FBI investigating gang hit on Chicago rapper who taunted rivals with his music

Cedron Doles was a controversial South Side rapper with alleged ties to a Black P-Stone gang faction known as the Black Mobb, who earned a following in Chicago’s drill music scene through lyrics mocking gang rivals, some of whom were murdered .
“Whoever is dead or alive, f— the opps, b—-!” Doles, who went by the name Shootashellz, rapped in a music video posted to YouTube in April 2017.

The video, titled “Death of 150,” was about the Black Mobb’s longstanding feud with rival Stone faction No Limit, also known as No Limit 150.
About three months later, in the township of Auburn Gresham, 21-year-old Doles was about to get into his car when three men got out of a white Nissan Altima on that July morning and opened fire. Shot several times in the head and body, he collapsed in the street, mortally wounded.

Doles’ violent death drew little attention except on some rap music websites, just one of 13 people shot that day in Chicago in July 2017, another fatally. However, his brazen killings appear to be typical of the gang violence plaguing Chicago — much of which was retaliatory, sometimes the result of petty disputes fueled over social media between rivals from even the same gangs but different factions, authorities say.

Records recently unsealed in federal court show that two months before Doles was killed, the FBI joined forces with Chicago police to investigate years of back-and-forth violence between Black Mobb and No Limit.
The filing sought permission from the court to search the contents of an iPhone 7 Plus recovered from his pants pocket about a year after Doles’ murder.
In the year and a half since then, no charges have been brought in connection with the Doles killing. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

According to court records unsealed last month, witnesses said they saw Doles exit an apartment on Block 8100 of South Paulina Street with another person at around 9:30 a.m. on July 10, 2017.
As Doles was about to get into his car down the block on 82nd Street, the three assailants—the files didn’t say whether they happened to be passing the Altima or were lying in wait—approached and fired 43 shots.

The three sped away south on Paulina at high speed, the FBI said.
“Based on my education and experience, and the education and experience of other law enforcement officials I’ve spoken to about this, I believe the Doles murder was a deliberate effort,” FBI Special Agent Ian Hallenius wrote in the affidavit in which he applied for a search warrant on Doles’ cell phone.

Several months before his death, Doles could be heard online in the “Death of 150” music video holding what the FBI said appeared to be a handgun.
In court filings, the FBI said Doles and others made “numerous threatening threats” against No Limit in the song, including three murdered members of the gang.
“Tell Roc, Kobe, Fazo you’ll see them soon,” Doles tapped.

– Jamal Harris, 19, who was killed in February 2012 in a shooting outside a liquor store in the South Shore community that also killed another man and wounded five teenagers.
— Jacobi Herring, 21, was fatally shot in August 2013 on East 79th Street and South Yates Boulevard, an area known to residents as “Terror Town” for its relentless gun violence and gang activity. The Tribune featured Hering earlier that year in a story about a police department’s strategy of attempting to target primarily gang members identified by a computerized formula as most vulnerable to gun violence. He was on that list at the time of his assassination.
– Fazon Robinson, 18, was gunned down along 79th Street in 2010.
Less than a month before Doles was fatally shot, he told a hip-hop video blogger about the violence in his South Side neighborhood and how retaliatory shootings won’t stop until enemies try to settle their differences.
“As long as mother —– is still shooting, this will never end,” Doles said in the video interview posted on YouTube.
