On Sunday’s episode of 60 Minutes, Lady Gaga spoke to Anderson Cooper about recently appearing with legendary crooner Tony Bennett, who is battling an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, and the emotional moment he saw her name appear for the first time “in a long time” on the stage said.
Lady Gaga joined Bennett onstage for two shows at Radio City Music Hall in August in honor of his 95th birthday and possibly his final performance in front of an audience. Bennett and Lady Gaga released an album in 2014 entitled Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek Live! Bennett’s rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the singer’s second album with Lady Gaga, Love for Sale, will be his last studio album and he will not resume his touring schedule.
Bennett and his family announced in February that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016.
In her conversation with Cooper, Lady Gaga said that Bennett did not call her by her name during rehearsals before the shows. She explained, “For the first few weeks I’ve seen Tony since COVID he called me ‘honey’ but I wasn’t sure he knew who I was.”
The “Born This Way” singer explained that since the singer’s brain condition affects memory, she found new ways to connect with Bennett during rehearsals by asking simple questions. She says she would ask him if he would like to practice one of his songs and he would easily answer. “When that music plays [snaps fingers], something happens to him,” she said. “He knows exactly what he’s doing and what’s really important to me is making sure I’m not in his way.”
But on the day of the performance, Bennett surprised Lady Gaga in a sentimental moment. 60 Minutes showed a clip of Bennett introducing Lady Gaga by name as she appeared on stage. “That was the first time Tony had said my name in a long time,” she recalled. “I had to keep it together because we had a sold out show and I have a job to do. But I’ll tell you, when I walked up on stage and he said, “That’s Lady Gaga,” my friend saw me. It was very special.”
When it was Bennett’s time to step off the stage, Lady Gaga approached him and said, “‘Mr. Bennett, I’d be honored to escort you off stage.” And he said, “Okay.” And I did. And just being the woman who gets to take him backstage is enough for me.”
Lady Gaga told Cooper that Bennett’s latest performance wasn’t a “sad story” but “emotional.” “It’s hard to see someone change,” she said. “I think what’s beautiful and challenging about that is to see how it affects him in a way, but to see how it doesn’t affect his talent. I think he really pushed through to give the world the gift that things can change and you can still be great.”
Bennett’s wife, Susan, was also interviewed for the segment and confirmed that her husband still recognizes her and his children. “We are blessed in many ways. He’s very cute,” she said. She also told Cooper that Bennett was unaware of his diagnosis (“He doesn’t know he has it,” she said), but Bennett still knew the lyrics to his songs.
