I’ve been really contemplating whether or not I want to discuss the recent Tiger Woods drama.
It’s been a grueling few weeks watching his idealistic life unravel before our eyes, not that I have the slightest sympathy for the guy. It’s like I really don’t care and get tired of hearing about it.
I’ve spoken before about fraud and my personal experience with it, but it’s difficult to summarize such a widespread and problematic subject in just a page or two, or in relation to just a single person or entity, and with all the tiger talk surrounding the Treating water dispensers is definitely on the minds of many people.
Obviously some very bad decisions led to what some are now calling Tiger’s downfall and after seeing photos of the chicks he cheated with I have to agree.
His first mistake (well, not the first) was trying to avoid getting all of this out in the media. It failed miserably and made him look like a complete bastard.
No longer thinking that we could lose our beloved tiger in a bizarre car accident, I scoffed at every statement he made to try to cover his dirty tracks. He doesn’t seem like an idiot, but did he really have the impression that this wasn’t going to come out?
The best golfer in the world, recognized everywhere. He can’t go shopping without a million people recognizing him. What would make him think he could sneak around with nasty looking party girls and still fly under the radar?
So what do I know; maybe he’s stupid.
I hate to say it, but Lettermen got it right. As his sex scandal began to unravel, Dave made what I can only imagine an intelligent decision to clear things up and then start making fun of himself. This story was almost dead in the water as soon as it broke because he wasn’t denying anything or trying to hide anything.
For some reason, people tend to give you a little credit even when they despise you for what you’ve done. Tiger’s PR people have to take their cues from Letterman’s book.
That doesn’t mean the same is true for the rest of us.
Rather than inundate readers with more Tiger news, I figured we already know that people cheat, but what exactly drives a person, even a person who seems to have everything, to cheat?
I recently came across a book called The Manual by Steve Santagati, the self-proclaimed bad boy and talk show regular.
Santagati has made a career out of the idea that men are programmed to cheat and that women make tons of mistakes that actually cause men to betray them. (Not exactly uplifting news.)
Santagati is handsome and charming, he looks like he just stepped out of the Brawny paper towel commercial, and as much as I shudder to admit it, on some occasions he seems to know a little what he’s talking about. He’s not an idiot. He’s actually a very intelligent guy, but the topics he considers himself an expert on make him an unlikable character despite his charisma. He knows what he’s talking about because he supposedly lives it, or as he puts it: “Who knows more about crime than a criminal.”
To a certain extent that may be true. However, he was never married and, by the sound of it, rarely had long-term committed relationships. Much of the information he uses comes from serial dating experiences and the experiences of the people who come to him for advice.
He claims that women find a man, get a ring, get married and immediately cut their hair really short, gain weight and stop having sex.
Women cheat on men by letting themselves go and not providing their boyfriend or husband with enough thrills to keep them from acting out their fantasies with other women.
These are such gross generalizations about women and the stereotypical relationships that we see on today’s sitcoms. It’s that simple – just another nagging housewife who spends the day eating candy and the night refusing to have sex with her husband.
We women are just waiting to tie up a guy so we can stop pretending we like sex, stop shaving our legs and start eating carbs again. Is this really what guys think!? Are there women like that out there!?
Sure, but there are plenty of wives and girlfriends out there who don’t fit his mold, and plenty of men who don’t jump on every boob that comes by.
It’s wise to have tools and information when navigating relationships, whether it’s friendship, commitment, or marriage, but I think Santagati overlooks some things in his issues with women, cheating, and relationships in general.
Sometimes love keeps people together. Sometimes commitment to someone means more than sex. And a lot of times, people really, really love the person, not just how they look. Imagine that!!
This ex-model, Playboy thinks that looks are everything and that sex is the only glue that holds a relationship together. I’m not naive. Sex is definitely an important piece, but it’s not the only piece. If I can’t have a conversation, a laugh, or a relationship with someone, I’ll walk, no matter how great they are in bed.
Santagati says what women don’t want to hear, and sometimes he’s right, but be careful. The benefit of his book is that you hear the information straight from the horse’s mouth.
The downside is you’re listening to the scruffy stallion in the stable. If you dare, Santagati offers some relationship advice on his website, as well as an email address where you can send questions about your personal relationship problems, allegedly directly to Steve Santagati himself. His book is a New York Times bestseller, and maybe you’ll learn something new by reading The Manual.
I don’t believe for a second that every man (or woman) is a dog just waiting for an opportunity to cheat. There are these people out there, but I think they’re in the minority at the moment.
I also don’t think “once a cheater is always a cheater”.
Some people walk away from cheating almost feeling like it’s their right, like they’re entitled to it. There’s no such thing as guilt, and typically these bottom feeders find ways to blame their significant other for their own lack of self-control. These people will cheat again.
Other people leave a betrayal situation with nothing but guilt and regret for what they did and a belief that they would never hurt another person in the way they did before.
It’s not just rock stars and pro athletes who cheat. You know more people than you think who have scammed or been scammed.
I’m always a bit shocked when I hear about a couple I know breaking up because of infidelity. It’s never pleasant to hear about, sometimes the pain is transferable to the group of friends and part of you feels personally betrayed.
However, I’m never overwhelmed when I hear a celebrity is cheating or has been scammed.
We all need to take a big Hollywood step back and realize that watching people on TV doesn’t mean you know them personally. They engage in drama; it is their currency. You must question those who take full advantage of the public spotlight, only to weep badly when the leaks of their personal lives are made public.
I don’t know exactly why people cheat. I don’t think there is a single, simple reason that applies universally to all cases of infidelity. A lot happens behind closed doors and it is almost impossible to get a clear picture of the relationships of others.
Maybe Tiger’s wife is a total psychopath, maybe they haven’t been happy in years, and maybe Tiger just has a thing for racy cocktail waitresses.
We’ll probably never know.
