Suzen Johnson

Suzen Johnson (born February 1951) is a former flight attendant, businesswoman and model. In 1997, she was hired by The Globe to seduce ex-football player and sportscaster Frank Gifford[1][2] for a hit on The Globe. Gifford’s wife, Kathie Lee Gifford, was the popular co-host at the time of Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee.

Life and career[edit]

Johnson was born in Washington, D.C. born and later moved to Florida. She married athlete and businessman Harold E. Johnson (born 1930), who made money in the 1950s by turning gymnasiums into fitness centers by adding services and amenities. In 1989, the couple opened two unsuccessful Fabulous New Woman Health Spas in New Bedford and Fall River, Massachusetts.[4]

She worked for TWA for many years as a flight attendant. She was scheduled to work on TWA Flight 800, which crashed in 1996, but had switched shifts the day before.[5]

Johnson currently works as a real estate agent in Palm Beach, Florida.[6]

Affair with Gifford[ edit ]

In 1997, Johnson was hired by The Globe to lure Frank Gifford into the Regency Hotel in Manhattan, to a certain room where The Globe had secretly installed hidden recording equipment.[7] After two unsuccessful attempts, she finally got Gifford to go to the secretly bugged room on April 30th and May 1st. The Globe chronicled the tryst and published their story in May. The Globe paid Johnson between $75,000 and $125,000.[10][11]

National Enquirer editor Steve Koz observed, “It’s one thing to catch a celebrity cheating and another to entice or trap them. Without the Globe there would be no story here. I’m in the tabloids, and that’s a complete exaggeration.” It’s downright cruel.”[12]

Aftermath[edit]

In November 1997, several months after the Gifford scandal, Johnson appeared on the cover of Playboy and also appeared nude in that issue.[13]

The efforts the Globe made to get the story became a news publication of its own.[14][15] In January 1999, the National Enquirer ran a story about the Globe paying Johnson to tell the story about the affair,[16] and in June 1999 she sued the editor of The Globe, claiming she had been told the newspaper only wanted to know about it write of their platonic relationship, and the newspaper had wired her hotel room without telling her.[17] Johnson said she signed an agreement with the tabloid in March 1997 in which Globe officials offered $25,000 for the Gifford story and another $25,000 for a photo of them together.

In 2001, she ran a website called SuzenJohnson.com: Frank Gifford’s Mistress Tells All with her Playboy cover picture. On the website, she wrote about her faith and struggles with the tabloids, had a picture gallery, and intended to have fitness information, a members’ area, and a shop.[18] The site was closed in 2002.

Early life

Frank Gifford was born Francis Newton Gifford on August 16, 1930 in Santa Monica, California. He grew up with mother Lola, father Weldon (an oil driller), sisters Frances and Winona, and brother Waine. Frank attended Kern County Union High School (now known as Bakersfield High School) and after graduating enrolled at Bakersfield Junior College. After Gifford’s death, his widow, Kathie Lee Gifford, revealed that Frank grew up in poverty and his family sometimes had to resort to dog food. She also said that Gifford’s father struggled to find work during the Depression, so the family moved nearly 30 times before Frank attended high school.

college career

Although Gifford wanted to go to the University of Southern California (USC), his grade point average wasn’t good enough for a scholarship, so he played football at Bakersfield Junior College for a season. At Bakersfield, he was named to the junior college All-America team, and his grades were high enough to get him to USC. While playing at USC, Frank rushed for 841 yards for 195 carries in his senior year and was named an All-American in 1951. As a USC student, he joined the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and graduated in 1952.

