Soaking in the moment, Wiskus and USA men fifth in team gymnastics

TOKYO – Shane Wiskus will not bring back an Olympic medal to Minnesota. The US men’s gymnastics team finished fifth in the team finals at the Tokyo Games on Monday, the final competition for the former gopher in his first Olympics.

He was able to take something wonderful home with him. After Russia won gold, Wiskus stood in the middle of the floor at the Ariake Gymnastics Center and looked around the arena, memorizing the scene.

“I was just trying to soak it all up,” Wiskus said. “I just stood there as long as I could, really absorbing the atmosphere and enjoying that last moment.”

So did his teammates, although the US men finished fifth at the Summer Games for the third straight season. They are far from making it onto the podium in Tokyo, but they are not as technically advanced as Russia, Japan and China, who took gold, silver and bronze.

“It was an amazing experience. I felt like I did my part to help the team the best I could. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and very hungry to come back for the next games.” Shane Wiskus

These three nations put up a thrilling battle with Russia taking the crown in their final routine. Led by reigning all-around world champion Nikita Nagornyy, the Russians shot up a three-point lead after the fourth round. China lowered the range to 0.640 before entering the final rotation with Japan also within striking distance.

Daiki Hashimoto mastered his high bar routine to propel Japan to the top, but Nagornyy had the final say. His action-packed floor routine earned Russia a total of 262,500 and beat Japan by 0.103 points for their first Olympic team gold since 1996.

The Americans finished fourth with one event to go. They faltered on the floor exercise and finished with a total of 254,594, behind Britain’s 255,760. For three-time Olympian Sam Mikulak, who competed in his last few games, the overall experience was more important than final placement.

“We took to the streets with a lot of struggle, a lot of heart and a lot of difficult pressure situations,” said Mikulak. “Nobody else made mistakes, so that didn’t really open the door for us to push in there.

“We’re just glad we had a great show. We had fun throughout the process. That is more than one could wish for.”

Mikulak said the US “knew what they were struggling with in the top three countries.” The results from Saturday’s qualifying round were not carried over to the finals, but they showed the Americans just how far the Americans needed to go through. While just 0.036 points separated first-place Japan from third-place Russia, the US were 5.184 points behind the Russians.

The U.S. men have not won an Olympic medal in team competition since 2008, when they took bronze, and have finished twice at the last two World Championships. The pandemic hampered their efforts to catch up.

Brett McClure, USA Gymnastics’ high-performance director for the men’s program, said Russia, China and Japan immediately created team bubbles to train uninterrupted when the COVID-19 shutdowns began. In the US, many athletes didn’t have a place to train for long periods of time when gyms, universities, and other facilities were closed.

Americans came to the Olympics simply to do their best. Wiskus competed in four of six events in the finals, posting a team-high 14.166 on rings. In the fourth rotation, his outstanding routine on parallel bars helped propel USA from sixth to fourth place.

Coming to the floor exercise, they were unlikely to deserve a medal, but they didn’t relax. “Even on the last rotation, we made it big,” Wiskus said. “You treat every exercise like it’s a gold medal.”

Yul Moldauer started the Americans with a 14.366, followed by Wiskus’ 13.466. Mikulak struggled with his routine, with a fall and some shaky landings.

Several members of the US team have even more competition. Mikulak and Brody Malone are in the all-around final on Wednesday. Finalists from each event included Mikulak (parallel bars), Malone (high bar), Moldauer (floor exercise) and Alec Yoder (pommel horse).

Mikulak will retire after the Games but he hopes his teammates can take USA closer to an Olympic medal in the future. Wiskus is hoping to return to the Olympics in 2024, standing on a different competitive floor and basking in the sun for the moment.

“It was an incredible experience,” he said. “I felt like I did my part to help the team as much as I could. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and very hungry to come back for the next games.”
