The series, called “Dix Pour Cent” (“Ten Percent”) in its native France, first came to my attention through word of mouth a few summers ago when the first two seasons were available. It quickly became clear that this was a series with my name, handwritten and outlined in gold, presented on a silver bowl. Set in a Parisian talent agency, it’s salted “Larry Sanders Show” manner with real-life French screen stars including Isabelle Adjani, Juliette Binoche, Fabrice Luchini, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jean Reno (and in the latest season, American Sigourney Weaver), which plays tongue-in-cheek versions of itself and was filmed on actual Parisian locations. And while it’s obviously not entirely original – it’s a workplace comedy in more than one television tradition – it’s also different in that one language is different from the other, even if a sentence says the same thing.
Every country has its own way of doing things, the sum of its cultural history. Cross-border influences exist, of course, but they’re always filtered through a local lens, which is why Jacques Demy’s The Young Girls of Rochefort, for example, pays homage to American musicals (even Gene Kelly is in it). , it looks or plays nothing like an American musical; When French directors hire American noir, it comes out as Breathless or Shoot the Piano Player. (It’s definitely a hit.) The fourth season was made without Herrero — it went for various stated reasons, including the need to reset and clash with Besnehard over the controls. (Another influence of American television on Herrero is her belief that on television the author is the author.) But the ship makes port safely.
The French film can be valuable or quirky, and there are a few deliberately cinematic passages in season four — a silent “Iris Out” when a character clicks its heels, a dance sequence — but naturalism is the guiding principle, in the performance and Production. Some things that set Call My Agent apart from its American cousins are certainly technical: a choice of lenses, the way characters frame themselves so you feel like you’re in the scene, instead of looking through a window at a distance.
