Stu Lantz is an American former basketball player who is a television commentator for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
He attended high school in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He later graduated from the University of Nebraska (1968). There Stu played for the University of Nebraska and was drafted in 1968 in the third round by the San Diego Rockets.
Lantz also played with the Lakers but retired in 1977 due to a recurring back injury. He also played in the National Basketball Association from 1968 to 1976. Shortly after attending the University of Nebraska, Stu was drafted by the San Diego Rockets in the third round of the 1968 NBA Draft.
He was also drafted by the Oakland Oaks in the 1968 ABA draft. He had previously been the Lakers’ shadowing expert since 1987 and passed the receiver to Chick Hearn, Paul Sunderland, Joel Meyers and now Bill Macdonald.

Lantz Makes Most of Time Between the Dribble-Drives
Working with Chick Hearn is like taking Brooke Shields to a college dance. Nobody will notice you.
So in case you haven’t noticed, the person working alongside Hearn on Laker television shows and programs this season is Stu Lantz, 41. If you’ve been paying close attention, you might have noticed that Lantz sometimes snorts a few words may say.
And if you were paying really close attention, you might have noticed that he says more than just “That’s right, Chick” and that he offers some insight.
But if you haven’t noticed, Lantz will probably understand. He has spent most of his life trying to go unnoticed.
He is from Uniontown, Pennsylvania, has a population of 14,500 and played basketball in Nebraska. In football-mad Nebraska, it’s hard for a basketball player to get noticed.

Still, the then-San Diego Rockets took notice of Lantz and made him a third-round draft pick in 1968. He played four seasons for the Rockets, three in San Diego and one after the team moved to Houston. His best season was 1970–71 when he averaged 20.6 points per game.
He played two seasons for the Detroit Pistons and was then fired. As a free agent, he then moved on to New Orleans jazz, where a colleague named Pete Maravich drew the most attention.
After a few months, the Jazz Lantz traded to the Lakers. But maybe you didn’t even notice him then. He was on the 1974-75 team that went 30-52 and missed the playoffs. He played behind guards Gail Goodrich and Lucius Allen, who averaged 22.6 and 19.5 points per game, respectively. Lantz average 9.3.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar came on the next season and the team improved to 40-42. But Lantz only averaged 4.7 points.
Lantz sat out the next season with a back injury. Then he retired from basketball.

About not having a lot of airtime, Lantz said, “If we just did pure TV, I’d have more time to talk. But we’re also talking to a radio audience, and Chick has to provide an image for the audience. I realize it.”
Lantz said he had nothing to complain about. “I work with the best speaker in the business and for the best team in the business,” he said. “You can’t do much better than that.”

“He has the ability to analyze any situation faster and better than anyone I’ve ever heard,” Hearn said.
Hearn, perhaps using an imaginary gauge, added, “I think Stu really excelled last season and he’s 35% better than that this year.”

Lantz also praises Hearn, but this is a partnership that’s had a few bumps along the way. Hearn can be like an eccentric uncle who is argumentative and stubborn at times, but you know he’s soft inside and that’s why you love him anyway.
In the end, the two are almost like father and son. Their little feuds never last long. It always works when washing.

