What if a Bear Took an N.B.A. Star’s Place Shea Serrano Has an Answer

Sportswriter and virtual cheerleader for the San Antonio Spurs, Shea Serrano made a name for himself by finding humor in the mundane on his Twitter feed. He has 169,000 followers and growing. But what really got him fame was 2015’s best-selling The Rap Year Book, a laughable year-after-year controversy over hip-hop’s best songs. Now he’s back with another highly anticipated illustrated book, Basketball (and Other Things): A Collection of Questions Asked, Answered, Illustrated, which will be released Tuesday. Example question: “If Karl Malone and a bear swapped places for a season in 1997, who would be more successful?”

What surprised you the most to find out?

I think what surprised me the most was how good some of the players I had never thought of actually were. For example (the Houston Rockets Center) Hakeem Olajuwon, who you always hear about and is always mentioned as one of the greatest of all time. I had no idea how good he really was. He had a two-year run where he was just unstoppable, that was the two years the Rockets won the championship.

Did you have any tire dreams growing up?

I thought I would play for Spurs through high school. Then I stopped growing. I’m only 5ft 7 and at the time I thought that was tall. That’s pretty big for a Mexican. For example, on our high school basketball team, we had a boy or two who could dip in and that was it. Everyone else played below the rim. So I didn’t feel out of place. I ended up going to college and playing on a college basketball team and it was 15 levels more intense, everyone was so much bigger. All were faster and stronger. I thought, “I’ll never be in the NBA.”

Shea Serrano is an American author, journalist, and former teacher. He is best known for his work with sports and pop culture websites The Ringer and Grantland, and for his books, including The Rap Year Book, Basketball (and Other Things), and Movies (and Other Things), all of which were best-sellers of the New York Times #1. Writing about Serrano for GQ, Chris Gayomali said, “If you drew a triple Venn diagram of hoops, trunk punches, and jokes made at the expense of J. Cole, the Grantland author would be.” Shea Serrano is perfect for you. he’s probably wearing a Tim Duncan jersey.”[3] Serrano’s activities and humor on Twitter have garnered him a loyal following, nicknamed the FOH Army.

Early life

Serrano was born in San Antonio, Texas and grew up in the Valley Hi neighborhood.[4] He is Mexican American. He graduated from Sam Houston State University,[4] where he began as a criminal justice major but eventually earned a degree in psychology. He was also in Omega Delta Phi.[5]

After graduating from college, Serrano moved to Houston, where he worked in construction before becoming a middle school science teacher.[4] He taught 8th grade science for nine years at a Title 1 school in Houston.[6]

Career

journalism

Serrano began writing in 2007 to supplement his family’s income when his wife, who was pregnant with twins, was put on bed rest.[7] After briefly writing for the Near Northwest Banner, Serrano freelanced for the Houston Press. He wrote mostly about hip-hop after noticing that despite Houston being a cornerstone of Southern rap music, the majority of writers only wrote about rock music.[3]

Serrano’s first work to garner national attention was his Houston Press piece about the ban of rapper Trae tha Truth from a Houston radio station and the rapper’s subsequent lawsuit against the station. This article earned him a spot in the Houston Press’s sister publication, LA Weekly. Serrano continued to garner national attention with his plays about his children and stories about the songs played at his prom[9] and birthday party.[10] While there, he wrote a humorous article about having sex with his wife while listening to Drake.[11] Grantland author Molly Lambert saw the article and passed it on to her editors, who then invited Serrano to freelance for them. His first play was about gift shopping with rapper 2 Chainz. Serrano joined the full-time Grantland staff in July 2015.

In July 2016, Serrano joined Bill Simmons’ new entertainment platform The Ringer with much of the Grantland team.[12]

Serrano has also written for GQ, ESPN, LA Weekly, XXL, Rolling Stone, MTV, and Vice.[6]

Books

Serrano’s first book, Bun B’s Rap Coloring and Activity Book, was released on September 17, 2013. The book consists of coloring and activity pages based on popular rappers. The work was a collaboration with Houston rapper Bun B, although Serrano wrote and illustrated the book himself.

Serrano’s second book, The Rap Year Book: The Most Important Rap Song From Every Year Since 1979, Discussed, Debated, and Deconstructed, was published by Abrams Image on October 13, 2015. It soon appeared on the New York Times Best Sellers list in the Advice, How-to, and Miscellaneous[13] categories and in the Culture[14] category. In March 2016, the book was selected for a documentary series.[15] In September 2016, Billboard listed the book as one of the 100 Greatest Music Books of All Time.

