Todd Kohlhepp was reported to South Carolina real estate officials in 2009, seven years before he confessed to multiple murders and kidnappings
Frightened neighbors of South Carolina serial killer Todd Kohlhepp complained about his worrying behavior years before police discovered bodies and a woman he was holding hostage on his property.
In 2009, concerned residents wrote to the state’s Department of Licensing to demand that Kohlhepp be fired from his job as a real estate agent after finding his Facebook account littered with vulgar posts about guns, sex and revenge.
“Something MUST be done to stop this lunatic before something terrible happens,” said one person.
Kohlhepp was arrested on November 3 on a 95-acre piece of land he owns near Woodruff after police heard beatings from a shipping container on the property.
Inside they found 30-year-old Kala Brown chained. She had been missing with her boyfriend for two months.
Kohlhepp, 45, who employed Brown to clean homes he sold and rented as a real estate agent, confessed to killing and burying three others, including Brown’s friend Charles Carver, others in the country.
On November 28, he admitted to an unsolved quadruple homicide at a motorsports store in 2003.
The 2009 complaints were investigated by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation, but they could find no evidence that he had violated real estate laws.
Kohlhepp obtained his real estate license in 2006 after applying and passing the exam.
He was forced to explain a previous kidnapping conviction, for which he served 15 years in prison, but was granted the license.
The charges stem from a 1986 incident involving a 14-year-old girl. Kohlhepp, who was 15 at the time, was convicted of raping her and holding her hostage in his bedroom after leading her to his home with his father’s gun.
Kohlhepp was arrested on November 3 after police discovered a missing woman chained in a shipping container on his property. He had been a real estate agent for three years when the complaints were made in 2009

In 2014 he bought the property from Woodruff. After Brown’s rescue, police found the bodies of her partner and another couple buried in shallow graves.
Carver and Brown have been missing since August 30, when they disappeared after leaving a friend’s house.
Meagan and Johnny Coxie disappeared in December 2015, four months after having a new baby. Their bodies were found with gunshot wounds on Kohlhepp’s land.
He is said to have shot the man in front of his wife and held her hostage for a week before murdering her too on Christmas Day.
He has also confessed to the murders of Brian Lucas, Scott Ponder, Beverly Guy and Chris Sherbert, who were shot dead outside Superbike Motorsports on November 3, 2003. The case was unsolved for years until Kohlhepp confessed last month.
On Thursday, Brown shed more light on the circumstances of her kidnapping and her boyfriend’s death in a lawsuit filed against the man.
She is suing him for unspecified damages for causing emotional distress, false imprisonment, assault and physical harm after being chained by the neck “like a dog” by his will for two months.

In court documents, she said Kohlhepp kidnapped her and her boyfriend after he discussed hiring them to clean one of the properties he rented as a real estate agent Aug. 31.
She said he murdered her boyfriend and locked her in the container that day.
Since her release, police have described the gruesome scene she encountered when she was rescued on November 3rd.
They also told how Kohlhepp allowed her to walk in the country and visit her dead boyfriend’s grave and how he only fed her once a day.
The man’s mother spoke out in his defense when his murders came to light last month, insisting he was “not a monster” despite his more than decade-long murder streak.
Regina Tague told CBS her son is acting after years of being a victim of bullying.
“Todd is not a monster. He’s not even close to it. He didn’t do it for fun. He did it because he was angry and hurt,” she said.

Disturbing video footage shows officers’ discovery of Brown in a dark metal storage container on Kohlhepp’s property near Woodruff. Officers walk past cases of bottled water and find Brown on makeshift bedding, wearing a long-sleeved shirt, sweatpants and flip-flops. She has a large chain around her neck. “My neck is up against the wall,” Brown tells officers.
An officer tells her, “We’ll get bolt cutters, honey.”
Soon, an officer asks her, “Where’s your buddy?” Referring to her friend Charles David Carver.
Brown tells them that Kohlhepp shot Carver three times in the chest and wrapped his body in a tarp.
She said Kohlhepp locked her in the container shortly afterwards. To Carver: “I never saw him again.”
Officers at the scene included the Spartanburg County sheriff’s deputy and at least one investigator from the Anderson Police Department, according to other records from the Independent Mail.
In a separate video last November, Kohlhepp spoke to investigators about killing four workers at Superbike Motorsports in Chesnee in 2003.
“I cleared this building in less than 30 seconds,” Kohlhepp said.
Brown’s video, footage of Kohlhepp, and other recordings were released in response to freedom of information requests from the Independent Mail, The Greenville News, and other media outlets. More than 250 exhibits related to the Kohlhepp case were released on Friday, including dozens of documents, crime scene photos and video footage.
Kohlhepp, 46, pleaded guilty May 26 to killing seven people upstate and chaining an Anderson woman alive in a storage container. In a Spartanburg courtroom, he was sentenced to seven consecutive life terms plus an additional 60 years for felonies including kidnapping and sexually assaulting his surviving victim, Brown.
The Greenville News and Independent Mail don’t normally name victims of sexual assault, but Brown has spoken candidly about her ordeal in a national television interview.
Kohlhepp, a real estate agent in Upstate for more than a decade, was arrested last November after investigators searching his 95-acre property near Woodruff heard Brown banging on the metal storage container where she had been held for more than two months was.
Brown and her boyfriend, Charles David Carver, disappeared from their Anderson home on August 31 and had gone to Kohlhepp’s land, believing they would help him clean and tidy it.
After Brown was found alive, Kohlhepp led investigators to a shallow grave on the same land where Carver’s body was buried. He also showed investigators where he buried the bodies of husband and wife Johnny and Meagan Coxie, who disappeared from Spartanburg in December 2015.
After Brown was found, Kohlhepp confessed to the Superbike Motorsports murders in Chesnee. The 2003 murders of superbike workers Scott Ponder, Beverly Guy, Brian Lucas and Chris Sherbert remained unsolved until Kohlhepp confessed to them last fall.