NFL career

Beginning in 1952, Gifford played both defense and offense for the New York Giants. In 1956, he won the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award and helped the team defeat the Chicago Bears to win the NFL title. In 1960, Frank was KO’d by Philadelphia Eagles Chuck Bednarik during a game, resulting in a serious head injury. He retired the following year but returned to the team in 1962, this time serving as a flanker instead of a running back. Gifford spent 12 seasons with the Giants, playing in 136 regular-season games. He played in the Pro Bowl every year from 1953 to 1959, then again in 1963, and was a first-team All-Pro selection in 1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959. Frank finally retired in 1964 and his #16 jersey was retired by the Giants in 2000.

broadcasting career

After retiring from football, Gifford became a broadcaster covering football, basketball and golf for CBS. ABC wanted to hire Frank for “Monday Night Football” when it debuted in 1970, but with his CBS contract still running for a year, the network hired his friend Don Meredith after Gifford recommended him. Frank became the play-by-play announcer for “Monday Night Football” in 1971 and stayed on the show until 1997. In 1986, Frank took on the role of color commentator and Al Michaels became the play-by-play announcer. Gifford has color commentary alongside O.J. Simpson and Lynn Swann in 1986, then he was joined by Dan Dierdorf for the remainder of his time on the show. After Frank’s affair/scandal in 1997, Boomer Esiason replaced him on the broadcast booth, and in 1998 he was involved with ABC’s pregame show Monday Night Football, which only ran for one season. Gifford also hosted NFL coverage on Channel 4 in England in 1986 and was a commentator and reporter for ABC’s golf, skiing and Olympics coverage. In the ’70s, he announced Evel Knievel’s leaps on the ABC series Wide World of Sports and occasionally guest-hosted Good Morning America, where he met Kathie Lee.

Personal life

Frank married Maxine Avis Ewart, his college sweetheart, on January 13, 1952, and they had three children, Jeff, Kyle, and Victoria, before divorcing in 1976. Victoria married Robert F. Kennedy’s son, Michael LeMoyne Kennedy, in 1981 and they were separated at the time of his death in 1997 over allegations that he was having an affair with the family’s teenage babysitter. Frank married fitness instructor Astrid Lindley on March 11, 1978, and after they divorced in 1986, he married Kathie Lee Johnson (née Epstein) on October 18 of that year. They welcomed son Cody on March 22, 1990, and daughter Cassidy on August 2, 1993. In 1997, the tabloid Globe paid former flight attendant Suzen Johnson to lure Gifford to a hotel room equipped with hidden shooting equipment so she could take photos could make of Johnson who seduced him. After the tabloid published the photos, National Enquirer editor Steve Coz explained, “There’s a difference between reporting news and making news. ‘ there would be no story here. I’m in the tabloid and that’s way over the top. It’s downright cruel.” The Globe reportedly paid Johnson between $75,000 and $125,000. According to Johnny Carson’s former attorney Henry Bushkin, Carson’s second wife Joanne had an affair with Gifford in the early ’70s.

Death

On August 9, 2015, at the age of 84, Frank died of natural causes at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut. A few months later, his family revealed that Gifford suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative disease that can only be diagnosed after death. They explained: “Following the loss of our beloved husband and father, Frank Gifford, we made the difficult decision as a family to have his brain examined in hopes of contributing to the advancement of medical research into the link between football and traumatic brain injury… We.” miss him every day, now more than ever, but take comfort in knowing that by disclosing his condition we can contribute positively to the ongoing conversation that needs to be had; that he could be an inspiration to others suffering from this disease that needs to be addressed in the present; and that we could be a small part of the solution to an urgent problem that affects everyone involved in football, at every level.”

estate

In his will, Frank’s liquid assets were estimated at $10 million. He left Jeffery and Victoria $500,000 each and $1 million in a trust for Kyle, who was badly injured in a car accident in 1979 and lived with Frank and Kathie Lee in their $22 million Connecticut home. Gifford left this house and a residence in Key Largo to Kathie Lee. He also left $300,000 to Cody and Cassidy’s former nanny, Christine Maria Gardner. Although both children were already grown when the will was written, it stipulates that Gardner will become their guardian when Kathie Lee dies. The remaining $7.7 million went to Kathie Lee, the estate’s executor.

Awards and Honors

Gifford received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sports Emmys in 1997, winning the award for Outstanding Presenter or Commentator for the 1976-1977 season. He received two Primetime Emmy nominations for NFL Monday Night Football, Outstanding Achievement in Sports Programming (1974), and Outstanding Sports Personality (1976). For his college football career, he was named an All-American in 1951 and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame (1975) and the University of Southern California Athletic Hall of Fame (1994). In 1999, the couple paid $5.8 million for a 6,600 square foot home in Nantucket.