Serrano’s third book, Basketball (and Other Things), was released in October 2017. Illustrator Arturo Torres, Serrano’s collaborator on The Rap Year Book, also illustrated Basketball (and Other Things).[16] It debuted at number two on The New York Times Best Seller list in the Advice, How-to, and Miscellaneous categories.[13] In November 2017, it rose to number one on The New York Times Best Seller list in the Sports and Fitness category.[17] On December 31, 2017, former US President Barack Obama mentioned basketball (And Other Things) in a Facebook post describing his favorite books of the year.[18]

Serrano’s fourth book, Movies (And Other Things), was released in October 2019 and became his third consecutive number one bestseller on the New York Times Best Seller list.[19][20][21]

TV

In addition to the documentary film project based on The Rap Year Book, Serrano also has a sitcom in development. In October 2017, ABC Studios ordered a pilot for the show, written by Serrano and produced by Serrano and Michael Schur. The Hollywood Reporter described the project as a “one-camera comedy … based on Serrano’s life growing up in a family of five uncles, each with different perspectives on manhood.”[22] Serrano wrote on Twitter that he ” got tired of waiting for more Mexicans to be on TV, so I asked [Schur] to help me make a family sitcom for ABC about them.”[23]

publication

In 2020, Serrano founded a publishing company called Halfway Books, operated from his Gumroad website.[24] He had previously published two collections of illustrated essays on the site, on the television shows The Office (titled “Conference Room Five Minutes”) and Scrubs (“Where Do You Think We Are?”).[24][25] These collections, continuing his collaboration with Torres, have been released as PDFs. Halfway Books’ first release was also digital, a short story by Serrano available in PDF or audiobook.[24] “Post: A Short Story of No Consequence at All” was published on July 15, 2020.[24]

The next Halfway Books is a series of five long-form commissioned essays on an author’s choice of hip-hop album, beginning with Taylor Crumpton’s “Taylor Crumpton Considers Big Tuck’s Purple Hulk” on December 1, 2020.[26] To support aspiring writers, Serrano offered $3,000 grants and a month-long mentorship, saying, “Too often, talented writers are pushed out of the game because they can’t afford, or don’t want to, do an unpaid internship somewhere.” write somewhere for free for a few months to build a portfolio.”[24] The series’ writers retain the rights to their work and receive a fully designed digital version of their essay and placement on Serrano’s website.[24] The sales from Post helped fund the $20,000 Serrano put into the program, and he said it motivated him to write more short stories: “If I just have to write a short story and sell it, I can use the money I’ll do this other cool thing with it, that’s reason enough to do it again.”[24]

Social media and other projects

Serrano has a passionate following on his active Twitter feed, where “office hours are almost always open. He courts daily on matters ranging from basketball to Taco Bell and Young Thug to parenthood and the injustices of unpaid content creation… From time to time, Serrano will tweet his email address for everyone to seek his advice ask how he can make it as a writer.”[27] The Verge called the community he created in this way a “Utopia on Twitter”;[27] GOOD Magazine called him “Our New Favorite Internet hero.”[28]

On March 20, 2016, Serrano announced a weekly newsletter, “Basketball (And Other Things)”, to appear every Tuesday, focused on the National Basketball Association. The newsletter features reflections by Serrano and illustrations by Torres. The inaugural issue featured NBA players in scenes from popular films, beginning with Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green in a scene from the 1987 film Over the Top. Within weeks, the newsletter had reached over 30,000 subscribers. The newsletter is published free of charge, although Serrano and Torres allowed donating twice. They used the donations to make contributions to charities including Genesis Women’s Shelter, Kids’ Meals, Operation Turkey and more. In total, they donated about $10,000 via newsletter donations.

Serrano’s Twitter feed has also spawned sizeable charitable donations. On December 21, 2016, Serrano and his Twitter followers, colloquially known as the FOH ARMY, teamed up to tip a parking lot attendant who had helped Serrano locate his car at an airport $3,000.[29] They jokingly referred to it as the Radelle Christmas Miracle.[30] On March 9, 2017, Serrano and company donated $12,539.87 to Planned Parenthood in recognition of International Women’s Day.[31] On March 27, 2017, Serrano again mobilized the FOH ARMY, this time to help a former student fund a trip to Turkey she hoped to take to teach English to children there. She had set a goal of $3700 for her Go Fund Me page; Serrano and his Twitter followers raised nearly $4,500 in less than an hour.[32] On August 17, 2017, Serrano and the FOH ARMY partnered to fund several teachers’ Donors Choose pages designed to help them start the school year off right, often completing the requested funding in minutes;[33] two Days later, the group raised over $10,700 to support an LGBTQ youth center in San Antonio, raising the money in less than seven hours.[34] On August 31, 2017, Serrano invited Twitter followers to join him in a “Fuck Hurricane Harvey” fundraiser to support relief work in Houston, with Serrano donating $200 to kickstart the effort.
