Kelsey Christine Plum (born August 24, 1994) is an American basketball player for the Las Vegas Aces of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She won a gold medal in women’s 3×3 basketball at the 2020 Summer Olympics.[1][2]
She completed her high school education at La Jolla Country Day School in La Jolla, a municipality that is part of San Diego, California. Plum attended and played college basketball for the University of Washington. On February 25, 2017, on senior night, Plum scored a career-high 57 points — making 19 of the 28 shots she made — and broke the all-time scoring record in NCAA Division I women’s basketball with 3,397 points. On March 20, 2017, Plum broke the NCAA record for points in a single season with 1,080 points. She was selected by the San Antonio Stars with the first overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft.

Plum is the daughter of Katie and Jim Plum.[4] Her mother was an accomplished volleyball player for the University of California, Davis. Her father earned All-American honors by playing high school football in La Mesa, California, and went on to play college football and baseball in San Diego State. Plum has two older sisters and a younger brother. Her sisters both followed in their mother’s footsteps and played volleyball. Her oldest sister Kaitlyn played for UC Davis while Lauren played volleyball for the University of Oregon and for the USA junior national team. Her younger brother Daniel played soccer at UC Davis. Throughout her high school career, Plum averaged 2,247 points for an average of 19.9 points per game. She recorded 677 rebounds, assisted 381 baskets and had 370 steals. In her four years, her team had a record of 103–22, resulting in four section titles and the 2012 CIF Division IV State Championship.
Plum was selected to the 2013 WBCA High School Coaches All-America team. She competed in the 2013 WBCA High School All-America game, hitting six of her eight field goal attempts and scoring 14 points.
When it came time for college elections, Plum considered Maryland and Virginia on the east coast and Cal, Gonzaga, Oregon and Washington on the west coast, then decided to accept Washington’s offer.

Plum was named to the US basketball under-19 team coached by University of Miami head coach Katie Meier. Among Plum’s teammates were Moriah Jefferson and Breanna Stewart. Plum attended the tenth FIBA U19 World Championship in Klaipeda and Panevežys, Lithuania in July 2013 on behalf of the USA. The team won all nine games by an average of 43 points per game. 2015 Pan American Team[ edit ]
Plum was injured in December but was allowed to continue playing through the season. After the season, she underwent surgery on April 6. Her original game release dates extended past the Pan Am team trial date, but her rehabilitation went well and she was cleared to return to the court two days before the Pan Am team trials. [18] She was named a member of the 12-man squad representing the United States to play basketball at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, to be held July 16-25 at the Ryerson Athletic Center.[19]
Plum was a member of the United States Pan American Women’s Team that competed in basketball at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from July 10-26, 2015. The USA opened the group stage match with a game against Brazil. Though they extended a 16-point lead in the second quarter, Brazil came back and fell back on a 14-0 run to take a two-point lead in the third quarter. The USA responded with an 11-2 run with fouls from Jefferson and a three-point goal from Stewart. The USA eventually won the tight game 75-69.[20]
The second game was against the Dominican Republic. USA scored the first eight points and was never threatened. USA won 94-55. Plum led the team with five assists.[21] The USA played the last group game against Puerto Rico. The USA led by just three points at the end of the third quarter, largely due to the play of Carla Cortijo, who scored 24 points but retired injured late in the game. After the injury, the USA extended their lead to 18 points and finished with a 93-77 win, good for first place in their group.[22]
In the semifinals, Cuba led the United States by up to 14 points in the third quarter. The USA hit back and took a late lead. Cuba missed its final shot to give the US the 65-64 win and propel them into the gold medal game against Canada.

After helping the US basketball team win the gold medal in Lithuania, Plum flew straight to Seattle instead of going home to San Diego and then going to school. On the same day she left Lithuania, she worked out in the gym. By going straight to school, she was able to sign up for summer school classes and get to know the university and her teammates before the fall quarter began.[8] Her head coach Mike Neighbors noted her desire to hit the ground running, which helped his decision to name her team captain before the start of the season, a rare occurrence for a freshman. During her freshman year, she set six freshman records in Washington. Her total score (695) was the highest ever by a freshman, and her single-game high of 38 points is a freshman record. She was named Freshman of the Year for the Pac-12 conference. During the regular season, she averaged nearly 21 points per game.
One of the highlights of the year was a win over the country’s fourth-placed team, Stanford. Plum was the high scorer with 23 points.[28]

Washington opened its regular season with a game against Oklahoma. Washington lost the game 90-80, but Plum set a new school record with 45 points. In her sophomore year, she was included in the Wade Watch, a list of 25 players with the potential to win the Player of the Year honor. She was also included in the list of 30 players eligible for the Wooden Award.[30] Plum helped the Washington Huskies bid for the NCAA tournament. They met Miami by chance, coached by Katie Meier, who had been Plum’s coach when she was on the US basketball U19 team. Plum scored 17 points in the game but Miami prevailed 86-80.

For the week of January 11-17, Plum was named both Ann Meyers Drysdale International of the Week and Pac-12 Player of the Week. With 25.9 points per game, she ranked first in the Pac-12 and fourth in the nation. Plum also led the Huskies in an unlikely NCAA tournament run, highlighted by their first Final Four appearance in program history. Unfortunately, the magic run ended in the Final Four when Plum and the Huskies lost 80-59 to a deeper, more talented team from Syracuse Orange (who also snagged their first Final Four spot in program history). During Plum’s senior season, she became the all-time leading scorer for both sexes in Pac-12 history, surpassing the previous record held by Stanford’s Chiney Ogwumike in a December 11, 2016 win over Boise State. The following month, Plum became the first Pac-12 player and the 12th player in NCAA Division I to reach 3,000 career points during a win against Arizona. Plum was selected by the San Antonio Stars as the 2017 WNBA draft first pick.[36] This was the first time in history that the NBA’s (Markelle Fultz) and WNBA’s first overall picks came from the same school (University of Washington) in the same year.[37] Plum made her career debut on May 25, 2017 against the Dallas Wings, recording four points along with an assist off the bench in a 94-82 loss. On August 5, 2017, Plum scored a career-high 23 points in an 87–80 overtime win over the Seattle Storm. By the end of the season, Plum was averaging 8.5 ppg and was selected to the all-rookie team, but the Stars finished with the second-worst record in the league.
In 2018, the San Antonio Stars relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada and was renamed the Las Vegas Aces. During the 2018 season, Plum improved in every statistical category, averaging more points, rebounds, and assists with higher shot percentages. This helped the Aces improve overall from last season but fell short of a playoff spot as they finished ninth with a 14-20 record (6 wins better than last season).
In 2019, the Aces would finish the season fourth with a 21-13 record and make the playoffs for the first time since 2014. You would get a bye to the second round. In the playoffs, Plum went on offense and averaged double-digit ppg throughout the Aces’ playoff run. They would advance to the Finals but fell short, losing to the Seattle Storm in three games.