Hearn says there’s never been a serious rift, and if it sounds like they’re arguing on air, they really aren’t.
“We may disagree on some things, but most of the time we just have two points of view,” he said.
Lantz was never afraid to correct Hearn, but Hearn says he never confronted Lantz off the air about being corrected.
“I would never do that, ever,” Hearn said. “I have too much respect for him and his knowledge of the game. What we both want is to give viewers and listeners as accurate a message as possible.”
Since Hearn’s return, the two are getting along as well, if not better than ever. One reason is that their relationship has probably never been better.
As Hearn recovered, Lantz called regularly.
“No one called anymore,” Hearn said. “And we still talk on the phone all the time. If we’re watching a playoff game on TV and one of us notices something, we’ll call the other.
“We have a very harmonious relationship.”
The beginning
It was Hearn who recommended that the Lakers hire Lantz to replace Keith Erickson, who had been Hearn’s broadcast partner before moving on after the 1986-87 season.
Lantz, a basketball star in Nebraska, played the final three seasons of his nine-year NBA career with the Lakers. It’s been an uneventful three seasons – the last being spent on the injured list.
“I certainly wasn’t hired by the Lakers to be a broadcaster because of my name,” Lantz said.
After retiring as a player in 1977, Lantz, who wanted to be an elementary school teacher, tried his hand at radio instead. At the time, Hearn was playing basketball in Nevada Las Vegas when his schedule permitted, and Lantz was hired by packager Dick Manoogian to work with Hearn on some street games.
“I was very impressed and told Stu we could call him if there was ever a vacancy,” Hearn said.
When there was an opening, Hearn called. And Lantz got the job.
Immediately more outspoken than some of his predecessors, he did more than say, “That’s right, chick.”
Fox Sports Net Laker Producer Jerry Romano said of Lantz, “He’s gotten better and better with each passing year and he’s the ultimate team player who will do anything that’s asked of him.”
Hearn and Lantz are collaborating with two producers – Channel 9’s Romano and Susan Stratton.
Romano, who first met Hearn when he was stage manager for the old Bowling for Dollars shows on Channel 5 in the early 1970s, has been producing the Laker cable television shows since 1985 when Prime Ticket, the forerunner of Fox Sports Net, was started.
“Chick is like a father to me, and I like Stu as well,” Romano said.
Stratton, who has been involved with Laker television shows since 1977, said, “Stu is just a wonderful, wonderful person who is kind to everyone. And he is so resilient that he can handle any situation. He never loses his composure or coolness.”
Lantz, who lives in San Diego, has been married to college sweetheart Linda for 36 years and is the father of three children, Todd, 34, Kristin, 30, and Shane, 27. San Diego’s Madison High, but the Lantzes plan to remain in San Diego despite Stu’s commute.
“It’s really not that bad,” he said. “It takes me 1:45 to get to the Staples Center from my house.
“I have nothing to complain about. I have a great job, I work for a great organization and I work with the best play-by-play announcer in the business, a true legend.”

Game 3 of the Laker-San Antonio series airs tonight on Channel 9 with Hearn and Lantz and TNT with Marv Albert, Mike Fratello and Jeff Van Gundy. Game 4 on Sunday will be broadcast on NBC and Game 5 at the Staples Center on Tuesday night on Fox Sports Net but blacked out on TNT.
Fox Sports Net has completed two Laker playoff games so far and ratings are up 32% year over year. TNT/TBS ratings for the NBA playoffs are up 10%.
Albert and Fratello, who were injured early in the morning of April 18 when the limousine they were riding in crashed into a stuck Dunkin’ Donuts truck on a turnpike in New Jersey, were first together again Tuesday night when they worked on Game 2 of the Laker-San Antonio series for TNT.
They spoke about the accident before the game.
Albert, who suffered a broken ankle and other injuries, was knocked unconscious. Fratello said he remembers being woken up by what sounded like a bomb.
“The stalled Dunkin’ Donuts truck was right there in lane #2 with the lights off,” he said. “We didn’t stand a chance”
Fratello, who was walking on broken glass in his stockings, pulled Albert out of the car. The limousine driver suffered serious injuries, including a broken hip.
Sports reporter Randy Kerdoon, who started out as a stand-in on Channel 11 while still at radio station KFWB (980) nine years ago and has worked full-time on Channel 11 for the past seven years, will leave the station at the end of the month. His contract will not be renewed.
The same is happening with Todd Donoho at Fox Sports Net, who will be out this summer… Lisa Guerrero was supposed to replace Kerdoon but she’s locked up at Fox Sports Net. According to a source, possible replacements for Kerdoon include Tanya Memme, Lisa Dergan or Jennifer Gould.
