It’s been a tough few years for everyone, but even more so for legendary Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper.
Kuip has had to deal with a cancer diagnosis that kept him away for periods of the 2021 season as he underwent chemotherapy. Then Kuiper’s wife Michelle died unexpectedly this off-season at the age of 64.
Kuiper spent the offseason away from the game and the dressing room, and did not travel to Arizona during spring training. But the beloved broadcaster was back for the Giants’ season-opening series this weekend, and it was like he never left.
Kuiper’s shout-out after the Giants’ walk-off win on Friday, in particular, caused chills to his broadcast partner Mike Krukow.
“Down the left field line is Ruf on the move,” Kuiper shouted as Darin Ruf made his way around the bases from the start. “Call is on the way! You will wave him in. Reputation is on the way! And this game is over!”

“The hair on the back of my neck just went up,” Krukow said Monday morning on KNBR. “It’s been so great because he comes to work and he’s just so happy. He told me, “I’ve never needed this game more than I do now,” and he didn’t make a game in spring training.
“You walk in and just like everyone else in baseball, the very first time you step onto the field or behind the mic you’re like, ‘I’ve got to prove to myself that I can do this one more time.’ And boy, he was spot on . He was spot on.”
“Even when he went to the funk side for three innings and funked, he came back with a big smile. He just loved everything on the weekend. So, hey, we had fun. Closing with Jon Miller after the game, we just sat there and giggled like little kids before the first word was said. it was so cool It was so much fun.”

Longtime broadcaster Duane Kuiper will return to the Giants booth in 2022, he said Wednesday morning on The Murph & Mac Show.
Kuiper, 71, is entering his 37th season as a commentator. He will be at Oracle Park on April 8 with broadcast partner Mike Krukow to kick off the Giants’ 2022 season.
Kuiper’s radio hit on Wednesday was his first public appearance since the death of his wife Michelle in February. He thanked everyone who sent congratulations to him and his family.
“It’s good to be back,” Kuiper said on KNBR. “It’s not such a bad idea to take some time off when you lose a loved one. That’s what I did and that’s what I do with spring training games. I have such great partners to bridge the gap.”
Last year Kuiper missed a significant part of the season after undergoing chemotherapy. The 13-time Emmy Award winner received an outpouring of support from Giants fans. One game he surprised Krukow in the cabin.

Later in the season, Kuiper and Krukow threw the ceremonial first pitch before Game 1 of the National League Division Series.
The beloved duo of Kruk and Kuip will voice the Giants for their 31st season together in 2022. They will call home games but not travel with the team, Kuiper said, giving former Giants Javier López and Shawn Estes more chances on the call. Kuiper said he and Krukow would announce 20 away games from the Bay Area studio.
Kuiper plans to head to Arizona for a three-day spring training session soon, he said. So far, a combination of Dave Flemming, Jon Miller and Krukow has called out the games, which have been broadcast on NBC Sports Bay Area.
