Investigator Escaped killer Barnes is street-smart, cold-blooded

New details are emerging about a New Orleans woman convicted of manslaughter who escaped Tuesday from the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel.

According to former NOPD homicide detective Ronald Ruiz, Keana Barnes is a cold, soulless killer.

“She’s very smart,” Ruiz told us. “If she has to, she will do what she has to do to get what she needs done.”

Ruiz first met Barnes in 2003 while she was investigating the murder of Perry Jennings Jr. “While Perry was asleep, she took a gun, which we still believe belongs to Perry, wrapped it in a pillowcase as a silencer, and ended up shooting Mr. Jennings in the head,” Ruiz explained.

At the time, Barnes was on bail for another murder, for which she was eventually convicted.

Immediately after Jennings was killed in Algiers, Barnes fled to Mexico. She was arrested there a short time later. She was imprisoned at St. Gabriel.

But early Tuesday morning, Barnes broke out of prison. “I imagine from the start she had something planned to get out,” Ruiz commented.

Barnes’ ex-husband, Clinton Lewis Jr., says he’s not surprised. “You can handcuff her and throw her in a cell, but the bottom line is she’s out of there as soon as you turn around,” Lewis said.

Though retired, Ruiz is now helping the US Marshals in their search for Barnes. Ruiz said, “She’s capable of killing again and if she stays out there there’s a chance someone will get killed.”

Lewis hopes Barnes isn’t after him. He claims she tried to kill him once before while they were married and he says she wasn’t happy that he divorced her. He’s moved to a new town and says he knows how to protect himself just in case.

“There are wolves that look like dogs, but they’re still wolves, and that’s what we’re dealing with here. We’re dealing with Keana, and she’s a wolf,” Lewis said.

Ruiz believes Barnes is traveling south of the border and says: “She has contacts in Mexico. I have provided all the information I have to the Marshal Service of the person she may be going to. But ultimately I think that’s the direction she’s going.”

Barnes’ ex-husband says if she gets caught, she won’t go back voluntarily.

Barnes shaved his head about a week before they escaped. If you see her or know her whereabouts, call 911.

Killer who escaped women’s prison nabbed on Los Angeles’ Skid Row

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

A convicted murderer who made the US Marshals’ Most Wanted Fugitives list after escaping from a Louisiana women’s prison has been caught on Los Angeles’ Skid Row after nearly three months on the run.

Keana Barnes, 33, escaped from a women’s prison in St Gabriel on New Year’s Day and was added to the Most Wanted list 11 days ago. Two LAPD officers caught her Monday in the grim neighborhood after first giving her a loitering ticket.

According to the U.S. Marshals Office, one of the officers became suspicious after Barnes used a false name. While she was taken to a police station, Barnes confessed to escaping prison and police officers were able to confirm her identity after taking fingerprints, ending a nationwide search by multiple agencies.

“The arrest of Keana Barnes bodes well for the safety of our citizens,” U.S. Marshal Kevin Harrison said in a statement released by the Louisiana Middle District Office. “Movies often portray escaping the law as a glamorous, carefree adventure — the truth is, nothing gets more stressful. I have no doubt that the pressure exerted by the US Marshals made life extremely difficult for her from the minute she ran to the minute she was caught.”

Barnes was serving a 25-year sentence at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for shooting Perry Jennings Jr. in March 2003 while he slept in a New Orleans apartment. When she escaped, Barnes was awaiting trial for allegedly stabbing another victim a year before Jennings was murdered. At her trial, Barnes had accepted a plea deal that reduced two counts of murder to manslaughter.

Details of Barnes’ escape were not available, although the Marshals Office said her flight was discovered when prison guards found a broken window in her cell.

The former fugitive has a long criminal record dating back to 1999, with prior convictions for aggravated assault, assault, theft and manslaughter.

“An extremely violent criminal history has put Barnes on our 15 Most Wanted list,” William D. Snelson, deputy director of investigative operations, said in a written statement. “Thanks to the tenacity of our detectives and the quick action of the Los Angeles Police Department, law enforcement has pulled another dangerous fugitive off the streets.”

Barnes is still being held in Los Angeles and is scheduled to appear before a federal judge on Wednesday.
