Melissa Lantsman MP is a Canadian politician and public relations executive who serves as Member of Parliament for Thornhill in the House of Commons of Canada. As a member of the Conservative Party of Canada, she was elected in the 2021 Canadian federal election.[1] She is the first LGBTQ woman and Jew ever to be elected Conservative MP.[2]

Lantsman previously worked as a communications adviser to several cabinet members in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s 28th Canadian ministry. She was Senior Advisor to the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and its primary spokesperson in the 2018 Ontario provincial election.[3] Lantsman was previously the national vice president of public affairs at Enterprise Canada, a strategic communications firm.[4]

In 2020, following the departure of Peter Kent from Parliament, Lantsman announced her intention to seek the Conservative federal nomination at Thornhill. She defeated incumbent Progressive Conservative provincial MP Gila Martov to become the Equestrian Conservative candidate on March 17, 2021.

She was elected to Parliament on September 20, 2021 and sworn into office on October 28. Since November of the same year she has been Shadow Minister for Transport in the opposition shadow cabinet of Erin O’Toole.

Lantsman was elected Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport and Infrastructure.

As a youth, Lantsman volunteered for Conservative Party candidates in local elections. During the 2008 Canadian federal election, she was appointed senior communications adviser with the party forming a minority government. She was then appointed Director of Communications at the State Department from 2008 to 2011 under Ministers Lawrence Cannon and John Baird. From 2011 to 2012 she was Communications Director for the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada and accompanied Prime Minister Stephen Harper on visits to the country and abroad.

After a brief stint at The Coca-Cola Company as senior public affairs adviser, Lantsman returned to government as Treasury Department communications director under Joe Oliver. Following the defeat of the Harper government in Canada’s 2015 federal election, Lantsman returned to the private sector as senior director for CIBC Capital Markets.

I’ve never felt less, except today when the Prime Minister accused me of standing with swastikas. I think he owes me. I want an apology.”[12] Trudeau did not respond to Lantsman’s request.[13]
