit that begins with his name – he was born Arthur Brook Crothers in Anne Arundel County.
He dropped out of high school to enlist in the Army, but was discharged before completing basic training. He has held various low-paying jobs and has claimed to others that he also lived an exciting secret life as a test pilot, spy, astronaut and government assassin.
It wasn’t until 1984, when he came up with the idea for a handleless training weight called the Strongput, that Caruthers began to attract investors. While promoting this company, he meets his co-defendants. His stories about his “secret life” took another twist on the bizarre, including revelations that he was an extraterrestrial working for the government who would one day save his followers from catastrophic “earth changes.”
In a 1999 interview with The Sun, Bob Bonnell, Strongput’s marketing director, described how Caruthers and Lashra (Irmina Dzambo before she met Caruthers) took him aside to tell him about a “mother ship” with whom they talked about their cats communicated.
Bonnell recalled Caruthers saying his role was to “prepare the world because everyone who aligned himself with him would be saved before calamity struck… All of that made me say, ‘Well, you know, Scott, some people believe that Jesus Christ will come back into the world and save people.’ And he said, ‘Who do you think I am?'”
While Bonnell balked at the story, others were drawn into it. Owings Mills attorney David Pearl, who met Caruthers while doing legal work for Stringput, became company director. His legal partner, Richard Gershberg, befriended the Caruthers, as did their wives, Susan Pearl and Elaine Gershberg.

Gershberg’s sister Debra Hackerman worked for Strongput and then left her husband. She moved into Caruther’s house and later changed her name to Dulsa Naedek. Pearl and Gershberg moved their families from Owings Mills to Westminster, and they all began writing diaries of their daily thoughts, which they faxed to Caruthers, often expressing their intense devotion to him and a space-based organization called BDX (Beta Dominion Xenophilia). bring to ). A private investigator hired by Naedek’s ex-husband as part of a custody case later discovered many of the faxes during a search of Caruthers’ garbage.
Caruthers has always denied running a cult. He said the diary entries were attempts to help him write science fiction.
“As far as I know, cults are usually well funded,” he said in a 1999 interview. “You usually deal with problems, situations or problems – whatever you want to call them – differently than we deal with things. … We certainly do not have the power to harm anyone, nor do I wish to. And the reason is that there is no cult. There never was one.”
Others disagreed.
When Strongput went bust, most investors lost their money. But Caruthers and a handful of others, including Lashra, Pearl, and Naedek, ventured into other companies that made them paper rich for a while as stocks rose in value.
It was then that Caruthers met David Gable, one of the alleged targets of the assassination plot. Gable worked closely with Caruthers on transactions that later came under scrutiny by financial regulators, but eventually parted ways.

In a diary entry sent to Caruthers in June 1998, Naedek wrote about the fate that could befall anyone disloyal to the group.
Of her brother Richard Gershberg, who she said caused trouble for the group during a trip to the Bahamas, she wrote: “He showed no level of integrity or honesty, just unselfishness [sic] and personal needs, and all of it constantly.” Command put in the line of fire: If it was an IC (intelligence) operation, the second he left the beach on the rented jet ski, a BDX agent would have followed him, would have hit the right one Waited a moment and shot him in the head, leaving the body in the middle of the ocean.”

But to the outside observer, Caruthers and his fellows were quintessential suburbia, living on a quiet cul-de-sac in a two-story brick colonial and flying an American flag. That’s where Caruthers raised the idea of the murders in late August, state police said.
This led to a meeting at the house in the second week of September when Caruthers, Lashra, Naedek and Pearl allegedly spoke to Tabassi about the killings and gave him photos of the targets and other information.

Police said Lashra offered a gold bracelet set with diamonds and emeralds as a deposit on $110,000, which would be paid in shares.
Tabassi later returned the necklace, state police said, and went to the FBI. He also informed one of the objectives of the plan.
The suspects remained in detention last night and bail hearings are scheduled for today.
